Scrolling blocks?

At one point, unless I'm mistaken, the ST said something about "scrolling blocks," to help with making games and animations and such.

So the question is: What exactly does that mean?

Does that move the origin(x:0, y:0) to its own coordinates, taking everything else with it?

Will it move the STAGE? And if it's going to move the stage, what about the pen layer? How does it fill the empty space outside of the backdrop?

Does this mean we can have the option to unlock the screen edges, as in a sprite can be x position > 239 or y postition > 179? (Or x position < -239 or y position < -179?) Maybe we'd have to unlock the screen edges to have access to these scrolling blocks?

Am I just being a total derp?

I'm a little interested, to say the least. After all, just having the option to unlock the screen borders would be a better alternative than actually making instant scrolling.

Unfortunately, this isn't unlocking the screen borders, nor most of the alternatives that you described above. If I remember correctly, then “scrolling” blocks" is scrolling the background/stage. I'm not sure what it would do to the pen layer, but I presume it would shift as well.

To add on, yes this feature was mentioned by the ST as a future feature at one time, though it got rejected in the Alpha stage of 2.0.

If you'd like to read up more on this, there's the Scratch Wiki.

Scrolling blocks?

I see. That answers my question. Good to know! Thanks!

As for the alternatives, they were just my speculation on what it might be. It also discusses technicalities. It was also just me guessing to see if I could find the answer myself, and have it confirmed.
