Skylar's Journal - A Leader App - SRC August 2023 (answers)

About Me-
Hi there! I’m Luna/Skylar (she/her pronouns) My timezone is PDT/PST, and I am so excited to be applying for leader this session!
I’m in middle school this year, in sixth grade (woo first ever age reveal hehe)
I absolutely love to read, write, draw, and play soccer! My favorite books are Kotlc, Hunger Games, WoF, The Unwanteds, and the Front Desk series.
I absolutely love listening to Cavetown, Alec Benjamin, Em Beihold, Conan Gray, Olivia Rodrigo, and many more artists (also not many Dove Cameron songs but like omg Boyfriend is so good??) I also love listening to Broadway music
My fandoms are KoTlC, Wof, Toh, TTS, Amphibia, and Vat7K! <33
I have four fish, they are danios I believe, and they’re the kind that glow under black light! I also have one cat, who really likes laying on my keyboard and trying to eat popcorn xD He’s a blue tortoiseshell-tabby mix!
Like I said before, I’m super excited to be applying this August, because SRC is such a fun camp I also participate in SWC, SAC, and CT!

Experience-
I have participated in src many times before, I believe this will be my fourth session <3 And every single time, I’ve enjoyed it so much!
My first session was August 2022 (one year ago!) and I was in Fan-fi Facility, lead by the one and only Radical Raya, and the amazing Celes <33 I was so nervous to be in SRC for the first time, I really didn’t know what to expect, since the only camp I’d ever been in was SWC, for a session, and even then, I was still a newbie. But I absolutely loved it! Thanks to Raya and Celes huge shoutout D I remember being like ‘well I know celes but I have no idea who this /raya/ person is’ and now I know her so well, it’s funny to look back on that <3
My second session was in Legend Lake, in December 2022! I was very excited for that session, because I knew both of my leaders already I had known Em from SAC, and I knew Finley because she’s an amazing friend, and she’s just so awesome and shines in every camp she’s in, so i’d seen her around <33 That was amazing too!
My most recent session was in April, when I co-lead for the first time, with Raya! Together we lead our cabin, Bizarro Boulevard, to victory! Huge shoutout to Raya /again/ for being the most amazing leader in the world, it was a blast working with you, and to all of our great campers <33
And hopefully, I’ll get to lead in this session <333
As for other leading experience, my school had PE leaders, and I was chosen to be one of those, and what we did there was we led warmups and dances
I've also tutored younger kids in kindergarten, first, and second grade before!

Traits-
I think I’d have lots of unique and beneficial traits to bring to the src community!
For one, I have experience with the other leaders and hosts, and I know how the camp runs, and most of the rules about Cabin Wars, which I remember was an issue last session.
Secondly, I am also good at collaborating with others, which could come in handy when working with a co in choosing important details about our cabin, such as the theme and storyline, and currency.
Another thing I could bring to our cabin and the whole community is that I am encouraging and supportive towards our campers, fellow leaders, and hosts! I will always support their goals and what they hope to achieve that session, and always help them strive and be their best selves.
I also try to encourage self-positivity, so they can try their best and know that even if they don’t meet their goal, or they can’t be as active as they thought, or something else like that, that the camper is still amazing and contributes so much to our cabin.
Even if we came in last, I would probably still throw an in-cabin party for us Because no matter what, you tried, and that’s what counts!
I am friendly and accepting to everyone, no matter their differences from me, and I feel like that’s very important in a diverse community such as SRC, or any other online community and camp!

Time-
I don’t have many commitments this July, other than on July 4th, I’ll probably not be able to get on in the afternoon or any time in the day, because we’re having a big party for the fourth of July.
Other than that, I’m participating in SWC this July, but I was also participating in SWC last March during the planning time for April, and it never affected my activity. Even if it were to, I would notice I'm getting kind of distant from the planning and either prioritize SWC less, or drop out entirely. I know how important the planning session is, because your storyline and cabin quality definitely affects how campers view you as a leader and motivates them more.
In August, I do have a commitment that could affect activity a little. I’m actually starting middle school this August ( school starts August 10) and with that change from elementary school, I might be a little busier.
I also am only allowed 20 minutes of time on Scratch every school day, but I practically have unlimited time on the weekends, other than chores and things like that.
Once I get used to middle school though, which should be relatively quickly, I can probably focus more on SRC.
One more thing is that on the 23, I'll be going on a ten day trip. I'll be able to access my account, but I'll rarely be active. After that, I'll be active though!

Why I want to lead-
I want to be leader because it’s a really fun experience, I love to read, and most of all, I absolutely love being a part of the amazing SRC community, and always have wanted to create a cabin and be a leader that the campers looked up to
It brings me so much joy to participate in SRC every August, April, and December, because it feels like everyone is so kind and friendly to each other, and it’s just super nice to know so many amazing people and bond over reading <33
I’d also want to encourage more people to read, because it really is a great activity! I pretty much want to get people to give reading another try if they think they don’t like it, because after all, if you don’t like reading you just haven’t found the right book <3
I also love spending time with all the leaders, co’s, and hosts, because you guys are funny, nice, and just all around amazing!

