March 2023 SWC Writing Megathread

Hello and welcome to the official SWC writing thread! This thread is for any SWCers to share writing so we don't all have to make our own writing threads. Additionally, the second post of this thread will be a sort of “masterpost” of rules and info about SWC for campers <3

Please read through the first post of this thread whether or not you have read it before - our rules are changed and edited every session as we work on improving SWC! Yes it's long, but all of this information is important for you to know, because we share the forums with the rest of Scratch! If you have any questions afterwards, please ask me or another host on our profiles - that way it's easier for you to get a response without clogging up this thread <3

What you can put here:
Any writing you do during SWC (whether daily, weekly, word war, writing competition entry or just your own writing) can go in this thread! You can either make a new post per piece of writing, or make one post and edit your new writing into it - either is fine!

Please try not to have conversations or chat here - you can post writing, give critique and discuss others' writing but if off topic conversations happen here, it's likely the topic will be deleted or closed by the Scratch Team. We'd like to avoid that. <3

Remember to check any writing you post to make sure it does not contain any personal details or private information. If it does, you can either edit out/change the details or not post the writing! Stay safe online ^^.

Ways to use this forum:
There are two main ways to use this forum - but other ways are okay too!

Making one post and editing your new writing into it. If you use this method, please edit new writing into the top of your post, so it's easier for leaders to find!

Making a new post for every writing piece (you could also include an optional “table of contents” post which contains a list of writing pieces and links to them!)

Reporting posts
Please don't hesitate to report other posts if you feel you need to! Valid reasons to report posts include:

- The post shares private information
- The post contains rude/offensive language
- The post makes you uncomfortable
- The post is spam or off topic
- The post does not belong in this topic
- The post otherwise breaks Scratch's guidelines or makes you uncomfortable

When you click report, you will be provided with a comment box to explain why you reported the post - and please do so! It helps the forum moderators understand what you want them to do.

On the Scratch forums, there are lots of reasons you can report things other than that they're inappropriate. Reporting is not trying to get the user in trouble, picking on the user, or going behind their back - it's simply helping to keep the forums organised, tidy and scratch safe. You won't get in trouble for reporting a post that doesn't need reporting, as there are no rules as to what does and doesn't need reporting. So it's fine to report posts that don't belong in this thread, are off topic, or are spam as well as inappropriate posts.

Discussing people's writing
It's completely okay to respond to and comment on people's writing here. However:

People won't necessarily see your responses to their writing, because they don't get a notification when you quote their writing. Instead, you can comment on their profile, either commenting on their writing there or saying something like “hey! I responded to your writing piece here: <link>”

It's also fine to give critique to others' writing here, but make sure to give the person the link to your critique!
Also, please keep in mind that not everyone here will want critique on their writing! Make sure to ask permission before giving anyone critique.

To get the link to a post, right click the top left corner of the post, where it says the date and time it was posted. Then click “copy link address”, and paste the link wherever you need it:

Personal writing threads
Personal writing threads will be allowed this session! However, please only make one forum topic for just your writing - put it in the "Things I'm Making and Creating" forum, and use that topic for the whole of this SWC session. This means not creating a new topic for, say, your writing competition entry, and certainly not creating a new topic for each writing piece, as this is a nightmare for forum moderators and other people using the forums.
It is still highly recommended that you use the megathread in order to be considerate to other forumers! Having a lot of different writing topics makes it harder to find other topics, so please consider carefully whether you'd be willing to use the megathread before creating a personal topic

Other Ways to Share Writing
Not everyone wants to share their writing in the forums, and that's fine - here are some other places it's okay to share your writing!

You could create a new scratch project (perhaps on an alternate account if you don't want to share writing on your main account!) and share your writing as an in-project comment, in the description and notes and credits, or pasted into a costume using the text tool.

You can take a photo or screenshot of your writing and either put it inside a scratch project or upload it to cubeupload, then share that link. You will need an account to use cubeupload, but it's a safe way to share images and the Scratch team allows it.

Please note that blankslate is not allowed. If you don't know what it is, it's a writing sharing program that we used to use frequently in SWC but is no longer allowed because of its lack of moderation.

