How?? The only thing that this suggestion would do is display the text spoken by the TTS extension below the project.

Yes, but so can text to speech in general.

You could easily do that with many other things, there are engines which let you use the clone function with letters to make text. I have seen f-bombs in some project using these, and looking in the code they write it out completely without any tricks to bypass the filters. Plus, it'd actually be easier for Scratch to moderate it as people wouldn't use clones which would have made things easier to bypass.

There can be a problem with this block:
speak [No subtitles! Haha!] transcript []::pen tts//empty transcript

speak [Don't read the subtitles, they are useless.] transcript [BLAH BLAH BLAH]::pen tts

Right, if the user wants to make the project less accessible, they can always do that. But with the amount of TTS manipulation going on, I do still think that it makes sense to have this block.

Well in that case it'd just automatically turn the text spoken into subtitles if the transcript is blank

Why not just remove the transcript input altogether? Just turn the speech input directly into the subtitle, which prevents that kind of thing.

Would users be forced to add subtitles? What if they don’t want to do extra work? What about for projects with audio-recorded sound? You can’t use TTS to figure out the words

The OP wrote:

As pointed out by #100, some people use different languages to get more voices and adjust the text to fit the language. However, this isn't very helpful in subtitles, for example “Helo, hau a iu duing?”, “Хэлоу, хау а иу дуин?” or even “해로, 하 ㅏᆯ ㅠ 두ᅱᆼ” for “Hello, how are you doing?”. Therefore, a new block would ideally be added:

The subtitles would be added automatically, so the project author doesn't have to do any extra work.

It wouldn't work for that. Captions for audio is a different suggestion.

Accessibility is important. It would be great if they did, but they can't be forced, of course.

Yeah, I think the idea of this would be that if people wanted to make their projects accessable, it'd be way easier to add high-quality subtitles this way. I mean, I never added subtitles on my projects, (other than my recent one) simply because I couldn't be bothered to put in some work to either find a good subtitle engine or make it myself. I only added the subtitles on my recent project because of accessibility, but I still hated adding them. With just a simple block, I for one would be more inclined to add them because of how easy it is. It doesn't mean everyone will make their projects accessable, that's fine. It's simply so you have more of an option to add them.

support but make it so you can toggle it on and off

back in covid i made a project that'll read out spelling words since we couldn't do tests during covid, and i have some projects unshared that read spellings to practice for irish class and having the words on the screen would ruin projects like that

other than that though i completley support, I'm not deaf but i have APD(auditory processing disorder, basically it takes me a couple of seconds to realise what a sound means) so subtitles are really helpful to me

Scratch can also auto translate instead of transcript blocks.

Good idea.
I guess the other one can't be fixed anyway. v

They (the Scratch Team) are going to consider adding filters to anything in projects, like tts.
I'm pretty sure they will considering that people use tts to bypass the filter on the main website.

Can we add a block that just adds a caption?
