Scratch already has a sort of, ‘music editor’ although you can only create notes and have a limited amount of instruments and it must be in your code

My issue is that it may be hard to add a whole mini music editor and it would definitely crash a lot of projects. Vector and bitmap often lag out for me anyway.
Are you talking about the music extension? I already mentioned that in the original post.

In the first half, I'm saying many people probably would use it, so its a good idea in that sense
In the second half, I don't know how well Scratch could handle it

Yeah I was just bringing up a point you could use if anyone says that no one would use it lol

The music creator thing could work as a way to let people make their music (using the “music” extension) visually without having to mess around with syncing and stuff.

we aren't shaming you were are informing you about the shape in which the website exists and about how the existance of child friendly ness doesn't nullify professionality.

Support ifff you add more then just major and minor scales, like maybe mixolydiam, or octatonic

i meant, its unprofessional to base ur music editor off of a children's game, then just release the new version, that might make some older users pretty furious

Support, it could be an extension like “Advanced Music” for the sound editor.

I don't think I supported this suggestion, only stating that

This would be a great addition to the sound editor, and I would love the idea of a Mario Paint composer-based editor, so I support this!

MIDI just means “Musical Instrument Digital Interface”
In other words, a digital instrument.

Support, I made a similar suggestion already but I guess mine was less appealing or too complicated. yours is more appealing or less complicated, so it's getting more talk.

edward789121 wrote:

This is not about MIDI keyboard functionality, a suggestion for that exists but I can't find it.

The feature would be packed into 1 extension.

The extension would add these blocks:

play midi [ midi 1 v]
play midi [ midi 1 v] until done
play midi [ midi 1 v] on [0 - Drums v] until done
set midi [volume v] to ()
change midi [volume v] by ()
set midi instrument to ( v)
(midi volume)
set tempo to () bpm // shared with the music extension
change tempo by ()
(tempo)

Enabling the extension would also make available a MIDI editor (like you'd find in simple DAWs like Soundtrap, as pictured below) alongside the Codes, Costumes and Sounds menu.

The MIDI editor would be similar to the sound editor, with
  • a screen showing the notes
  • Select, Copy, Paste, Draw, Delete, Stretch, and Move tools
  • a Pause/Play button
  • a record button where you can use a midi device or the asdfghjkl keys
  • a tempo slider
  • and a Reverse effect.

You could also choose from a library, download, or upload MIDI.

Notes:
  • MIDI files take up hundreds of times less space than their audio file counterparts, which makes them work for a free service that relies on server storage like Scratch. (I am not suggesting getting rid of mp3 in scratch)
  • Some of the coding and assets for this extension could be repurposed from the Music extension.
  • This would give less experienced scratchers access to a wider variety of music for their projects without leaving the site.

You underestimate the difficulty of programming a music maker. ST has enough on their plate already

I'm sorry about that, I know how annoying it is when someone copies your suggestion. I tried to look for duplicates but I didn't see yours. Are you okay with us using this topic, or would you like this one to be closed?

Of course i'm okay with using this topic! Some titles just catch people easier and it's not anybody's fault, and I wouldn't call this a “dupe” since it's a different approach.

Plus, I like the idea, so I would rather have the way more people talking about it now than have an inactive topic for nothing other than feeling like I “won” lol.