Do not attempt to bypass Scratch's filter in order to share writing on sites that are not allowed. Not only are these sites banned for a reason, but you will get caught if you attempt to share links to them on Scratch. Proof shared via other sites will not count. Cubeupload is the exception to this rule, as it is allowed by Scratch in order to share images on the forums

Thanks everyone, and happy writing!

(Many thanks to Kat and Honey for writing the megathread post in previous sessions, which I have used as an outline.)

Camper Rules

If you believe any of these rules shouldn’t apply / should apply differently for a specific case (e.g. adding a daily when this guide says not to), take it to the hosts! We’re happy to deal with edge cases and/or disputes on an individual basis. Questions about these should be taken to your leader or a host's profile, not asked here

Rules with a ⚡️ next to them are new this session! Please pay extra close attention to them.

TLDR
  • Only literary words may be added - see the first section below for a full description of this!
  • Leaders may ask for proof of writing if they believe the amount you're adding is unrealistic.
  • You must give an explanation of what you were writing when you add words. Leaders will not add words without this.
  • You may not add more than 10,000 words at once.
  • Dailies and weeklies must be commented in the Main Cabin before they end, even if the description has not yet been updated.
  • Proof for dailies and weeklies must be shown on Scratch. There will not be exceptions to this rule for having inappropriate writing.
Proof of winning a word war isn't necessary - they're run on an honor system.
  • Please do not escalate arguments! Simply stop responding and report any offensive comments.
  • Make sure not to take cabin rivalries too far and remember that the point is to have fun!
Adding words

You can add words whenever you write literarily using your cabin’s word counting method - this will most likely mean commenting the number of words you wrote in your cabin’s word counting location (this will likely be a studio but could also be a forum, profile or project!) as well as a summary/brief description of what you are adding. (E.g. “+503 words for part of an essay”.)
Your leaders will add these words to your total.
We keep track of words during SWC as they make up part of a cabin’s total points at the end of the session as well as acting as a motivation factor for campers.

*See a list of things that count below:

What counts
  • Roleplay - As a guideline, you should be somewhat in character and there should be description of actions in addition to dialogue
  • Fictional writing
  • Non-fictional writing
  • Literary journal entries
  • Writing in another language - if you’re unsure on how many words to add because the language counts writing in a different way (e.g. character counts in Chinese), Google Translate it to English and use that word count. We hope that this will be close to the number of words it would be in spoken language, but if you have a different suggestion, please let us know!
  • Schoolwork - essays, assignments that include literary/analytical writing (such as worksheets requiring analysis of parts of a novel) but not note taking or non-literary writing such as writing out math problems
  • Giving critique (but only the words you wrote! If you gave 1000 words of critique but 300 of those were quotes of the original writing, add 700 words)
  • Stream of consciousness writing
  • Vents/rambles
  • Formal emails that are longer than a paragraph
  • Explanatory SWC dailies that are longer than a paragraph
  • Words from comics
  • Parodies (so long as it’s mostly your original thought)
As a general rule, if it contains your original ideas, it counts.

What doesn’t count
  • Notetaking
  • Texting, commenting, etc.
  • Copying another person’s writing
  • Translating
  • Writing thing out from memory / copying things out (e.g. copying out a textbook, lyric spam)
  • Code - even if using a text based programming language!
Needing proof
  • If your leader thinks that the amount you’re writing is unrealistic, they may ask for proof or choose not to add it.
  • You must outline what you were writing when you add words. Your leaders will not be allowed to add the words otherwise! (a sufficient outline could look like: “365 words were from an english worksheet, 1946 were from working on my novel, 568 from the daily, 2868 from working on an essay”. Be aware that a timespan for the writing is not a sufficient outline!)
  • If you are uncomfortable sharing proof for writing, that’s okay! Exceptions to giving proof (even for large blocks of writing) can be provided on an individual basis and you will have better luck getting one if you cooperate and are willing to give partial proof and detailed explanations/descriptions on what you’ve written. Other solutions to this can include giving a leader/host proof in a discreet location (on scratch of course - this could be editing an old forum post or putting it in a comment inside an old project).

