For some reason, when you press S to go down, then press A to go left, it turns right to go to the left?

It's definitely something to do with the turning code that you have. I suggest writing new code yourself that's clearer and easier to understand.

Alternatively, RT_Borg has written code that makes a sprite turn smoothly to a certain direction here: https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/690745166/
You can adapt the code to turn towards the four directions (up, down, left, right) depending on which button is pressed.
