Probably to make the interface less confusing. Green flag is the universal start button, and stop sign is the universal stop button. You can do other inputs with your keyboard and by clicking on sprites.

No.

I believe they were used like broadcasts, but they changed it so that you could have as many broadcasts as you like and not be limited to however many flag colors it had.

No, that wasn’t taught back then, and just because it has many colors (even rainbow colors) does not mean it’s that.

They were a precursor to broadcasts. Instead of choosing a custom name as you can now, you were forced to use the few provided to you. They still exist in a sort of way in Scratch Jr, where instead of flags, it's different colored envelopes.

Those were the old versions of broadcasts. It was switched to the new broadcast system so you can have as many broadcasts as you like. There were only a limited number of flags, so the broadcast system is better. It's highly unlikely that broadcasts will be reverted back to the colored flags.
