My summary of a little life by Hanya Yanagihara: TW: sh, sa, su1c1de, religious trauma, abusive relationships, and probably way more stuff

The story follows 4 friends: Jude, a disabled lawyer, Willem, a handsome actor, Malcolm, a former rich architect, and JB, an aspiring painter. The novel follows the four friends as their lives change under the influence of success and addiction.

The main character of our story is Jude, a lawyer suffering from a damaged spine, causing him great pain. In secret, Jude commits acts of sh, which becomes so severe that Willem has to force Jude to see the doctor. Jude, despite caring about his friends, refuses to tell them about what drove him to this point. Nonetheless, Jude continues his work as a lawyer, and forms a father-son relationship with his former college professor, Harold. Even though he now has a parental figure that cares about him, Jude sees himself unworthy of such privilege and continues to sh. Willem and JB decide to convince Jude to get help and stage a performance in which JB does a mocking imitation of Jude’s limp. Both Jude and Willem are unable to forgive JB for this, causing the friend group to fragment. Throughout this section of the story, we see flashbacks to Jude experiencing sa, showing why he has trouble forming and maintaining relationships.

As Jude grows older, his loved ones become increasingly concerned about his mental state, causing Jude to enter an abusive relationship with a fashion designer named Caleb, who constantly mocks him about his limp. After Jude decides to break it off, Caleb begins stalking him and eventually finds his way into Jude’s apartment, where Caleb brutally beats and SAs Jude, leaving him for dead. Jude refuses to report this incident to the police l, believing he deserved it. Suffering abuse from Caleb causes Jude to have PTSD flashbacks to his childhood, where he grew up in a monastery and was constantly put down and harmed by the people there. After running away with his friend Luke, the duo are caught by child services and sent to a foster home, where the caretakers aren’t much better than the nuns at the monastery. Remembering how horrible his life is, Jude finally decides to off himself, but the attempt fails. Willem begins living with Jude and helping him confront his trauma. The two eventually begin a relationship, though Jude has trouble opening up to Willem about how he isn’t comfortable “doing the deed”. In an attempt to stop cutting himself, Jude trying burning as another form of sh, but accidentally causes third degree burns, sending him to the hospital. Willem, to Jude’s dismay, finds out about the incident, and, after an intense fight, Jude tells Willem he isn’t comfortable with how their relationship is going.

After the incident, Willem and Jude enter a smooth point in their relationship, with Jude getting a prosthetic for his legs and Willem continuing to support him. Tragically, Willem and Malcolm are killed ima drunk driving accident, leaving Jude completely alone. Falling back into his old habits, Jude, despite getting the help he needs, allows for the decades of abuse and depression to catch up to him, and he takes his life.

who was: walt disney
this novel follows the story of walt disney, from his days dragging a mouse through his classroom to achieving worldwide fame. it including millions of interesting details, including his doctors' recommendations, his daughters and even his shenanigans in his elementary years! i found this book quite an amusing read, and i highly recommend that you check it out!

who is: dwayne “the rock” johnson
i originally stumbled upon this book while looking at “who was” books at the library, and i picked it up for a quick read. after i finished it, i was surprised at how much i had learned from reading a 40-page book. this short novel included fun facts about the rock's heritage, and his career as a wrestler. before reading this book, i had only really known that he'd existed from moana, but now, i feel like i've gotten a deeper understanding about his life. it's a great book, and i recommend that you take a look!

who was: kobe bryant
before reading this book, i had only really known the name kobe bryant from snippets of the news and the occasional murmuring of boys in my class. in fact, i didn't even know that much about him - only that he was a basketball player. after flipping the last page in this book, i've realized just how much of a basketball legend he is, and what an impact he's made on the basketball world. his dedication really inspires me! this book was quite an informative one, and i'm very glad that i read it

A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle:
Meg is the quirky daughter of daring scientists, her father more than her mother. A while ago, her father went on a science expedition, but soon later disappeared without any explanation. Her mother has an idea of what might have happened, but does not reveal much. Meg, her brother Charles Wallace, and a friend Calvin, set off on their own quest to find Father. They meet friends of Charles Wallace's: Mrs. Whatsit, Mrs. Who, and Mrs. Which, each a peculiar woman with unique powers. The six of them travel across space and time, wrinkling, tessering. Soon they come to a point where the women cannot travel further. They wish upon each child a gift for successful paths, and send them off. Meg, Charles Wallace, and Calvin land on a planet where everything is identical, and every happening happens at the same time. They learn that all this is being controlled by a disembodied brain called IT. IT is also holding Meg and Charles Wallace's father. With the women's gifts, they help Father out and escape the clutches of IT. But Charles Wallace is left behind. Meg summons up her courage and goes back to the planet with IT, and defeats it with something IT can never understand: love. The whole family (and Calvin!) return home to earth and live happily.
