I still fail to see why we need to leave it open. nothing constructive is happening, so this is just getting bumped randomly by people saying support.

Scratch wouldn't handle this, the OS would. If the controller is connected to Windows, Linux or whatever is running, scratch will see it no matter how it's connected.
