July 2022 SWC Writing Megathread

1] Main informational article, scratch news: (822 words)

Across the board, there has been the widespread countenance of the latest update to Scratch, the studio update. Although to many newer scratchers, the update can be seen as one of high functionality and stability, to those Scratch veterans who invest precious moments in role-playing, scratch writing camp, manager chat and extensive studio comment threads, the newest update is nothing short of the discriminatory attitude to their beliefs and ideas.

The studio update can be comprised into the improvement of several areas; which includes the limitation of the number to managers a studio can be comprised upon, from infinite, to 40. As an owner of a large studio myself, of the name: “Accept the invite for no reason! :.D :{}”, with over 100 managers, it is clear of the impact of the update. More and more people began to exit the studio as a result of their inability to function in the studio, as only the “Studio Host” can change anything in the studio in regards to the icon and the description, two characteristics this was solely built upon. This has led to the destruction of studios, not only this one, but also studios built upon manager chat, regular moderation (such as the Studio Pranksters) and roles (such as Aesthetiscape). Therefore, this characteristic can be viewed as overall negative, but there are some positive impacts. This includes more security over the maintenance of the studio description, and the confidence that a description cannot be destroyed, and better moderation by the filterbot in conversing to other scratchers, by ridding the ability to share personal information through unmoderated chatter.

Another impact of the update was the limitation of comment threads in a studio, from infinite replies, to solely 25. This can be viewed as a huge negative by most, as this is possible on profile comments and project comments. However, this allows studio commenting to be more direct and concise, so the aims of collaboration can be met more quickly, rather than long winded. Alternatively, newer comment threads can be established upon previously created ones, which begs the question, why was this update brought to light in the first place?

Furthermore, the studio update has also brought upon a new GUI, to allow the ease of accessibility to different qualities of a studio. This includes the increase in fonts, and the studio thumbnail or icon, to bring an overarching positive look to these studios to encourage newer scratchers to begin to use the feature. This can therefore improve the appeal and popularity of studios to all scratchers across all ages. However, scratch veterans accustomed to the previous layout may feel a sense of disconnect or invalidation to their view of a perfect studio, overshadowed by the existing layout, so may feel the growing need to leave entirely, as the interface is no longer centred around their needs.

Let's now focus on the impact on a community of studios, otherwise known as the July 2021 session of SWC. This ran from the first of July 2021, to the 1st of August 2021, as a triannual event for any scratcher to write tirelessly towards their word goals, and compete with other scratchers. This session was especially difficult, as there suddenly was only a singular studio host, so there were delays in the updating of word counts, and relaying results of the day to participants. Furthermore, the role of co-leaders became greatly diminished, so this began the introduction of word count studios, where co-leaders could update segregated word counts, which the leader can add and relay to the campers, which effectively breaks most of the restrictions created by the update, allowing SWC to continue to run smoothly without error-prone events.

The last thing implemented by the update was the removal of the array of scratchers who follow an individual, so the individual would have to physically type each individual's name if they were willing to invite all their followers to a studio. This update can be easily seen as counter-productive, as previous advertisement of projects through studios would decrease, and become more time-consuming, yet this rids the opportunity of so called “ruining studios”, by the curators adding excess projects or ruining the layout of the studio descriptions to a studio, as more trusted people can be allowed to curate instead, and less people being invited can also lead to less studio activity notifications that individuals can receive, which can be successful in ridding excess spam in message notifications, granting more freedom to individuals who are consistently invited to useless studios.

Although this is short, this is only an excerpt of the character of the studio update. This is purely informative, not to suggest bias or removal. The lives of many scratchers still remain unaffected and personally, I am quite satisfied by the update, despite being a veteran, I find great opportunity from the update, and view it as an overall positive, although this can be easily argued against.

