I think that they stopped making them in 2006(ish).
Yes, the last movie to come out on VHS was A History of Violence, in 2006.
Ah, I wonder what the FIRST one was.
Here's an answer

I had a Rugrats VHS from Blockbuster.
It was orange…
I miss Blockbuster.

I've never been there, but from what I have heard… IT SOUNDS LIKE IT WAS AWESOME! Why'd they even close it. I mean, it seemed to be doing really great, so what happened? (I might've actually known but just forgotten.)

Yeah they were pretty awesome. You'd walk in and you're instantly surrounded by movies in every genre. Instead of wading through an endless list of movie on netflix, you can just look in a different direction. Of course, the late fees were kind of annoying, but we didn't know anything better.

The probably got closed up because we want instant gratification more and more and netflix delivers.

BLOCKBUSTER WAS MY CHILDHOOD!!!!

Some people's childhoods were Pokemon, some Pixar Movies, but mine, was… BLOCKBUSTER. They were so awesome. You walked into a store that was completely blue and yellow. At least mine was. They had tons of awesome movies, and what I looked forward to most was the most huge collection of video games you could imagine. I also loved dropping off the rentals into the chute. I have the Bigs 2 and Beatles Rockband because we had a huge late fee and they just let us keep them. (With a huge payment of course) But I was happy.

I have this huge collection of Disney VHS's all stacked up in this drawer in my room.

I also have tapes of The Bourne Identity, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, and the original Star Wars trilogy.

I don't have any VHSs!

Although I do have some home videos (DVD) from 1999.

The worst part is that Netflix isn't even that good.
It buffers every ten minutes for me (although that may just be my problem)and there's not many shows I want to watch.
I would much prefer Blockbuster.

Yeah, there aren't a whole bunch of choices on Netflix. Though they do have some pretty good choices.

Mer has some pretty old VHS tapes. Some of them dating back to the 80's, I'd imagine.

Mer, who feels old.

I guess they have some more anime and foreign movies, but other than that it doesn't have much.

Ah, I see. But ya know, I just thought of this… Ya know what would be rarer than a VHS from 1976? A VHS from 2013!

Having a vast network of stores is extremely expensive. Each store also has staff. The two most expensive things in business are premises and staff - they're a constant drain on a company's finances.

In order to keep a store open it has to pay its costs and pay all the staff wages*. If people aren't renting as much as they used to then that simply becomes impossible to maintain. Think about it this way - how many films need to be rented every day to keep the store open? What happens when more and more stores just aren't hitting that number?

Then of course there were lots of problems and stupid decisions made about company strategy (various CEOs attempting, and failing catastrophically, at turning Blockbuster into a retail-focused company) and how to handle stock, online presence and stuff like that, but the basics still apply.

(*It's not quite that simple - a more successful store could help keep a less successful one afloat but it's not exactly a solid strategy!)

I had this VHS tape of VeggieTales: The Toy That Saved Christmas but my mom sold it. Also, I found a VeggieTales DVD disc on my bookshelf/open storage case with many shelves to put my 3DS on top of when it needs to charge and I really don't know if should ask my mom to sell it or keep it.

Oh, yeah, we have a ton of VHS tapes…

To tell you the truth, we have a bunch of old Christmas movies that we recorded on VHS in 1991 (if they count) but we do have a few others. For example, we have The Little Mermaid, Peter Pan, Peter Pan (the realtime acted (not animated) edition), The Nutcracker Prince, The Little Drummer Boy, Annabelle's Wish, The Snowman… Yeah, I lost track. You get the idea.

So if any of those were released earlier than 1991, there you go.
