Microtonal / Xenharmonic Music and Composition

If you've made it here, welcome to the microtonal/xenharmonic music topic! (note for st: it's in timac cause i like making this stuff)
Discuss anything related to microtonal/xenharmonic music here.

Joe Monzo's definition of the word ‘xenharmonic’ is below.

Joe Monzo wrote:

A term coined by Ivor Darreg from the Greek words for “strange harmonic”. Darreg used it to refer to any non-12-edo (microtonal) scales, which presented strange and wonderful new intervals and sonic worlds to explore; he chose “xen” because its connotation in ancient Greek is that the stranger is to be welcomed as a guest, eventually to become more familiar, and ultimately to become a close friend.

Note that it is possible for a composition to be composed entirely of intervals that would ordinarily be considered ‘microtonal’ without sounding particularly unusual or ‘xenharmonic’; an example is Joe Monzo's 19-tone Samba; other examples would be Renaissance, Baroque and Classical music performed in historically correct temperaments.

This topic does not focus on world tunings, but world tunings can be discussed here.

if bandlab has vst support, you can download plugins that support microtuning

updated my little 24edo thing, although it's still a work in progress. i realized that the reason it was hurting my head was that i'd fully eq'd out a specific frequency and forgot (whoopsies). it might still hurt your head, however.
while i made this to mainly explore the new harmonic capabilities in 24edo, (i realized this a bit late but) 24edo has some really interesting melodic capabilities too (i am talking about the music box part past bar 26). well, i don't know what i was expecting since it's more notes than 17, 19, 22, etc. but it was a pleasant surprise. bar 31 reminds me of 5edo.

it ‘exists’ but it's really janky from what i've heard. you're gonna have to look more online for that, since i don't use notation software. this page may be useful, perhaps: https://en.xen.wiki/w/MuseScore

by the way… just putting this out there… sagittal is the best microtonal notation you only need to learn to read like 8 new symbols for evo spartan sagittal (which is even easier if you read the mythical introduction!!) and you can notate basically all you could ever really need!!!!

Is that a microtonal guitar right i presume that's what it is

I was thinking of trying out making microtunes, but I don't have a real DAW. Well I have LMMS but I feel like it's kind of clunky. Part of the reason why I'm making my own.

and of course a Box is an option, but those weren't designed with microtones in mind

I found a secret version of LMMS once with a microtuner and a physical modelling synth. I don't have the link to it now but it's somewhere

I think you can try asking Lost Robot (one of the lmms devs) for it on the purple app because they were the main person who was developing it I think

Hey, have you ever heard of 432 hz music? It's great…look it up. So much more relaxing than regular 440 hz tuning

I hate you so much

(For context… The 432Hz conspiracy is NOT real. It won't heal your dna. And it's not relaxing.)

it really is a big deal us microtonalists consider the 432Hz conspiracy as our mortal enemy because it is a very big misinformation puddle which:
  • portrays alternate tunings as just modifying where your A note is
  • creates panic, which is used by people to sell shammy and scammy products (similar to the guy who said vaccines cause autism)
  • overshadows what alternate tunings can really be and do
  • can create a stigma against alternate tunings for those who know that the conspiracy is fake
i have nothing against you but i have everything against the 432Hz conspiracy