2] Main opinion article: (book review). (822 words)

Passerine, the most popular sleepy bois inc fanfiction in the minecraft youtube community, is potentially one of the best works that exist in fanfiction. With the second highest kudos rating, you wouldn't want to miss out on the heart-wrenching plotline, and unexpected twists that the plot of passerine can bring upon. This includes main character death, huge plot moments, hurt/comfort and critical angst, where the plot will be introduced here, so a reader can pick up the story if interested.

Passerine is a story which is centred around the character of Technoblade, as well as further containing other characters such as Tommyinnit, Wilbur Soot, Dream, Philza and Sapnap. Techno is a headstrong, intelligent member who is well renowned for his tactics in war, and his attitude to the survival of others, letting people face sacrifices in his name, in an attempt to strengthen his empire. He was initially solo, before working with a companion, the angel of death, Philza. This brought great benefits to Techno, as Philza was strategic, and very generous, as he was able to point any flaw in Techno's way of fighting instantly, and they were able to build on their strengths together, so we're the best of friends. This continued, until one day, Philza felt an eager urge for his own people, so to recover, to feel connected again, Philza left Technoblade. This can be shown as an act of familial inclination over-riding friendships and occupations, as family is the strongest unit, so therefore Passerine is ultimately extremely family oriented.

After Philza leaves Technoblade, he ventures to start a family of his own, so rebuilds the town he was once from (now lying in ruins) and helps the townsfolk to rebuilt what once was. He then finds the love of his life, and had two children, which were Crown Prince Wilbur and Prince Tommy, as Philza was King of the land he helped to restore. This is why Technoblade, after being so tripped by the voices in his head to his deadly inclination, decided to suppress the temptation and search for his friend, and found him King of this land. Techno is met with both princes, Wilbur at 15 and Tommy at 6, both living the happiest, indefinitely perfect lifestyle (or at least Tommy was, as Wilbur was so weak at the chokehold of his emotions). With both princes uneasy at the idea of a new guest, Philza enters the scene, comforting them, and then turning to face Technoblade. This event is one of the several confrontations which occur within passerine, which develop the relationships between each character greatly.

In this confrontation, Philza voices a clear concern about Wilbur to Technoblade, which was, by coincidence, the grasp of voices in Wilbur's head, allowing him to lose control of his consciousness and perform acts, or feelings he can't describe and would never utter. This worried Philza greatly, as he knew Technoblade suffered from the same condition, which led to his bloodthirsty attitude. Overwhelmingly conceived by emotions, Philza throws himself to the ground, and pleads that Techno help Wilbur train with weaponry, and that Techno help Wilbur control his voices, which Technoblade hastily agreed to. This was the start of a journey, the uniting of brotherly love, sacrifice, family and care, before it all ends, under Dream's strings. But will they save themselves before the voices take over? The alleviated question of the book itself.

This book is also under credibility of content creators. Popular animator Sad-ist had created a passerine animatic in the May of 2021,  which focused solely on the perspective of Wilbur and Technoblade, and in minority, Tommy. This attracted the attention of Mumza, the real life wife of Philza Minecraft, as well as Niki Nihachu, who both attempted a read of passerine after the newfound surge of popularity created by the animatic. Niki began several hours of Passerine reading streams as an accompaniment, which allowed individuals to connect with their favourite streamers, as well as the work of art passerine can be composed to be, which suggest how credible the claim that Passerine is the best work in the minecraft youtube fandom really is.

Fans have reacted positively to passerine as per its popularity for both 2021 and 2022 as well. Due to the surges of popularity, the author, Thcscus, had began a sequel to the hit fanfiction, which is named “Shrike”, which is Dream Team centric. This shows more into the backstory of the potential “Villians” of Passerine, but also focuses greatly on the impact of family and familial love, which, as aforementioned, is a key theme which continues throughout the entire work. Therefore, Passerine is a fanfiction which is entailed with a huge popularity and fanbase, which makes it so special as a read.

Passerine is a free, non-profit fanfiction for sbi, but a definite must read, which can be found on ao3.