Reserves
  • Reserves are words that you don’t add right away.
  • Only up to 10k words may be added at a time, regardless of whether or not you share the writing.
  • An exception may be granted if you were unable to access Scratch for over a week. Please contact a host if this is the case!
  • All words become reserves after camp is over in all timezones.

Activities
  • Activities must be submitted before they end in UTC, even if the Main Cabin description has not been updated yet!
  • Campers and leaders are expected to give all required proof for weeklies and dailies, and it must be submitted on time to earn points.
  • Proof must be provided on Scratch, and all writing must be Scratch appropriate if you need to provide proof for it. Photos of writing count as proof, and may be shared using a Scratch-approved image host.
Dailies
  • If you have a question about a daily, ask in the main cabin! Hosts and/or leaders will make a judgment on this - if you’re a camper, please refrain from answering any questions that are subject to interpretation (clarifying rules and such is fine!), leave it to the leaders and hosts please <3
  • Extensions for dailies are unavailable as there really isn’t any point in granting them given the low point value and short timeframe of dailies.
Weeklies
  • If you are uncomfortable sharing proof for a weekly, you should contact the hosts or your leader as early as possible. Exceptions to giving proof can be provided on an individual basis and you will have better luck getting one if you let us know early (as opposed to simply refusing to give proof when trying to add your weekly). Other solutions to this can include giving a leader/host proof in a discreet location (on scratch of course - this could be editing an old forum post or putting it in a comment inside an old project).
  • If you have queries about a weekly, try to wait until a host or member of the daily team can clarify.
  • Extensions for weeklies can be granted on an individual basis. You should let the hosts know as early as possible and you can discuss it with us from there.

Writing Competition, Word Wars, & Cabin Wars

Information on these events is provided as time progresses during the session. However, if you have any questions beforehand, you’re more than welcome to reach out to a host with them!

⚡️ Honoraries

Honoraries are people who are NOT participating in a session of SWC, but are invited by a leader to hang out in a cabin as an unofficial member and boost morale and/or have a role in the storyline. However, they are restricted from doing anything that leaders would typically do, such as adding words. They may not be listed in the cabin description.

If you would like to partake in a different cabin's activities or storyline, you can ask that leader if you can do so. This does NOT make you an honorary. Rather, you are just a member of a cabin who is participating in the activities of another cabin. The leader may agree or refuse (and they may decide how much of a role you can have and which of the activities you may do), and you are expected to be accepting of any decision they make. Leaders are also not allowed to list people who do this in the cabin description, and they cannot make any further contributions than completing the activities.

Anyone is welcome to hang out or boost cabin morale in other cabins at any point. Do try to be the most enthusiastic in your own cabin, though — your fellow campers will appreciate it!

Please see this project if you have more questions.

Arguments and Drama
  • If any links to leader discussions are leaked, please ignore the comments. If it can be classified as spam, you can report the comments, but please don’t mass report with multiple accounts as that can lead to alerts from the ST.
  • If you get into a fight with anyone, it’s best to stop responding so it doesn’t escalate. You can ask your leader or a host for help. Of course, report any offensive material you see as part of such an argument (e.g. projects calling people to report a specific user or people speaking badly about others).
  • Please take care to not take cabin rivalries too far! Using this tone indicators guide can be helpful in ensuring that no one’s feelings get hurt. If you do feel that someone has gone beyond friendly jokes, you can remind them that it’s just for fun, report the comments, or ask a leader/host for help, depending on what you feel fits the situation!
Thanks for reading all of this! Again, if you have any questions or believe there should be an exception, please comment on a host's profile, not in this forum

A MUSEUM, NIGHT.

