Youtube Dumping Flash. It's Time for the ST to Work on HTML5 Again

Youtube has recently announced that they are dumping the Flash player and HTML5 will be the main player (heads up ST your Flash-embedded Youtube videos will no longer work on this site you'll have to use an iframe instead). Youtube is probably the #1 company (AKA Google) that still actively used Adobe, but now it seems Flash is even taking more of a downtoll.

I really think the ST should think twice about leaving the HTML5 player development up to the community. It's development does not seem to be making much progress to me. What would happen if Adobe quit making Flash? This could be bad for Scratch (even though old versions could be used). I just think a more modern platform should be used, even if that means reprogramming a ton of stuff. At least Scratch Team could you release a Beta and work on it for a while? I realize updates here are not so frequent anymore (not sure if you guys are focusing more on server-side stuff) but I think it's be wise to dedicate time to this.

This is a good idea. I think they should make scratch projects so that they can turn into C# files.

No that would be extremely time-consuming and difficult for them (or anyone) to make that I think.

This would be great… but do they really have the time to do so?

so how does youtube's decision to stream its videos through the HTML5 player have to do with Scratch projects???

  • Flash will soon be unsupported/obsolete by Adobe
  • Flash is a massive security risk

Yes. I was in the html5 beta on youtube for a while now, and it was great! The flash player is terrible compared to the html5 one for a number of reasons, most importantly it blocks out menus and stuff when I have NPAPI flash enabled in chrome.

But anyways, flash is going to become obsolete as more sites start dropping it, and I think scratch should actually resume serious work on their html5 player before it's too late.

In the meantime, I might try hacking together an html5 editor using phosphorus, jszip, and scratchblocks2…

Support! Although, how will the ST have time to make this?

Definite support. Not only is flash in danger of becoming obsolete, but the current HTML5 player (phosphorus) is epic - it's waaaaay faster than the Scratch player in most cases. I think that if the Scratch Team made a player/editor using phosphorus as their base, that not only would it decrease risk of flash problems, but it would also possibly improve speed and reliability by a large amount. And not to mention those automatic benefits of an HTML5 player.

I've always loved my beautiful son Flash but I would not be opposed to a full conversion to HTML5!

Every project will work, you just need a way to read sb2 archives with HTML5?

It's a good idea, but what about those of us who won't be getting HTML 5 anytime soon? Then we won't be able to use Scratch.

Well without installing extras, going to other sites, and viewing archives, I mean just regularly…

HTML5 runs in your browser- it would even work in safari as well:
Here are the supported browsers.
