I was now a known criminal.
All I had wanted to do was go through the Sky Kingdom to explore the Galaxswc. I didn’t know I was trespassing!
So now I was stuck on this asteroid, going who knows where, with the crazy king of the Sky Kingdom chasing me, all while I’m stuck as a little yellow canary.
Right, everyone who goes into the Sky Kingdom gets turned into a bird. Which is why they said I was trespassing - because I wasn’t a bird. At least, not at the start.
My asteroid was hurtling into space and it must’ve had some sort of atmosphere because I was able to breathe. But other than the bright tail of flame on it, I couldn’t see anything.
Then, all of the sudden, a gold and green misted planet appeared in front of me. I gave a squawk and hurried away as fast as possible before the asteroid rammed into it with a force that threw me off.
I woke to find myself lying in a clearing filled with flowers. Looking over, I saw the asteroid that had plowed through the ground, leaving a trail of broken trees and upturned dirt. I sat up and saw myself in a silky white dress, two round pins fastening it at the shoulders.
I felt puzzled. I was a bird - why would I be wearing a dress? Then I saw my hands. And my feet. I felt my hair, wavy, and saw the fiery color of it.
I laughed. I was human!
Soft music distracted me from my transformation, and I stood up and followed it. It lilted through the leaves of the trees, which also had sunlight shining through them.
It was a beautiful forest, paired with beautiful music, and I almost couldn’t tell if I was or wasn’t dreaming.
I saw another clearing and walked into it, finding a stone plaza and seven statues lining the edge. Four of the statues wore dresses like I did, while the other three wore togas. They were all frozen in place as if they had been in the middle of singing or telling a story.
I touched the base of one of them, reading the name on it. “Alexandra,” I mused. Her statue shimmered as I spoke her name.
I stepped back cautiously. Then a ring of sparkles traveled down her, turning every part of her into reality. Her curly black hair moved as her eyes opened and her olive skin flushed.
“Freya,” she replied. Her voice was lower, husky but sweet. My jaw dropped. How did she know my name? She only smiled in reply and stepped off the pedestal her statue had been on.
“Zoe!” she cried out. One of the other statues transformed. “Athena, Paris!”
One by one, their statues transformed into humans, each calling out another name. “Atlas! Orion! Leon!”
All seven statues gathered in the middle of the plaza, freezing when they had formed a circle.
Alexandra popped out in the middle of it and started to sing, the others moving around her as she did.
Now you don’t know there is a curse
The King of Sky only made it worse
All of the worlds are kept apart
When kept apart we have no heart
Without a heart we all will crumble
And those banished will begin to rumble
But there is something to heal us all
Now listen carefully, or we will fall
She ceased singing. “There are fifteen planets in the Galaxswc. Each has a special Gem. Find and combine all of the Gems and you will make the legendary Heart of Writing. Hurry, Freya, we do not have much time.”
I paused as they moved back to their podiums. “Wait, how do I find them?”
Alexandra turned to me. “They will call to you.” Then she turned back into stone. I sat at the base of Leon’s podium and thought. How would they call to me? Then I heard it.
It was a whisper of sorts. I stepped forward, listening. Then I stepped forward again. It seemed like it was coming from the middle of the plaza. I walked over and peered at the mishappen green stone in the center. Carefully prying it out, I gasped as it became warm in my hand. This was a Gem. I looked over at Alexandra. Her face had changed from when I had first seen her. Now it said ‘Go’.
I ran out of the clearing, back to the flowers where I had first woken. “How do I get off?” I muttered to myself. Then I looked over to the asteroid, only to it glowing red. Running over, I grabbed a stick and poked the rock. To my surprise, the stick didn’t burn. I carefully pressed a finger on it. The rock was only slightly warm. I climbed onto it and it started to rise up toward the sky. I smiled - only to find out I was back to being a bird. Oh well.
The asteroid approached a blue planet with rings. As it hurtled in, I realized the planet was completely covered in water.
Too late. The asteroid plunged through the waves and sank toward the bottom, taking me with it. As it plowed through the sand, I found myself stuck in the sand. I was sinking!
Barely managing to grab the green and gold Gem from the last planet in time, I sank through the sand before I . . . fell.
