What’s NFE (Not For Everyone), How Is It Allowed And What’s The Difference Between NFE And Breaking The Rules?

I just learned about NFE (Not For Everyone). What’s the difference between NFE and rule breaks, and what are some examples of NFE that doesn’t break the rules? Also, how is it allowed?

NFE is not allowed in any circumstances. There isn't a difference between that and rule breaks, as NFE projects break the rules.

EDIT: Apparently GIF thumbnails are considered NFE too, and they don't exactly break the rules.

However, any project that has a GIF thumbnail is an NFE project, even though having a GIF thumbnail does not break the rules. The difference between a project that breaks the rules and an NFE project is that the NFE project might not break the rules, but isn't for everyone (such as projects with GIF thumbnails).

if NFE wasn't allowed, then ST wouldn't have added it
things that break the rules arent allowed - NFE almost breaks the rules, but isn't bad enough to be taken down

NFE projects are projects that may be triggering/bothersome to a small minority of Scratch users (hence the name Not For Everyone), but are not inappropriate and do not break the Community Guidelines.

They don’t appear on the Front Page, the Explore page, or the Search results.

This isn't entirely true—if a project were to break the rules, the Scratch Team would simply remove it outright.

A project may be marked NFE if:
  • it contains content that could be disturbing to some users
  • its subject matter is associated with possibly disturbing content, regardless of the project's actual contents (i.e. FNAF)
  • it could hinder the performance of the Scratch website even before it is clicked on (i.e. animated thumbnails)

What are some examples?

Some NFE projects may be inappropriate in minor ways. Examples include projects which are too violent for the front page, but perhaps not violent enough to be taken down.

I meant “inappropriate” as in “not allowed on the Scratch website”, but I guess it doesn't make sense to say that anyways since if a project wasn't allowed on Scratch, it obviously would be taken down, not NFE'd.

It's so that projects with animated thumbnails don't lag the page for users on poor devices (which is the majority of Scratch users- Chromebooks are designed to be cheap, not work well, and old school iPads aren't the fastest either)

Examples of NFE are games that contain realistic weapons, realistic depictions of war, stuff like that.
Also projects that get popular, but are exclusively coded to only run on turbowarp and not on the Scratch website have in the past been marked NFE.

What’s NFE (Not For Everyone), How Is It Allowed And What’s The Difference Between NFE And Breaking The Rules?

The difference:

NFE Projects:

* are not taken down
* can't be front paged, can't be on trending, and can't pop up in search results
* only offensive to a small minority of Scratch, and is not deemed entirely inappropriate.

Projects That Break CG:

* are taken down
* break the Community Guidelines
* offensive to a majority of scratch

In order to prevent naming and shaming, I'll just list descriptions of projects.

* one project that had you throwing bricks at pedestrians, uses ink instead of blood, NFE
* animated GIF thumbnails are NFE
* there's a lot more, i just can't remember them

If a project is front-paged, it's not NFE

they have the tendency to lag the webpage when rendered. it gets worse if there are multiple .gifs at once; here’s a good example of this. (thank you za-chary)

next time as well, please do make a new topic if you have a question about scratch instead of bringing up an older, already resolved post