Why I stand out-
I think I stand out from the other applicants because I am positive, kind, friendly, and sweet! I’m sure all of the other applicants have these qualities, as well, but I definitely have them a lot more than some other people, if that makes sense.
I will go out of my way to be kind and supportive of people, and I would probably carry on being nice to someone if they were bullying me xD
I think this could really come in handy with campers who are new to SRC, because I am always patient with people and tend to explain things in a kind, gentle way. I understand some other people have more of a competitive spirit than I do, and could easily get frustrated with campers who don’t understand how SRC works quite yet!
I also feel like my positivity and warmness to people could help in my cabin, especially if someone has something irl that’s important, or they haven’t been doing many dailies, or even if they entirely forgot about SRC (I’m sorry May Tropiland :skull: /hj )
I know that sometimes campers get really down about not being able to be as active as they expected in a cabin, or even if it seems if everyone else is reading more than them, doing more dailies, etc.
This definitely has happened to me more than once participating in SWC, I typically had more IRL commitments than the other people in my cabin, and couldn’t really relate to staying up till 3 am doing cabin wars xD But my outstanding cabinmates were super okay with that, and were encouraging no matter how many words I write, or how many dailies I did.
I want to create that kind of experience for my campers, and help them know that no matter what they do, they’re always a big part of our cabin and everything they can do counts <33

What i'd do if a camper was adding lots of pages-
I would probably handle a camper adding a lot of pages by kindly asking them the titles of the books they’ve read. In that situation, the titles might be helpful, because if they were reading a book that’s too easy for their reading level, or even like only reading graphic novels, I could challenge them to read a harder book after they’ve met their goal quickly. For example, if a camper was adding a lot of pages, I’d ask something like “Hey, could you give me the titles of the books you’re reading from?” and if they said something like “Hooky, Owl Diaries, Catwad.” or any other easy to read books, I might keep letting them do that until they reach their goal, which should be quickly if they’re reading easy books.
Then, I’d tell them, “Wow, it seems like you reached your goal really quickly! I’d suggest reading books that are more of your reading level, such as…” and give them some recommendations. After that I’d ask the titles again, just to make sure they’re actually reading those books.
If they’ve given me reading level appropriate titles after that, and they’re still adding a suspicious amount, I’d ask them to summarize what happens in the pages.
I’d also explain that SRC runs on a code of honesty, and they need to be honest with their pages.
If the issue still persists, I might reach out to a host.

How i'd make my cabin enjoyable-
I’ll try to make my cabin enjoyable by incorporating a fun storyline that is engaging and fun for the campers. I’d want to create a welcoming and supportive cabin atmosphere for the campers, and I’d want it to be a place where they enjoy being and if it’s their first time participating, the kind of cabin that would make them want to participate again
I can also encourage them with little rewards such as pfps, or fun in cabin events I remember I never got to matching pfps last session, so I’m probably going to try to make them ahead of time, or even before the session starts!
I will also make it enjoyable by having fun in-cabin events, such as what me and Raya did last session in Bizarro Boulevard, where we did ‘block parties’ on the weekends! Pretty much what we did with that was we’d play fun games together and just hang out :00
I also had the idea of making a spotify playlist, because I have an account, and playlists are so fun to create!
They can also really give campers a good idea of the cabin’s theme, and what the storyline’s going to be like

Cabins-
I’d probably be interested in every cabin, to be honest, because I have so many ideas for all of them! I’ve always wanted to lead Mystery, that sounds really cool, and I have a lot of ideas for that I also have a lot of ideas for Dystopian, so that would be awesome as well!
I was also thinking last session, one of my ideas was Tall Tale Treehouse!
I feel like tall tales isn’t really a genre you’d see every day, but I really liked the idea <3
Another genre I was interested in adding to the lineup was Horror or Thriller, because making up and participating in those storylines can be so fun and engaging, and there’s really just a ton you can do with those genres!

Collaboration-
I think I'm good at collaboration and work well with others because I'm usually very open to everyone's ideas, because everyone has something important to say I'd be a very good listener when it comes to coming up with ideas for our cabin!
I can also collaborate well when it comes to figuring out things if one of us goes inactive, or has a commitment, I can be a procrastinator sometimes, but if something were to happen that affects my whole cabin, I wouldn't hesitate to collaborate with the hosts and reach out to them, and once we came up with a plan, I would stick to it.
I could also collaborate with my cabin when it comes to wars and things like that, because those are always super fun, unless you're the only one doing the war! I'd make sure this never happens by making sure I always help out my campers when they need it and always doing my very best to contribute to our cabin <3