The fall seemed to go on forever. It was pitch black the whole entire time, so I couldn’t see a thing. I did notice that I had once again turned into a human and was wearing some sort of long-sleeved pantsuit, but I didn’t take much notice of it, only focusing on the long fall through what seemed to be a large tube, and trying very hard not to be sick.
Then I splashed into the water at the very bottom, which immediately swept me sideways with its current.
I managed to take a deep breath before I was submerged by the rushing water. Tossed and turned by the current, my lungs burned as my air slipped away. Finally, when I couldn’t hold my breath for a second longer, I took a deep breath, expecting to choke on water.
Instead, I choked on air. I gasped, sending myself into another fit of coughing. How was this possible? I could feel the water on my face, yet I was breathing. Or, I was until I saw the glow before me.
The current lessened and I swam forward, swimming toward the blue glow in the center of the enormous room I had just entered. When I was close enough to see it, I was in awe.
It was a pure blue Gem, shaped like a shard of ice. Kicking myself forward, I paused in the water and wrapped my hand around the Gem. Like before, it became warm in my hand. Unlike before, it started to pull me up.
Through the ceiling.
I popped out next to the asteroid, still underwater, and climbed onto it as it rocketed off into space again.
I placed the two Gems next to each with my bird feet. There was a ridge on each of them that looked like it matched perfectly with the other. Did I really get two matching pieces?
I pushed them together, only for them to clink.
Nope.
I glanced up to see if the asteroid had found a world yet, only to find out we were landing in one. I grabbed my Gems and hid them under my wings, only to see they were now hands again. Gloved hands.
I looked down to see I was clad all in black. Black shoes, black pants, black shirt, black everything. I even saw a black mask that spooked me so much I left it. I turned around to find myself in a dark room, instead of the dark and gloomy forest I had been in previously.
And on a table in the middle of the room was the black mask. I turned back around only to see the same table.
One thing was clear - I had to wear the mask. So I stepped forward and picked it up. It would only cover around my eyes, the bridge of my nose, and a bit of my forehead. It’s not that bad, I told myself, placing it on my face.
I was instantly transported to a dark cavern. Others milled around me, all dressed in black like me. I saw a misty figure through the people, the only sign of light.
I ran after it.
The figure moved quickly, and I rammed into people as I tried to keep up, apologizing as I ran forward.
“Wait!” I called.
The figure stopped. I stopped a few feet in front of it.
Who are you?
“Freya,” I replied.
Why are you here and what do you want from me?
“I’m trying to find the Gem for this world. To create the Heart of Writing. Do you know where it is?”
If the figure had eyebrows, they would have shot off of its forehead. The Heart of Writing? That is a dangerous quest indeed. Very well, I will help you. The Gem in this world is lost. Luckily, I know someone who can summon it.
“Thank you,” I said. The figure waved me forward through a dark corridor and we emerged in an enormous throne room. Other ghost-like figures milled through the room, all stopping when they saw me. I followed the figure up to the throne and stopped when I saw what resided there.
It was a huge ghost.
The figure stepped forward.
Your Ghostliness, I have brought you a subject looking for the Horror Gem.
The Ghost rotated slowly.
THE HORROR GEM, it boomed. YOU ARE WISHING TO BUILD THE HEART OF WRITING?
I nodded meekly.
VERY WELL.
The Ghost began to move its hands as if making a ball. Then there was a flash of light.
When I’d recovered enough to see again, there was a Gem floating in the air. The Ghost directed it down toward me and I carefully took it in my hand. This Gem grew cold, and when it did, I suddenly found myself back by the asteroid. Peeling off the mask and leaving it on the ground, I clambered onto the rock.
The Horror Gem, as the figure had called it, was strangely misshapen. As I compared it to the other two, I determined it was a completely different part.
The asteroid slammed down into a shimmering field. I flew off, my arms pinwheeling as I crashed into the grass. The Gems clinked down next to me. I reached for them, only to find that someone had already taken them.
“Those are mine,” I said, looking straight at the boy who was examining them.
“Are they though?” He replied, with an unplaceable accent. I paused. There were whispers again. I stepped forward.
The whispers were coming from him.
“Yes,” I said, peering at him. His skin was translucent, and reflected the light. Where his heart would be I could see a bright white chunk of rock - a Gem.
“Why do you -”
He looked up, as if suddenly recognizing me. “I was told to guard the Gem. I was told a girl would crash here one day. She would ask for it. She’d already have three others with her - more than most people.