3] Column : “What should I do to drink water more often?” - Yishujia (504 words)

Drinking water is usually assumed to be an easy asset to wellbeing in everyday life, and is something (that to most) can be seen as an easy expenditure with little to no thought behind it. However, in some cases, drinking water can almost be seen as tiring, and full of fatigue, which is why it is completely valid to ask for help in the regard.

One way to maximise the amount of water a person can drink is from the purchase of a time regulated water bottle, with regular time increments which specify times of day, and how much water must be drunk by this time. This allows individuals to built extensive, healthy habits around water consumption.

Another way in maximising water consumption is the quality of the water presented. It is a truth universally acknowledged that, the more easier a task is, the greater of an inclination a person has in order to compete the task, i.e. if both games and homework are two options for a task to complete, a person would almost certainly go for the games, as it is more of an easier feat to explore, rather than homework, which involves more effort. Similarly, if the quality of the water is better, or tastes better, there would be a greater inclination to that of a better taste, so a good habit to allow someone to drink more water would be the improvement of the flavour or quality of it, so that whenever water is drank in the future, it would be enjoyable, rather than a painful necessity.

Another method in maximising water consumption is other people! Personally, my mother helps out greatly with my water consumption. Since she works around the home, her children are her priority, so that when I return from school, she always gives me water and reminds me to hydrate, as this is in her routine to do. Therefore, the responsibility of drinking water is more on my mother than myself, as I am consistently reminded to do so. This also helps strengthen my relationship with my mother, as I see her at consistent intervals, so I know the times where she is available to talk, if I need someone to vent to, or similar to this.

The last method I can comprehend would be increasing the amount of water your water bottle contains, and setting a goal to finish the contents of the water bottle every single day. This can help build competition with yourself, but can also help your competitive attitude to be stronger with others, as competition can be something you can become accustomed to as a trait. Furthermore, your water drinking habits can be reinforced as more water can be consumed every waking day, and you can learn hydration and learning to be more content with different things in your life.

Therefore, these were 4 tips to help increase water consumption, which should be able to help someone increase their inclination to a habit that can be greatly beneficial in their lives.

4] Other : Awards/Recognition. (207 words)

This is an award created for the elite, an esteemed commendation, which is presented to 1Harmony4. Harmony has been at the root of the control of scratch user Fari2, as she is consistently prone to idiocy and conflict, which 1Harmony4 gladly plays the motherly, caretaking role to prevent. Harmony is wonderful, if a user has any sort of heinous trouble which partakes in their way, Harmony is the suited individual for the job. She is kind, considerate, funny and loving, which makes Fari2 feel so valued whenever she discusses any trepidation with her. Therefore, Harmony has been awarded this award for being the best friend Fari2 could ask for, and for being so sweet and so unbelievably clingy, so all Fari2 wants is a thank you, to Divine Authority, for making the relationship between the two possible.

Some of my favorite fandoms are marvel, pjo, and koltc. I mostly enjoy writing real-fic and a bit of fantasy but I prefer reading more sci-fi and mystery. I'm looking forward to being able to see what happens this session with all of you. (also mystery is superior and will beat everyone)

Cabin Wars Writing

Boom! The workers were back. The basement of our house had started renovation last week, after fully taking out the walls the construction workers had begun hammering, loudly. My head felt like a million bees were living in my head every time they came over. I had been sitting at my desk, twirling my pencil in my hand as I stared at the numbers and variables of my math homework. I had heard the door creak open but didn’t think much of it until I heard feet pounding on the stairs. My heart sank as all hope of going to Rowan’s house this afternoon disappeared. Mom was at work and told me whenever someone else was at the house she wanted me to stay there, to make sure they didn’t steal or something.
I stuffed my half-finished homework into my backpack and just as I was about to zip it up I saw something. A corner of cream-colored paper was folded into fourths and sat tightly in my binder. I pulled it out, examining the creased beige note. Unfolding it carefully I fell back into my chair and read the words I miss you.

