whats wrong with VPNs? What if I just, ya know, don't want to be doxxed easily??? it could be even mixture of these two
- let's say that there were problems with multiple accounts on one IP address (or you see VPN usage, open-network, …)
- then you would also start asking for phone number on that network
there is usually nothing wrong about using these - however they are quite often used to overcome ip bans
- and again this would affect just like small percentage of people and just those who want to activate an account
- and you would still have the opportunity to just use phone auth
In other words - it would affect just the people who both don't have phone number AND are on public network / vpn or network that was banned for any reason
maybe it would be even possible to add possibility to report profile for being obvious copy of another banned profile

Boy did you underestimate the amount of scratchers on public/vpn networks. Not to mention, how would you even detect public/vpn networks? Sure, theres a few online services, but none of them are perfect and can all be easily bypassed by using a proxy. How are you supposed to detect a proxy?whats wrong with VPNs? What if I just, ya know, don't want to be doxxed easily??? it could be even mixture of these two

For static, few consumers use statis IP's

Hey guys I have a suggestion,
If you point out any problem with anything - always make new suggestion how to solve that problem

______
The thing is it affects majority of children (not everybody knows how to overcome these)
detecting is usually possible using some databases on the internet which knows most of vpn ip's
- public networks won't be necessary to detect because they would probably be banned like normal IP's very soon
If you point out any problem with anything - always make new suggestion how to solve that problem

3. they can be easily bypassed anyways, all this does is make it annoying for VPN users

1. sad
2. definitely yes I would like to see 12 yo child to change its IP address or to even come up with the idea of going to some other wi-fi network to ACTIVATE THE ACCOUNT
3. every process has its flaws - you're overthinking this (thing is majority of the people don't know how to overcome them)
I still don't understand what ya all find annoying about activating account by both mobile phone and email since its action that is done just once (and even for subset of all people)
__________
btw. I now understand why you would be so angry about the change because this is also not your first account … (your oldest comment on your profile)

Scratches main demographic is around 8-16 years old so requiring a phone number would make verification more of a hassle. Hey guys,
I think you look wrong at it,
let's say there is a big problem with recidivism on scratch, how will you solve it?
ok there are some unintended side-effects of ip bans,
What about allowing only email servers that require phone number for authentication - which is harder to create for people?
or maybe smtg completely different …

3. Well, theres definitly more people using VPNs who'd rather not have to verify their account with phone numbers then there are people using VPNs who do not know other methods of bypassing IP bans and yet are breaking the rules
4. lol indeed

funny how pretty much all arguments against this suggestion also work as arguments for why we shouldn't have ip bans in the first place

IP bans are sometimes necessary, and because of their rarity do not often cause problems. funny how pretty much all arguments against this suggestion also work as arguments for why we shouldn't have ip bans in the first place

But schools may block them, so if the school's IP gets banned or muted, it'll have that effect to students using that IP. Plus, there's some students who don't have Wi-Fi at their home, so they may be unable to access their account. vpns exist.
