DC started a new Hellblazer book and I think it could be interesting to take inspiration from.

The Newcastle Mystery.

I was reading John's first appearances (In Swamp Thing) and noticed something. Newcastle is built up as this horrible event, mistake but the reader is never told what it is. The aftermath and guilt is there but never explicitly stated until Hellblazer #11(?) What if we do something similar?

Building up the ghosts and regret but never showing what happened, until John enters the dreaming then the past is seen.

We could do their break up, but my vote would actually be no flashback there. We just cut the flashback entirely and then in the dreaming show the Newcastle and Asylum flashbacks together

Swamp Thing #50. To stop the Brujeria there was a ritual involving magic folk who were contacted by John, long story short they took to long causing Zatara and Sargon to burst in flames. John didn’t really cause it but he was heavily adjacent to it. I think it could work as a replacement to get the point across the original flashback did and show Zee and John’s prior relationship. But again this is just an idea.

Probaly, there was a great two-part comic where a bunch of people try to make a Mucous Membrane/Newcastle documentary. It goes was well as you'd think.