The group shudders as Finn leads them through the museum.
“Okay, this place is really creeping me out. Are you like, 100% sure there’s not another way to get to the hideout?” Cody said with another shudder.
“Yep. And before you ask, I quadrouple checked.” Fine replied. Cody let off a moan.
“I’m never going this way again. Every time we walk through here, it’s like there’s something new everytime.” he said, groaning.
“Yeah, like that creepy stature guy over there that looks insanely real!
“Wait,” Finn said as she spun around. “-what? What did you say?”
“I said,” Felix told her, clearing his throat. “-that stature over there looks insanely real.” he said, pointing at the statue. Everyone’s head turned as quick as he pointed, and Finn glanced at it.
“Wh- that wasn’t here before, I checked last ni…” Finn slowly cut off her sentence. Everyone froze. Finally, Skye decided to break the daunting silence.
“Uh, so, not sure if it’s just me so please don’t totally freak when I say this buuuut, is it MOVING?”
“…it is.” a dep voice said, undoubtably coming from the statue.

The mood in the common room was tense. Everyone was staring at the floor, wait for the decision from Mr. Carter. All of their eyebrows were furrowed as they intensely thought up all the possibilities, until a large snap from both sides of the room broke the silence. Skye jumped up.
"Ugh, now they have the same habits and they do them at the same time!“ Skye announced, loudly.
”It's not my fault my nails grow fast!“ Finn quickly replied.
”I know but like, you could've picked any moment to bite them, and you chose the moment Felix did!“ Tom interjected. Felix snorted, but stayed still and quiet in the beanbag chair he was in.
”Ooor, Felix chose the moment Finley did-“
”-okay, no, I did not.“ Felix said, breaking his silence.
”It was merely a coincidence!“ Finn said.
”Yeah, we both bite our nails, okay? No big deal. I honestly hate the habit, but it does keep our nails sharp in case we have to-“
”Wait, how do you know her nails are sharp?“ Sam interrupted.
”Ooh ooh ooh, do you guys scratch-“
”NO!“ Felix and Finley both yelled loudly.
”-ahem,“ a voice said coming from the door way. ”Am I interrupting something“
”Oh, we were just talking about how Finn and Fel-“
”I talked to the Foster care office.“ Mr. Carter said, breaking Tom off. The room went quiet.
”Yeah, no way.“ Felix said.
”Listen, I know you're going to hate it, I know you don't like taking instructions and living with adults, but this is for the best.“ Mr. Carter explained.
”So you're saying you're fine with up being alone, in a house, with people you don't know?“ Finn said.
”Finn, it's temporary, we need you safe. Plus, no, you're actually going to be in groups.“ That sparked Felix's attention.
”What are they groups?“ Felix asked, hopefully.
”Chris, Sam, and Tom,“ Mr. Carter told him, which made Sam roll her eyes.
”Yay, I get to deal with the two messiest boys in the multiverse.“ Sam said, throwing up her hands.
”It's only for a month, Sam.“ Chris said. ”This is going to be so much fun.“ he said with a snicker, which earned another eye roll from Sam.
”Where's Finn?“ Felix said, pressing on.
”Don't worry, you're with her,“ Mr. Carter replied, and Finn glanced at Felix and smiled. ”But Skye is going with you."

You open your eyes and find yourself in a warmly-lit room. Wood paneling covers the walls wherever there isn't a bookshelf–and that's not in very many places. Tall bookshelves line the walls, crammed with tons of different books and notebooks. A desk sits in front of a window that offers a spectacular mountain view. You cross the fluffy white carpet and look at the desk. A few notebooks lay open on the desk, you see a gold one, a green one, a blue one, and a red one, as well as random pieces of paper and a page that has been torn out of something, all filled with the same handwriting. You decide not to read them yet and take one more glance around, noticing the art on the walls for the first time, and all the knickknacks. You are suddenly curious as to who this room belongs to, who this person is. You turn back to the desk and begin to read…

March 1st: If I were a book, I would be a thick, hardcover dystopian-fantasy volume with a detailed, vibrant cover and a tasseled silk bookmark. Most of my pages would be well-loved and soft, but some would be stiff and unread. The edge of the pages would be that uneven style that I love to run my fingers across, and there would be a damage notice on the inside cover for tears, stains, water-warped pages, and graffiti.

