When is the next Scratch update coming?

Hello everyone,
I've noticed that Scratch is rarely being updated, and so, I have a question. When is the next update coming? And is it ever gonna happen?
This question is probably hard to answer, I hope someone does reply though.
We really need a new update. The Scratch Community is pushing Scratch to it's limits and we NEED more. There are people out there so skilled at Scratch, that they don't have anything else to do here. They've reached the Scratch limit. Of course, there are lots of mods and addons to use, but we need updates here, in the real Scratch! Things we need in the next big update:
- Dark mode. Please. Everyone needs this.
- The ability to drag a single block out of the middle of the code.
- Better chat filters.
- Previous costume/background blocks
- Much, MUCH MORE!

Thank you, Scratch Team, for making this amazing platform. I hope you notice this.

Thanks for reading <3

we don’t know
3.0 isn’t even done yet
3.0 was rushed and released before the devs estimated it because flash was on its deathbed
so it’s doubtful they’ll make any soon.

That's not a bad thing. There will always be new people on Scratch who are trying to learn how to code. When someone is so skilled at coding that they feel Scratch is too basic for them, there are plenty of other programming languages out there that they can challenge themselves with. The benefit of Scratch is precisely that it's basic, so that new programmers can learn easier.

Probably in a few months or even years, Scratch doesn't have enough time and resources to make a major change while keeping the website up. They might still be working on a update now..

If I remember correctly, Scratch Team is already working on dark mode but hasn't release it yet.

The ability to drag a single block out of the middle of the code.
It's been suggested before but Scratch Team might still be discussing about whether it should be added or not.

Better chat filters.
The filters are already good enough to stop inappropriate comments, plus it's really hard to create good filters with the current resources that the team have.

Previous costume/background blocks
Previous background already exists, and previous costume is suggested but still not added.

1. People cannot make lists of unrelated suggestions. Instead, they have to create separate topics for each suggestion.
2. Previous backdrop already exists in the switch backdrop to () blocks:

3. Previous costume also technically exists (its functionality), but the option is not selectable without creating a costume called “previous costume”, and there is already a suggestion to add it to the dropdown:

4. Dark mode is already suggested:

When is the next Scratch update coming?

The Scratch Foundation posted something interesting a couple of months ago ( https://www.scratchfoundation.org/scratch-lego-2024-grant )

It was an announcement about a 7.8 million dollar grant and one of the areas of support was

developing new, innovative, and evidence-based features; improving the user onboarding experience; and continuing to be a leader in the creative learning movement.

I don’t know what that means but it sounds like they don’t want to just stand still with the Scratch product.

Assuming you are talking about 4.0, Scratch has no plans for that. Rumor has it that Scratch is remaking the dark mode last seen in 1.4.

Keep in mind that Scratch 3.0 is still in progress.

Correction: “Turing complete” means that any computation that can be done on a Turing machine can be done in Scratch. However, it does not mean that Scratch has no limits. For example, it's impossible to make a project run at 60 FPS without using external tools like Turbowarp. For another example, this project and this one are Turing complete, but there are things you can't do with them, like make a game where the player can see the screen.