“Rowan!” Was the first thing I said when I heard the click of the phone showing that Rowan had joined. “Why’d you put that in my binder?” I exclaimed, who else could have done it, but I miss you? Why would they write that? “What?” Rowan asked oblivious to my confusion “The note! Rowan, what does that even supposed to mean?” Rowan was silent for a few seconds before answering “Avery, I have literally no idea what you're talking about.” I sighed, they said it so seriously I knew they couldn’t have been lying. “Oh, alright, sorry for bothering you, I’ll see you at school tomorrow,” I said and left the call.
Mom came around eight tonight, she had brought a pizza from the store next door and sat down at the table with me. “You’ll never believe who I got a call from today.” She said, breaking the silence after taking the first bite of her pizza. “Who?” I looked up from my plate curiously. “Kara.” I dropped my pizza in surprise. “Really?” I asked excitedly. Mom smiled widely, “She said she wanted to visit us, she told me she missed us.” I froze, I miss you, but that’s impossible, Kara was halfway across the country and the last time I saw Kara was two years ago when she left for college. We ate the rest of dinner silently but I could barely keep my excitement in as I thought longingly to see my sister again.

Rowan showed up at my locker a few minutes before the first period bell. “What was that call last night?” Rowan asked, confused, as I pulled my biology book out of my locker. “Nothing,” I mumbled, blushing “I was just confused that’s it.” Rowan shook their head slightly before following me to biology. I had met Rowan when I was in fourth grade, Kara had taken me to an LGBTQ+ support meeting for kids and teens she was going to with her girlfriend and decided to take me along. It was mostly kids around eight to sixteen there but me and Rowan were the only nine-year-olds there. I remember how we had gone in a circle and said our names, our pronouns, and gender identity. Rowan had said that they were nonbinary and used they/them pronouns. That was the first time I had heard those words and I remember asking Kara loudly afterward. She had told me off and said not to be rude, but I wasn’t trying to be rude I just wanted to know what it meant. Later when everyone separated into their own groups and began talking to their friends I went to see Rowan who had come alone and at first had been standing in the corner of the room by themself awkwardly. We began to talk, I had never seen them at school before and they told me they went to private school. Back then I had never met anyone who had gone to a private school before and was astounded by how normal they seemed. On TV shows the private schools were always for people who were smarter than everyone else and would always brag. But Rowan wasn’t like that. They were nice and friendly and were always there for me.

I opened to the fiftieth page of my book as I slipped into my seat. It was in the back left row, perfect so I’d never get called on. I flipped a few pages forward and then there it was, the crumpled beige paper folded, but I had thrown the other one aways so what was this-
Where are you? I let out a silent gasp as I read the black, slanted words that sat in the middle of the paper. It felt like hundreds of dull needles pressed against my body until finally the bell rang and Mr. Banis stood up in front of the class.