Some Short True Story I Haven't Named Yet
Eskura, the tall pine tree in my front yard, surrounded by a sea of snow-blanketed dead grass waiting for spring, growing next to Feronia, the mysterious bush, who's in the pine family but a self-claimed ‘unidentifiable’. Despite their differences, and Feronia being only a fraction of Eskura's height, the two of them are best friends, branches intertwined. Eskura is kind and calm, the home of a family of mourning doves in past seasons, and also the home of a family of small loud birds. A tunnel of sorts runs between Eskura and Feronia, a quicker way to get to the front door of my home if you're approaching from the west on the sidewalk. Eskura is strong and brave, but on the inside she is scared. Feronia is dying. If you cut away the fresh green growth, you reveal a core of brown, dead branches. and despite being an evergreen, this winter, Feronia has turned mostly brown. Eskura holds out hope that Freonia will recover in the warmth of the summer, but deep down she dreads the loss of her friend. She waits eagerly for spring, not only because Feronia might recover, but because of the purplish-blue flowers that grow on the ground around her. She doesn't know if they were planted or just grew naturally, but they are always exuberant and full of life, and always excited to listen to her stories of years before.

you have no idea where you are or how you got here, but somehow, you are sitting in an extravagant den. spacious and over-the-top, you’re blinded on all sides by the dazzling diamonds in the walls. a figure robed in silver steps out from behind a giant doorway. “welcome to the underhomes,” they smile. “you may be confused right now—i was, too, when i first came here—but soon you’ll forget everything from your old life…”

Weekly #1 - Timelines
2265 total words

(spoiler warning - arcane)

Part 1 - The Butterfly Effect (592 words)

Event: In a final attempt at self-rediscorder, Powder holds a family tea party, in which she gathers all those she loves, have loved, and wish they loved, as well as those she wish loved her. She wishes Vi would love her like she used to, and believes that this, all of this identity crisis, family disaster, undercity-top side war, it's all Silco’s fault. Crawling through the cracks deep inside of Powder, Jinx is the monster that lives within – she believes the Vi abandoned her, and Silco is her only true father. Such a dinner could never end in civility, of course – when Jinx loses control, Silco lays fatally wounded at her hands.

#1 - Realizing what she’s done, Jinx runs over to Silco as she calms to her senses. With his final breaths, Silco reminds her that she, whoever she may be, is perfect, and he would never have given her up for the world. As her father’s final breath fades, Jinx gets up, a final resolution in her eyes – she knows what this world deserves, for what it’s done to her, to her father, and to so many others around them – it’s time for the world to burn. Only in the ashes of heartbreak might a brighter ember arise; only in the midst of an fiery explosion might the phoenix take to the skies. Despite their promises of peace, she takes a deep breath before aiming her rocket out the council’s chamber, and, quite, simply, fires. In the wake of the disaster, outright war breaks out – with no leader of Piltover, nor of Zaun, nothing can stop the boiling conflict from spilling over the river’s basins, beyond the bridge.

#2 - With a heartbreaking sob, Powder runs over to Vi, her only remaining family, and unties her bonds before curling up into a sobbing heap at her feet. In the background, Caitlyn vanishes into the shadows, leaving only the two sisters, just as it once was, and always should have been. “Powder…” Vi whispers, reaching out to wipe away her tears, “it’s okay. It’s over now.” // And so it is. In the wake of Silco’s death and the end of his empire, the council passes the peace measure, along the Nation of Zaun to become its own independent state. The two sisters run together, to a life far, far away, where they’ll never be hurt again, leaving these twin cities behind to the mercy of those who remain.

#3 - Silence shattering like glass around her, Jinx tumbles to the cement floor and cries, coming back to herself. In what feels like a far off land, Silco’s voice comforts her, but it’ll never be enough. They’ll never love her, not even if they tried… so why should she love this world? This world, that’s taken so much from her and given so little, snatched every joy, every smile from her innocent face and threw it in the river, that river of blood. It’s time for this, all of this, to be over. Ignoring Vi’s screams, she walks out the door, eventually finding her way to the council chamber, where she turns herself into the authorities. Let them have her. After all this time, give them what they want. It’s time for Jinx to say goodbye, and for Powder to vanish with her. For her crimes, she will be executed – with no leader, the undercity dissolves into chaos, leaving Vi to take up what would have been her sister's throne and rebuild her world, in hopes of making it a better place. A better place, for children like them.