“This Gem is part of me. To remove it would result in my perishing.”
“Oh,” I replied.
“I was also told that I was meant to be more than just the guardian of the Dystopian Gem. They told me I was meant to guard the Heart of Writing.” He handed me the Gems.
“You’re the one the Sky King hates so much!”
He nodded. “That Horror Gem will connect with the Dystopian Gem. So will the Folklore Gem. I can retreat into the Dystopian Gem, but be warned - the longer it takes you to find the rest, the sooner I’ll fade. If you don’t have a guardian for the Heart of Writing, the Sky King will either destroy the Galaxswc or attempt to rule it.”
“I’ll try to be as quick as I can,” I promised.
The boy nodded and said, “Here, you’ll need this.”
He conjured a sling bag before turning into a flash of light. The Gem fell to the ground. I picked both it and the bag up and ran back to the asteroid.
As it moved back into space, I laid out the gems and connected them. Three of the Gems fit together, leaving the blue one alone. I slid them into the bag and slid the strap around my bird head.
The asteroid hurtled toward a red planet with a strange yellow musical note on it. The surface growing larger by the second, I realized the asteroid was going to crash straight through the roof of a building. I ducked just in time, covering my head with my arms. The ground shuddered and I looked up slowly. There was a hole in the ceiling of the building from the asteroid. I looked around and discovered that we’d crashed into a theater. There were props lying around onstage and sheets of lines were scattered around. Picking on up, I read;
FREYA: I’ll try to be as quick as I can.
ALISTER: (nods) Here, you’ll need this.
conjures a sling bag, then turns into a flash of light.
I dropped the sheet. This place was creeping me out. I just had to find the Gem and be gone.
It’s near.
“W-who’s there?” I squeaked, grabbing the nearest thing I could find - a microphone stand - and holding it out in front of me.
It’s me, silly.
“G-gem boy?”
My name is Alister, actually, but I suppose I never told you that. As I was saying, the Gem is near.
I paused and listened. The theater was deathly quiet, before I heard the whispers.
Looking around, I noticed the noise was louder if I was looking toward the stage. Then I looked up.
“Well, I found it,” I said. “But it’s really high up.”
There should be a ladder somewhere around here.
“I found one,” I replied, dragging the ladder over and positioning it so it was in reach of the Gem. Climbing up, I leaned forward and pried it out of the decorations above-stage.
I looked at it and hurried down the ladder, placing the Gem in my bag and running over to the asteroid. As it left the planet, I heard an evil cackle from somewhere behind me. The Sky King!
You should hurry. You only have two thirds of the total gems left!
“I will,” I whispered, clutching my bag. I looked down. “I’m not a bird anymore!”
The spell must have worn off, but now the Sky King will know exactly where you are. Hurry, hurry!
The asteroid hurtled toward the next planet. However, it didn’t crash like I thought it would. Instead, I was teleported into a seat in a movie theater, the air thick with the stench of popcorn. I jumped up immediately, dodging the people milling through the theater and I ran up the stairs to the top. Stopping to catch my breath, I strained my ears for the whispers of the Gem.
It was right next to my foot.
I looked down to see a pair of 3d glasses. Picking it up, I felt both of the lenses, before finding out the right was growing warm. I popped it out and ran toward the exit, opening the door only to find blank space.
Jump.
“Are you kidding? I’ll fall into space!”
You won’t, you’ll teleport back to the asteroid. The Bi-Fi planet may be crazy, but this I know for sure.
I slid the Gem into my bag. Closing my eyes tight, I jumped.
I ended up back on the asteroid just like Alister said.
“How did you know?” I asked, puzzled.
I’ve been there before. Or at least, I think I have. It’s a relatively new planet.
“Wow,” I said, refocusing on the Gems. The three I had connected earlier were still connected. I slid it in with the Bi-Fi Gem, as Alister told me, and it fit together perfectly. The blue Gem connected with the other side of the Bi-Fi Gem, and I was starting to see the shape of a heart form.
“I can see it making a heart,” I said, directing my attention to the glowing white Dystopian Gem.
That’s good. You shouldn’t have far to go anymore. The next planet is just around here, right?
I glanced up and shrieked, scooping up the Gems and diving for cover. The asteroid shook as it landed. I glanced up and saw a Gem floating in mid-air. I reached for it, only to contact a barrier.
