fairly simple levels, but each game in the series introduced a new control- such a one that killed enemies, jumping higher, etc. there keys for these special controls were Z,X,C … and continued along the last row of the keyboard
most levels had text on them, but the text was written letter by letter, and while it spelled out you couldn't move the character, which was pretty irritating

there was also a studio by the creator of the series made which had all of them in it

Wait… Is it this? It sounds a lot like what you described but it's been ages since I played it and I never played through the whole series, so I could be mistaken…