Kara was going to get to the airport at nine in the evening today, mom had been softly shaking for the past hour, she had been rubbing her hands and her knee had been jiggling up and down. The drive to the airport was tense, it seemed we were both too nervous to say anything. The flood of cars swam out of the parking lot as another wave fought to try and get in. After about twenty minutes of horns blowing, mom screaming at cars, and cars swerving to save themselves we finally slipped into a little spot in the parking lot.
As I stood up a little piece fell to the ground, as it fell it landed on the right side with the words, I want to see you again I gasped, at first I tried not to think much of it but now the notes are getting creepy and I feel like something might actually happen. Mom knocked on the window getting my attention and her patience running this, I grabbed the note and shoved it into my coat pocket.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________
What I remember the most of that day was that it was wet, and I mean buckets of pouring rain, trees getting ripped out wet. It was the middle of April in Maine, school had just started when the intercom turned on. “Attention all, teachers, students, and staff, this is not a drill, due to severe weather concerns the school is going under lockdown, please proceed to your assigned rooms.” That was the first day ever, probably in the history of the whole school, when neither the principal nor vice-principal were present. Obviously everyone began panicking, they were trying to look out the windows which poor Mr. Branick was trying to close. I wish I could say I was acting safe and immediately followed the directions, sadly instead I was trying to contact my sister while at the same time trying to look out the window. My sister, Jessie, also went to the same school but all her classes back then were downstairs, unlike me who had to climb three flights of stairs each day just to get to first period. She was two years younger than me but looked like she could just as well pass as my identical twin. We both had the same frizzy auburn orange hair, pale skin, some brown freckles sprinkled along our cheeks and nose, and gray-ish and green eyes. Finally, after Mr. Branick yelled for the first time ever this year everybody lined up and walked down to the first floor.
We were there for more than three hours, we had to sit on our knees covering our heads with our hands and also try not to pass out from the smell of the person next to me who had forgotten to put on deodorant that morning. Now maybe you’ve never been in this situation before but I’m sure you can imagine how it feels when around fifty eighth graders are having to stay together in one room for three-stinking hours. Finally, after hours of muffled giggles, teachers scolding us to keep our heads down, the intercom clicked on again and the voice of the schools secretary announced “All students are to go back to their classrooms and continue with their day, teachers please check your emails for any new and/or announcements.”

The fog hung right above the ground leaving a white light hanging through the neighborhood. The sun was obstructed by the dark gray clouds making the early morning dark and gloomy. Dew sat on the dry, yellow grass as bugs began to come out into the wet, warm air.
The storm roared as loudly as church bells that echo throughout the small town. Trees whipped around like the inflatable tube men that stood in front of all the car shops.

“So will you come?” Willow asked Luz as they stood outside Hexside School of Magic and Demonics. Willow had invited Luz to her birthday party, Willow had decided to only invite Luz and Gus as she still wasn’t sure about Amity, but Luz was still very excited to attend her party tomorrow at five. “Of course, I’m coming! I’d never miss your party!” Luz paused before continuing. “But Willow, have you maybe reconsidered about not inviting Amity? I mean I thought you guys had gotten closer, now that me Amity are… you know.” Willow sighed, “Luz, I know that you and Amity are close now, but I still worry sometimes that she might suddenly change again, and anyway I want the three of us to have a special night, just us. Luz nodded slowly as she began to head toward the Owl House.

Luz sat in their room playing with glyphs when Hooty decided to scream in her ear. “LUUUZZ! AMITY IS HERE!”
“AAH! Hooty! You can’t just do that to people.” Luz jumped up and brushed her clothes off before sprinting down the stair toward the front door. Luz swung the door open revealing Amity standing in front of it holding a card.
Amity blushed before handing the card to Luz and saying, “My parents are forcing me to go to a party, some sort of work party, conference. It’s going to be really boring and I totally understand if you don’t want to come because I don’t want to come but if you do then-” Amity began to ramble but Luz interrupted her. “Sure! I’d love to come!” Amity stood there flustered “Oh, well thank you, there’s more information on the card, I’ll, I’ll see you there.” As Amity left Luz opened the card and saw, “Tomorrow at five, my house”

Eda and King sat on the couch as Luz paced around the living room of the Owl House. “I mean I have known Willow better longer, and I’m one of the two people she invited so if I don’t go then it’ll just be her and Gus, and well… But Amity and I are now, well, together and if I don’t go she’ll be bored and I don’t want her to be bored by herself. Maybe if I find some spell that can make me go fast then I’ll be able to go to both and-” Eda finally interrupted her, “Look, kid, it’s just one night, if you just tell one of them you’re busy I’m sure they won’t be too offended.” Luz sighed loudly before sinking down to the floor and lying down. “But then they’ll know that I chose one of them over the other.”

