BEWARE, THE FOLLOWING POST CONTAINS SPOILERS

Summaries of Wires and Nerve, Volumes 1 and 2, and Cinder's Adventure, all by Marissa Meyer

+300 points for Fantasy

Wires and Nerve Volume 1

This graphic novel takes place in the universe of the Lunar Chronicles, after the events of Winter. After the war between Earth and Luna ended, Cinder enlisted her android friend Iko to help hunt down rogue wolf soldiers that remained on Earth, and bring them back to Luna so they could be rehabilitated and once again join normal society. During her efforts, Iko comes across a plot among a certain group of soldiers to take revenge on the Lunar crown, and, with the help of Lunar guard Liam Kinney, embarks on a journey to stop them.

Meanwhile, Cinder prepares for the annual ball in New Beijing, and for her planned abdication of the Lunar throne following the establishment of a prime leader elected by the people. On Earth, Iko also confronts the fact that although she had a vital role in saving Earth and Luna from Queen Levana's tyranny, she nevertheless is seen as less important than her human companions. Iko struggles with her human-like feelings and emotions, raising the fundamental question of whether humanity is only present in living beings.

The book ends on a cliffhanger as the rogue soldiers attack a party honoring Thorne, during which Iko attempts to capture the soldiers, but they get away.

Wires and Nerve Volume 2

In the sequel to Wires and Nerve, Iko's efforts continue as the annual ball draws closer and Cinder returns to New Beijing. Confronted with the fact that there is no undoing the modifications made to the wolf soldiers, they change their goals from restitution to revenge. They enlist the help of Wolf, aka Ze'ev Kesley, raising questions of the hero's true loyalty.

In the election on Luna, one of the prime candidates is former princess (now ambassador) Winter Hale Blackburn, who is targeted by the wolf soldiers during a television conference on Earth. Winter, Jacin, and Tressa are kidnapped, and Alpha Steele, leader of the rogue soldiers, promises to release them only if Cinder gives herself up in exchange.

Iko, Cinder, and the other heroes come up with a plan to rescue them, and, by tricking the wolves with android copies, they manage to rescue the prisoners. Iko proves her humanity to Liam Kinney, and the ball and election proceed as planned, drawing the book to a close.

Cinder's Adventure

This choose-your-own-adventure story has readers choose a path for Cinder as she navigates dream-like challenges full of characters and events from other books by Marissa Meyer, all in an attempt to get to her wedding on time. Possible paths take Cinder into the land of Hearts, where Scarlet has curiously replaced the Queen of Hearts, Wolf has become her executioner, Iko is the White Rabbit, Winter is the Cheshire cat, and Jacin refuses to be a caterpillar. Alternatively, Cinder ventures into the lair of the Erlking and either escapes or is doomed to join his soldiers, or she falls through a portal into the post-war world of Renegades. The book requires careful planning and re-reading to reach all possible paths, and there are 10 different endings through 53 chapters.

I recommend drawing a plot map or using a spreadsheet ;)

Raya's summarizations:

Wonder by RJ Palacio |||
August (Auggie) Pullman is a ten-year-old homeschooler with a facial difference. He happily lives with his mom, dad, sister named Via, and their beloved dog, Daisy. Auggie most enjoys reading, playing, and especially Star Wars. But his life changes when he must go to a public school for his middle years. He meets many kids, a few loyal and friendly, but many who dislike Auggie. He makes his way through the hurdles of middle school. Making friends, losing them, being betrayed, caught in the middle, and developing a tolerance for bullies. Daisy passes away. Meanwhile, his sister is also going through struggles of her own - and in high school. Friend, no friend, boyfriend, her own friend, she wades across the river near away from the easy bridge she cannot cross. When the school year comes to a close, the triumphs for both siblings outweigh the losses. And they live as happily as they can be.

A Soft Place to Land by Janae Marks |||
A middle school girl named Joy Taylor endures a move from her roomy house into an apartment in the city. Moving means losing piano lessons because of her family's financial situation, so she tries to make money on her own. Joy makes friends and starts a dog-walking business with one of them. Soon learns about a secret kids-only place in the building: The Hideout. There she starts writing letters to a mysterious kid only to find that it's her the friend she spends the most time with. But one morning, she breaks the one rule of the Hideout: kids-only. Her parents find out about it when Joy sleeps in it for a whole night. There are repercussions, also for the other kids. For a while it seems like her friends won't talk to her forever. But Joy comes up with a new idea, a new hideout. It would work out for everyone, even the adults. Together with her family and friends (the ones she gained back) they work on the new hideout. Doing so, they make an even greater space to be around, and Joy gets all her friends back. Overall I didn't like the story hehe

Reading list!

Summaries…

Murder most unladylike

At a typical English country boarding school, Deapdean School for Girls, a mystery happens. This book follows Daisy and Hazel as the only two members of their detective club, solving a murder. At the start, all of the mistress and masters are suspects. Throughout the story we see names crossed off the suspect list, then put back on, and then crossed off again. It also gives an introduction to Daisy and Hazel especially as well as other members of the school and how life at boarding school runs. And then, right as they think they have caught the criminal Spoiler alert another mystery murder emerges.
I liked this book more than I thought I would. The only thing is, I had a suspicion on who the culprit was from the beginning, which turned out to be true!
+100 for Bizzaro

Morning Star by Pierce Brown, the third book in the Red Rising series. An excellent follow up to the second and a great end to the original trilogy.

Despite book 6 releasing later this year, I won't read book 4 onwards until book 7, titled Red God, releases next year so I can finish the book 4-7 story arc in one shot.
