Did you read the title of the suggestion? It says make a post for autism acceptance…..

cheddargirl wrote:

A quick search shows that it's being expanded to be inclusive of all forms of neurodiversity (though this seems to be only as recent as perhaps last year: https://humanresources.wp.txstate.edu/2023/04/03/your-guide-to-neurodiversity-celebration-month-how-can-you-be-an-ally/)

This changes the scope of this suggestion quite significantly; so draft posts or projects/studios may need to be redone in light of this fact.
I feel like changing the OP will be much more of a difficult change due to the enormity of neurodivergence. Neurodivergence is a very broad idea. Autism is too but with a lesser extent

The term “Autism awareness month” is considered, among the autistic community, to be a bad way of naming the month. This is because these terms are presented by a company called Autism Speaks, which claims to advocate for those of us on the spectrum when they, in fact, use very unethical methods of doing things and have done nothing but spread misinformation and confusion about autism. Unfortunately, this company is very prevalent in how autism is seen and has a tendency to put a negative view on us. With this in mind, I would like to request that it is at least known the preferred term to use in support of autism during April is "autism acceptance month" and that Autism Speaks is a very bad company. I don't want to go into detail about the things they've done here, but feel free to do your own research.

Being neurodivergent means their brain works differently and have different strengths and challenges than people whose brain works normally (stolen from google). People with autism, adhd, etc, are neurodivergent

Being neurotypical means your brain works normally

I did. I thought my mentioning of confusion among other posts would allow anyone reading mine to understand I was talking about said posts rather than the title. It's a very common occurrence, so I didn't feel the need to quote anything.

I am mentioning other posts, and I've already explained things above. If I had issues with the title, I would have said as such.

I did not even see that yet (I thought I was on the last page for some reason), and I had other things that I asked. Also, I was confused when you said proven by a few posts and did not quote specific ones, so I assumed you were referring to the original post (so I thought you when you were saying proven, that you meant towards the title so I thought you read it wrong or sth)
Also, I am not that mad when that happens.

Oh my goodness gracious
We need a post for every country, religion, disabilities, fandoms, genders, orientations, etc. because they might face harassment!!!11!!1!!

I’m not autistic (i don’t know i haven’t and will probably never get a diagnosis) so this may be based a bit ☠️
If they receive harassment, the report button exists, and the community will beat up that guy. Trust me
And doesn’t it fall under a line in the CGs like upper posts mentioned?
But many autistic people do face harrasement. And according to cheddargirl's post, groups that face harrasement deserve a forum post.
I am a Chinese person (racially/ ethnically, but I am from Malaysia) who faced multiple instances of racism or borderline racism on Scratch.
Where is my forum post then.

not here because the scratch team may have not seen all of the harassment, or they just don't think a forum post is a good solution. people who read announcements are mature enough (usually) to not be racist

scratchers on the forums from 10-500 posts have at most, a 7 short sentence span for replies. if you cant keep your posts in this range, then dont act suprised when someone asks for simplified version

Funny enough, most of the time the racism I've experienced are from those fandom obsessed, SJW-ish (I am a leftist but just sayin) users who would always advocate for LGBTQIA+. So I am pretty sure those users would read Scratch's announcements. Especially for those regarding BHM and Pride Month, yet they still act racist.

TL;DR: Announcements aren't really effective.

For me (an atheist), the people who offend me are the people who say that you can't say Merry Christmas, BC, etc, not the people who say Merry Christmas and stuff like that. Also, I look younger than I actually am (I mean as in height and weight and appearance [I have the height and weight of someone around 10-11 even though I have been on the internet for 15 years]) but same thing for stuff like “the m word” (that's actually a thing, and if you do not know, if you search m word little people you will understand). Though I'm “neurotypical” (well, according to what people have said here).
Though I do worry about my appearance because of how I look, I mean the fact that people might think I'm super young or something in certain cases. Imagine getting into a programming job, and then at a computer, you see someone who looks like a girl that hasn't even started high school LOL
Edit: also I have been trying to fix my weight and height, so yea.

I don't think so, it's probably gonna get spammed with “yes autistic people should get accepted” and “oh i'm autistic too” and Scratch Team will close it within 2 days, learning from the other stickies.

With the autism community, definitely, but the topic can just be closed, it's not like people will be talking about it for months or anything. They read it, they learn from it, and move on in life.

I kind of get @hydrofungus's point, but I do think it can be expressed in a nicer way. For countries, I don't think anyone's gonna harrass them, for religions, definitely not, for disabilities, maybe? For fandoms, probably not, for genders, I'm pretty sure Scratch Team supports LGBTQ, and I have no clue what an orientation is.

I have been on Scratch long enough that unfortunately, I can trust you…but the best way to prevent an issue isn't to report the issue when it is ongoing, it is to prevent the issue before it even started.

“Neurodiversity” may be a confusing word for 7 year olds. I think there could be a simpler word without calling out persons with a specific condition. Or maybe the forum post should be made specifically calling out people of different conditions and telling people to be nice to them?
Note from myself, I looked through this before posting and I did not mean for it to sound like a Hey, Bully but for people with specific conditions.

With that being said, support, as long as:
-It's not just autistic people that have a forum post for acceptance (to a certain extent, not like @hydrofungus's example)
-It is called “Autism Awareness, not ”Autism Acceptance" (read this post)
-Scratch Team monitors the topic and is ready to close it when things get heated

For countries, it’s kind of racism, and take a look at @Aidanthedumm’s post for an example of how being a person from/has a bloodline of a country can be harassed
Religions: a christian or a muslim could be harassed, like autistic people would
Fandoms, i’ve been harassed for being in the Genshin/Honkai fandom before, it was not a refreshing experience.
Genders, yes, st supports all genders, but does that stop people from harassing trans people and more?
And then, orientation is sexuality, and yes, a gay person can be harassed.

(I hardly know anything about autism so please correct me if I make a mistake.)

My opinion is that, if somebody really is enough of a troll to harass people because their mind works differently, (and these trolls exist, sadly,) then there is more wrong with them that a simple forum post would fix.

Last edited by Elijah999999 (April 8, 2024 14:07:53)

No longer using the forums unless necessary.

Really, stop with the “support/no support” thing. I don't care if you give a reason. If you have a reason you don't need to add this to your post in the first place. Stop acting like your opinion makes a difference. It doesn't. Opinions were never the point. The point is whether or not it's a good suggestion. If you can give a good reason at why this is a good idea or point out a flaw, do it, but don't take sides.
This is not sarcasm.