Part 2 - Linear Storylines (547/500)

#1 - Lily stares at a blank piece of paper, a pencil gripped tightly in her hand.

Staring at the blank slate lying in front of her, Lily watches as invisible words dance across the page, never seen, never heard. They leap and twirl, the arms and legs stretching just beyond her finger tips, forever just beyond her grasp. The rhythm, the beat to which they seamlessly dance, it flows openly around her, rising with her chest, falling with her slowly breathing out, lifting the ever pristine paper waiting for a story, a story long awaited. To Lily, time is an endless void of crystalline sand, always floating aloft the waves, always sinking down below, dragged from her helpless hands – an eternal cycle. A beautiful circle, but never one she’d call her own.

#2 - Lily thinks about the story she wishes to tell, remembering the story of her sister.

Perhaps time wasn’t a flower of her personal garden, but still, there was another, something she’d treasure the blossoms over, as if their life could hold some semblance of what was was, what their namesake carries. Memories of their pure, innocent scent waft through Lily’s mind, the sea salt air overtaking that of pristine petals. Somewhere in the distance, she hears herself screaming against the tides, watching as her sister reaches for her, watching as their chapter closes… a storyline of the past, yet a story ever present. Sometimes the hardest things are those most worthy of remembrance, if only we would hold on.

#3 - Lily’s frustration builds, wishing the words would just fall out.

She grips her pencil tighter, nearly snapping it in half before switching to a pen, hoping the letters might spill from the ink cartridge, as if just waiting for the chance to burst free of their metal cage. But still, the threads of ink refuse to form words, their stubborn droplets carefully reading Lily’s pen. She starts to bite her lip, wondering what it is that she’s doing wrong. Is it her mood? Is she hungry? Should she try again another day? Or should she wait for the puzzle to fall in place, for the silent words to make themselves seen, to wait for the world to listen to what they wish to say.

#4 - Lily realizes that’s always a place to start, and begins to ponder new possibilities.

Of course, that could always be a wonderful place to start, a lens through which to tell her story, her sister's story. A story of words that could never slip through the cracks, that would never break free of their relentless confinement, fight as she might to drag them back from the tides. Words left unspoken, words left floating through the air, as if someday, someone might find them and bring them down to paper for others to see. Sometimes it's the most creative solutions that fit the puzzle perfectly, something Lily wishes she’d learned all those years ago. Still, better late than never at all.

#5 - Lily begins to write about her wish for words to slip through the silence.

Settling down, Lily sets her pen to paper and begins to write. Write about her voice among the waves, about her voice among the world. About what she wished she could have said, to her sister and her first parents, to the friends she once had and the world that was once hers. A world she’d long left behind, that she’d walked away from under the bridge. She writes about the song carried on in her heart, about what it means to be a lily in the dark, something to hold on to forever. And she writes about silence, the endless crusade of the words left unspoken.

Part 3 - Nonlinear Storylines (281/250)

Lily uses writing as a way to travel back in time, revisiting moments of her past of great importance to who she is today, watching from subtle hiding places as a way to avoid ever changing anything. She knows her own power, and understands that she can never alter the timestream, but nonetheless finds her writing to be a valuable tool in remembering what once was.

a – lily begins to write, watching the words form on her paper with a deep, thoughtful concentration
a – the story begins to unfold on her page in front of her, the details of the setting and characters becoming clearer and clearer
b – slowly, the writing scene fades out into the place she’s writing about – a very fancy house, where a little girl appears to be curled up on the stairs, trying not to cry
a – lily continues writing, her world seemingly normal, still left in that bedroom desk chair with nothing but what always has surrounding her
b – narrator perspective watches from the balcony as the younger girl looks around before tears silently stream down her cheeks, the outburst of older figures growing louder from below
a – lily fades out of her bedroom to the house mentioned in the other timeline, still writing as she goes
ab - lily takes on the narrative perspective, still atop the balcony rail, notebook and pencil still in hand
ab - lily watches the younger girl, recognizing her as her younger self, wishing she could offer some empathy or comfort to her while understand that in this past timestream, she could never change anything
b - the girl gets up, as if to go outside
a - lily fades back to her room, sitting exactly as she was, as if nothing ever happened

