What is the purpose of temporarily blocking you from commenting for 5 mins if you comment something inappropriate???

It makes sense why they don’t allow you to send it but why do they block for 5 minutes? Like can’t the phrase just be blocked and then that’s it? Because if you’re not going to send it, why are you going to disable the ability to comment?

Just tell me why and I’ll finally be happy.

So you then don’t go around commenting other inappropriate comments for a period of time. It could also make you cool off and rethink why your comment broke the community guidelines and how you will comment more appropriately in the future.

In my experience, that doesn’t work.

But in st’s pov, it would help, even if that’s just a little bit. And it’s just 5 minutes, nothing to get worked over. Unless you caught yourself in an 1 hour mute or 2

Yeah, that's it. The inappropriate comments are sent to the Scratch Team, so if you get blocked from commenting for a certain time span, they have time to evaluate.

In addition, this also serves as a deterrent. If you know posting something bad might get you muted, you're less likely to do it again. The reason it's usually so short is the potential for false positives, and five minutes was chosen as a balance between long enough to get the point across to the user in the event it's a true positive, and short enough that it's not overly disruptive if it's a false positive. The likelihood of repeated false positives is also a lot lower than the likelihood of a single false positive, which is why the mute time increases with successive times triggering the filter.
