why CDs are better than streaming (essay)

I wrote this essay as an assignment for school. Enjoy and feel free to discuss it with me (I already submitted it so don't bother trying to save my grade). green is something I added since posting, red is something I have removed. I'll post the grade I got once it's graded.

For a long time now, people have been using streaming services such as Spotify or Apple Music to listen to music. Many people use such services to easily access music. However, I believe that CDs (compact discs) are a better option for listening to music.

CDs store uncompressed audio, while many streaming services use compressed file formats instead. This means that CDs lose much less detail, while the compression will save file space at the expense of audio quality. According to CD Unity, “the fundamental audio format used by CDs establishes uncompressed CD-quality sound; almost 29 times higher than streaming services such as Spotify, Apple Music or Tidal,” meaning that when listening to a CD, you will receive a much better listening experience.

Additionally, CDs contain liner notes, which are the booklets that come with the CD. While this may not initially be very exciting, the liner notes of a CD normally contain information that might not be included in a streaming service. For example, the liner notes contain the credits for the people who helped to record the music. While streaming services often contain music credits, they are usually not as in-depth as the credits in the liner notes, which can contain special thanks from the artist and other credits not included with streaming. All About Jazz writes, “The notes could provide a short biography of the artist, simply answering the question: Who is he or she? This makes the listening experience more personal. The musician is not just a name on the cover, but a human of flesh and blood. This is especially useful when the artist is not a familiar name.” This explains why the liner notes could also be better for understanding the artist you are listening to, allowing for you to better interpret the music.

One argument made for streaming services is that they’re more convenient. According to Calypsoroom, “The ability to access music streaming accounts from anywhere with an internet connection, be it on a phone, tablet, or computer, adds to the appeal.” Streaming music can often be faster than having to put a CD in your CD player, and it can be used widely across many devices. However, streaming requires an internet connection. The streaming service needs to load the audio file onto your device while streaming, which would require you to be connected to the internet. A CD, on the other hand, can be played with no internet connection and even no power if you have a battery-powered CD player.

Many people use streaming services now, but it’s now clear that CDs are much better options. They can be more robust in terms of quality and will offer more information about the artist. Now, you’ll go play a CD, right?

uhh keep in mind im just a 6th grader with an 8th grade literacy comprehention level

This is pretty neat! I'd like to make some comments, though.

1. Good paragraph to hook the reader

2. Though CD's do have better audio, the average enjoyer doesn't need the better audio quality. Additionally, Spotify claims they have an audio quality of 16 bits, and Cambridge Audio claims CD's are also normally 16 bits. Could you site your source on the “29 times better audio”?

3. I think you should've added what a liner note is, not just what's contained in it. I like this paragraph a lot, I don't have anything else to say

4. The only thing I can think of is that most people have access to internet/mobile data a majority of the time anyway now, making this a little irrelevant. Also, can't you listen to music offline with Spotify Premium? I don't think just having internet one time to download the songs is that much of a hassle.

5. I like the ending as well, but you forgot to mention the counter-argument. Also, the last sentence probably shouldn't of had “right?” at the end because it sounds like you're questioning if the reader will do it. Maybe “Now, will go you play a CD?” could of been better, or something exclamatory like “Now, go play a CD!” which sounds more encouraging. Remember, the end of an essay is one of the most important parts.

bruh this is more contrstuctive than any more I've ever made in the suggestions forums ☠️☠️☠️

I forgot to add the links. I'll do it tomorrow, too lazy rn. I added links to my sources, here's the link. It goes very in-depth about why CDs are higher quality.

I added a bit to the first sentence that explains it pretty well with few words. That's something I forgot to do (I edited the actual assignment)

I did consider that but I was like ah what the hell it won't be that much of a grade deduction

that was purposeful :P it was to draw the reader to thinking they are responsible for listening to a CD

Literally this. I have an ongoing CD collection too, and my parents are very impressed by it. My parents also have a vast collection of CDs themselves.

I can also prove this through personal experience, as I have compared my collection of CDs to their streaming counterparts and I can say firsthand that the CD audio quality is far superior.