Part 4 - (845/750)

Pressing the tip of her pen into her crinkling notebook page, Lily closes her eyes, wondering what it is that itches to engrave itself in her paper, that seeks to break free of the bars of her mind and waft through the air on the scent of fresh ink, the scent of a story bursting through the pages of reality. Somewhere in her past, she imagines a young girl swinging over the freshly mowed grass, its edges sharp and taunting, waiting for her down below. She soars up, tilting her head back to the sky, breathing in the ocean air. She swoops down, grinning with the thrill of adrenaline, arms stretched out like the claws of a bird ready to snatch its prey.

A beautiful scene, and a happy one at that. But no story of hers could ever be so perfectly cheerful, no childhood swing could ever tell the full story.

Sitting on a stairwell of simply, well cut oak, a girl waits, as if for someone. One hand clenching the twist, engraved railing, the other holding her knees in tight, she curls up into a ball, as if to become one with the stairs, beyond the sight of the unattentive passerby. To her right, a windowless wall rises, painted in simple shades of beige and adorned with little but an elaborately framed portrait. In painted brushstrokes sits a boy, eyes on the girl, as if watching her every move. Behind him stand a man and a woman, their faces stone cold and serious, the women holding a sleeping child. A younger portrayal of the girl.

Looking up at the scene, the girl trembles, eyes watering with tears, a volcano awaiting eruption. She bites her lip, fidgeting with her dress’s hem, but little distracts her from the boy she stares out at.

Sighing, Lily picks up the corner of her page, folding the entire thing in on itself, watching it collapse into a ball of nothingness, just like the castle of sand she would build as a child. She sinks back in her soft, cushioned desk chair, pausing there briefly before sitting back up. Taking a deep breath, she sets her pen to a fresh page and begins again, this time diving into a place of sleek furniture and minimalist rooms, a mansion of little but a little girl’s childhood sorrows. She begins to detail the scene, imagining the engraved balcony rails of her past, watching the word paint a vivid tapestry of what once was her world before her eyes.

With every breath, every passing phrase, the world grows sharper and sharper, as if not simply the past, but her present surroundings, even as she remained firmly in her seat.

As she gazes out at the stationary boy, tears cautiously slide out of her eyes, as if hesitant to roll down the child’s pristine cheeks. The boy- her brother- remains ever static, his restful gaze forever glued to his sister, watching as her tears slipped through the cracks of her glittering facade.

Somewhere in the house, perhaps on an upper floor, a pair of voices steadily grow louder, their conversation too incoherent to be understood. Still, the girls' tears gather closer, their slight drizzle fading into a steady rain.

Yet as she continues to write, filling in the details of all that surrounds her, of the girl, and of her struggles, the timestream slowly shifts, its threads weaving her back to one day when she was that girl. Keeping her eyes on her writing, Lily adjusts to the hard wood of the balcony rail without a sound, wondering what it is the past wishes to remind her of as she relives it in her work.

Lifting her eyes, she gazes down at her younger self, an often cheerful child, when the storm clouds left her to her swings. Perhaps not literally, but in the distance, she can hear a pair of voices at war with hearts, a pair of voices belonging to her long deserted parents. Once upon a time, perhaps she could have loved them, gone to fairs, eaten pastries, what you would expect from a happy child. But as she gazes down at her younger self below, all that matters is why she ran, why she took off and never looked back.

Watching younger Lily, she can’t help but wish she could reach out and tell her all she wished that someone once had told her; that everything was going to be alright. She watches as her child stares out at her long gone brother, the brother who’d run, who’d left her behind, who’d vanished and left her nothing but a note.

We’ll meet again someday, he said.

Someday… as if someday could be soon. But as the tears of the past slipped down her cheeks, Lily had realized that, well, someday would be no day soon.

With a final glance of sympathy for who she had been, Lily closes her eyes, imagining the present as it would be.

Back in her room, in her comfy chair.

And so she was.