I stood up and examined the floating Gem. “How do I get it out?” I asked no one in particular.
I don’t know. Maybe try to see if it’ll connect with any of the Gems you already have?
I glanced at the floating Gem again, then checked the red Gem with the note. The grooves matched perfectly. I pushed the Gem forward and watched as it sank through the barrier before snapping together with the floating Gem.
“Um, well, it took my Gem.”
I don’t know if that’s good or bad. Maybe try another?
I grabbed the remaining Gems. All of them were connected to at least one other Gem.
I held both up, intending to see if there were any matching sides, when the floating cube sucked them out of my hands. They clinked against the already floating Gems and suddenly took on a heart shape.
“Alister!” I said. “It’s like a mold!”
You found the structure of the heart? Place your hand on it.
I obliged, placing my hand on the box. When they touched, the box glowed.
“It’s glowing,” I whispered.
That’s the Structure for sure. Wait a few more seconds, it’ll do something.
As soon as he finished his sentence the box broke. I cried out and attempted to catch the Gems, but they remained floating in mid-air. Then, slowly, they floated down to me, still in a heart shape.
I took the Gem-Structure in my hands and looked at it in awe.
“Wow,” I said. Alister laughed, a beautiful ringing noise in my head.
You’re funny. Now, this is your seventh Gem. One more planet and you’ll be over halfway through. Now, hurry! The Sky King might have gained more . . . space, I guess. You’re almost there!
He fell silent and I carefully stowed the Gem thing in my bag. The asteroid grew red hot again and lifted off of the ground, rotating slightly before blasting off into space.
Before long, the asteroid crashed into a rather bread-looking planet. I smelled fresh bread in the air as I walked toward a small and quaint little bakery.
A soft tinkle from a bell as I opened the door greeted me, along with a blast of warm, bread smelling air. I took a deep breath and sighed pleasantly. I loved bread.
“It smells amazing, doesn’t it?”
I looked around before finding the voice, which came from an orange tabby cat behind the counter. “Baking is wonderful. My mother used to do it, and so do I! Welcome to the Purrfection Confection!”
“It’s beautiful here!” I said, straining my ears for any whispers. I whipped my head to the left when I heard them as clear as day. A frame behind the counter, where this was an amber Gem - shaped like a loaf of bread.
I laughed all of the sudden. The cat glanced at me, confused. Then her eyes widened.
“Freya,” she breathed. “My great-aunt Topsy told me about you! She said ‘One day, a human would come to your bakery, hoping to save the Galaxswc. Give her the Gem you guard, and you will live long and happy, with the Sky King gone forever.’ Never liked the Sky King. I hate birds, and he keeps turning everyone into birds! Awful thing indeed.”
She took down the picture frame and removed the Gem.
“Wait,” I said. “Why are you giving it to me? What if I want to give it to the Sky King? Why are you trusting me?”
The cat looked at me sternly. “My great-aunt Topsy was wrong about some things, but right about many. This is one of the things she was right about. Take it dear, and save us all.”
I took the Gem and slid it into my bag. It clinked and I suspected it had found its proper spot on the heart.
“Thank you,” I said. “I won’t forget this.”
“Of course not,” the cat said. “But here, take some food. You look famished!”
She slid a wrapped sandwich across the counter. I picked it up, thanking her and leaving the bakery, running back to my asteroid and once again blasting off.
As the asteroid was heading towards a planet, I suddenly felt a little tug. Glancing around, I looked up just in time to be yanked into the gravity of another planet.
Looking up, I was shocked to see a world full of pixels. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw a trash can glitch before turning into a mailbox. I had to get out of here before something bad happened. I turned to run but stopped. I felt like I had been here before. Or something like this had happened before. Something felt familiar but alien all at the same time. I shook my head and tried to focus as I ran around searching for whispers, but I couldn’t shake the feeling. Suddenly I understood.
“Of course,” I whispered. “It’s right here.”
I reached my arm forward and sure enough, the area around it glitched and I pulled out a Gem from nowhere. As soon as I grabbed it, I was back on my asteroid. I slid the Gem in my bag as the asteroid crashed into the next planet.
I shivered as the asteroid blew up a pile of snow. Hurrying to the nearest building I could find, I staggered inside only to find people smiling menacingly at me.
