______________
What is an Operating System (OS)?

An operating system is system software that manages the computer's resources, both hardware (GPU, CPU, SSD/HDD, etc.) and software (cache, storage of files, etc.). At the core of the operating system is the kernel. The kernel manages everything in the system. Some examples of the kernel are the Linux kernel and the Berkeley Software Distribution kernel.

What is a DE?

A Desktop Environment (DE) is like a GUI for the OS. You can use it to browse the web, play games, create documents and slideshows, etc. A DE is not necessary to use the system, even though it is highly advised to use one if you are a casual desktop user.
_____________
What is a Window Manager?

A window manager is responsible for letting you see the apps that you open using a window. It manages the placement and appearance of the windows as well.
