What goes into making LCD games?

Lame stuff like the POP station.

I kinda want to make my own, so I'm wondering what goes into making one.

first eat ashens. then barf it and he will watch a pop station.

disassemble the pop station.

lol jk you need to know this

This does not exactly contribute to the discussion

Anyhoo, if you want to actually do this, you can most likely look into the Arduino, as that could be a decent base for you to build your project on top of.

Ooh, the Arduino looks cool! Pretty expensive, though (or at least for me, anyway. I'm twelve so I don't get that much money) - now I'm already torn between what to get for my birthday which is over 5 months away

Hmmm… a ton of Lego, another rodent, Arduino, hamster stuff, or tons of random Asian food. Probably Lego, Arduino, or hamster stuff. I doubt I'd be allowed any more pets and the other possible presents sound significantly cooler than Asian food. I'm still going to have Chinese food on my birthday though.

Also, I actually want to do this because I saw Ashens review the Cybiko. Why couldn't they have had that range on pictochat? WHY WAS PICTOCHAT REMOVED? Uhh, this is getting off-topic

But anyway, the Arduino looks really cool. Do the starter kits come with the screen, do I have to buy the screen as an extra from them, or would I have to mutilate a cheap LCD game from the pound shop?

You'll probably want something like this: Sparkfun 11851, however note compatibility. Your best bet is to get an Arduino Uno.

I've got an Arduino Uno for Christmas this year, and it came with an LCD character display. However, you'll probably want to go on freetronics and get this awesome thing so you can display graphics with many colors. Perhaps you got money from relatives for christmas if you celebrate it?

I did get some money, but I've already spent £15 (mainly instant noodles) and the rest is going towards making suitable hamster cages (darn pets at home and their “large” plastic hamster homes!). That costs a lot more than the money I got, probably because my presents were so expensive this year (a laptop and hamsters - the combination is basically why I exist). Still, I'll find some way to buy the screen - then I can make a games console with Lego for a case

I definitely will! Also, one last thing: What programming language would I need to learn?

It's a foggy C dialect that you can't really discern what it is…
Here's the guide from arduino:

Hopefully I'll be able to learn that. Can't be too difficult

The hard part is hardware.

May as well contribute a little.
I've done something similar to what you are after using an SSD 1306 OLED display.
it's a clone of flappy birds, it's pretty simple, but shows the kind of code you'll have to produce.
Here's the code.

I wonder if there's some way to load code onto a SD card and have the arduino execute the code that's on the SD…

Nope.
The code needs to be compiled onto the on-board memory

The code needs to be compiled onto the on-board memory
technically, you could write an interpreter for python or some language and have it run the contents of the card…
but that wouldn't be practical.

Pretty useless too.
The language used by Arduino is easy to understand, only took me about a week to be writing decent sketches.

You could potentially execute the Processing code off an SD card, but the bigger issue is the hardware.

You may be able to use this shield but I have not checked to see if the pins overlap with the display yet.

To write a code-intepreter thing off an SD, you could use this nice combo LCD/sd reader made by Arduino.