I turned around to run only to find yet another person, locking the door.
“Do you want this?” one of them said, holding up a red and gold Gem. I opened and closed my mouth a few times before swallowing and saying, “Yes.”
“And why should we give it to you? How do we know you’re not just trying to show off to your friends?”
“I don’t have any friends here,” I said. “And I’m trying to save the Galaxswc.”
“Uh huh,” they replied.
“Please,” I said.
Please.
All of the sudden their faces changed. “A-alister? You’re with Alister?”
“Yeah . . . ?”
The leader threw the Gem at me. “Take it and j-just go.”
I picked up the Gem and unlocked the door, running out into the snow to my asteroid.
As the asteroid flew through space, I said, “Thank you, Alister.”
No worries.
I was about to speak again when I heard a peculiar clicking noise.
That’s the Sky King, hurry!
I urged the asteroid faster, hurtling toward the next planet. It crashed in the middle of a field. I looked around as I tried to hear any whispers. When I did, my heart fell. It was so far away.
I closed my eyes and wished to be closer. Suddenly I was standing before a throne. I looked up and saw the Gem embedded in the top. I climbed the throne and pulled out the Gem, closing my eyes and wishing myself back to my asteroid. As I pulled out the Structure and added the Gem to it, I admired it as it floated in mid-air, before putting it back in the bag, sending the asteroid back into space.
I crashed on the next planet and stumbled along, following the whispers down an overgrown trail. I climbed over fallen trees and dodged low-hanging branches. At the end of the trail I found a large stone with a smaller stone embedded in it. I studied it for a minute, a brown stone that had a stripe of gray across it. It resembled how I’d seen the planet, before I’d crashed. That had to be the Gem. I pried it out carefully, before sliding it into my bag and rushing back to my asteroid. I had no time to waste.
The asteroid crashed through a building again and I wiped my mouth. I had eaten the cat’s sandwich in space and it had been amazing. But even then, I was still exhausted.
“I don’t think I can do this,” I said.
I believe in you.
I sighed and continued forward, looking through the building for a Gem. I tripped over a piece of wood and fell, scraping my knee. Suddenly a memory struck me.
“Daddy, look at me!” I pedaled forward, my control of the bike wobbling back and forth. Suddenly I veered it sharply to the left, tipping it over and falling, scraping my knee in the process.
My dad ran over. “Frey, are you good?”
I stared at it for a second before hopping up again. “I’m okay!”
I smiled as I remembered my willpower. Standing up, I closed my eyes and listened. And there was a whisper. Well, not much of a whisper, it was practically screaming in my ear. I turned and grabbed the Gem lying on the table, before running back to the asteroid and heading into space.
The asteroid crashed in front of a train wreck. As I climbed into the train to follow the whispers I had found, I realized something. Could I teleport to the Gem? I closed my eyes and let the whispers take over me. Then I spun on my heel and . . . teleported. The Gem was lying on a table and I grabbed it, closing my eyes and teleporting back to the asteroid. As I clambered onto the asteroid, I smiled. I was so close to finishing! Then I would be able to free Alister, and save the Galaxswc! I started the asteroid and flew high into the sky.
“Alister, I’m almost done!”
You are! Hurry!
His voice in my head was softer and not as loud. He was fading.
I crashed on the last planet and immediately teleported to the Gem. It was very easy to grab, so I was ready to get in and out of the planet in no time. I teleported back to the asteroid and took out the Structure. Then, I added the final Gem.
“I did it,” I cried as the Heart of Writing glowed in the air above me. “I made the Heart of Writing!”
“Alister?”
He was quiet.
“Alister? Alister, where are you?” I shivered. Had he faded away completely? Was I too late?
The Heart flashed. And suddenly he was there. I ran toward him and hugged him as soon as he had materialized, the Heart of Writing beating inside of him. He hugged me back. “You did it, Freya. You saved the Galaxswc. And you saved me.”

The asteroid hurtled toward a red planet with a strange yellow musical note on it. The surface growing larger by the second, I realized the asteroid was going to crash straight through the roof of a building. I ducked just in time, covering my head with my arms. The ground shuddered and I looked up slowly. There was a hole in the ceiling of the building from the asteroid. I looked around and discovered that we’d crashed into a theater. There were props lying around onstage and sheets of lines were scattered around. Picking on up, I read;