Part 2
Son of Neptune | Heroes of Olympus
Hazel and Frank

Hazel Character Voice

Hazel is very strong-willed and very caring about all her friends. She always makes sure everyone who she cares about is safe and tries very hard to protect them. Being born in the 1930s Hazel can be flustered by some romantic gestures and people cursing. As the “youngest” demigod of the 7 Hazel is often overlooked as weak but when pushed is extremely powerful and could take down almost anyone she wants. Hazel has also been through a lot from a young age, including herself dying and being brought back to life. At Camp Jupiter, she was a part of a disgraced Cohort, and being a child of Pluto she was bullied and told she was weak. Now with people who actually care about her and believe in her Hazel is a very powerful demigod.

Frank Character Voice

Frank has been described as a “koala bear with muscles” by Hazel and “a baby sumo wrestler” by Leo. Frank never wants to be on anyone's bad side but always puts himself down always thinking he’s not good enough. When he was young his mother died in the war leaving him with his grandmother who always thought he wasn’t good enough to be his mother's son. When he was born his life was tied to a stick so if the stick burns he burns. He’s had a crush on Hazel basically since he came to Camp Jupiter and she was the first person he trusted enough to share his secret about his life.

Hazel’s Perspective
(I hate what I wrote)
Of course, we got the entrance protection shift again, we had already stood there for two hours and as usual, barely anything except for a few birds interrupted us. This shift is probably the least favorite shift amongst Camp Jupiter, all the cohorts hate so they collectively decide to always throw the fifth cohort at it. Whenever I do it I almost always get along with Frank except for one time when I got paired with Dakota “the Koolaid vampire” I don’t really know what I think about Frank, he’s kind of like a big soft bear that has tough skin. It was quite obvious that he had a crush on me and I suppose I kind of felt the same. I mean at least he’s different from literally everyone else at Camp Jupiter and doesn’t treat me like I’m some clueless pet left on the street for them. They had been silent for at least half an hour both lost in their thoughts until I broke the silence, “Would be nice if they at least gave us a fire,” I said with a breathy laugh, rubbing my hands on my shoulders. “Yeah, fire, Hazel I need to tell yo-” Frank began to say until he was interrupted by a noise in front of them. A boy probably around fifteen-sixteen appeared in front of them carrying an old lady on his back? He ran fast despite carrying someone who was very probably heavier than him, Frank and I stood there frozen, for a minute until we saw something else cross the horizon, Gorgons. My heart stopped, I paused for only a second before turning to Frank who had begun to ready his bow aiming for the Gorgan. “Wait! Don’t shoot!” The boy yelled raising his hands, did he think we were shooting at him?

Frank’s Perspective

Gods, she’s beautiful I looked over at Hazel, she was standing on the opposite side of the entrance, she was wearing full armor and her curly hair was pushed into a cavalry helmet but I could still clearly see her golden eyes looking over the highway. I know most people despise front protection shift but I’m fine with it, the worst part of it is probably that I was always do it with Hazel, now don’t get me wrong I love- wait not love, I like- uh I just, I think she’s a cool person, but it also means that I have to stand there for hours wanting to tell her my secret and yet never getting the nerve to do so. “Would be nice if they at least have us a fire,” Hazel finally said breaking the silence. Suddenly I felt the pocket holding the piece of wood that held control of my life feel like it was set ablaze, I gasped, my arm flug to my pocket but when it reached the piece of firewood I felt nothing, it was normal not even warm. “Umm… so, yeah, fire, Hazel I need to tell you so-” Screams sounded from across the highway, both Hazel and I paused confused at the scene happening in front of us. Behind the highway stood a boy wearing a worn down ripped orange shirt, he looked back at the two GORGONS behind him, that wasn’t even the strangest thing, on top of the boys back was an old hippie lady, what was happening? I was the first to unfreeze, pulling an arrow from my back I readied it and pulled the string back aiming above the boy’s head at the gorgons. “Wait! Don’t shoot!” The boy yelled raising his arms, but I wasn’t aiming for him.

Part 3

Backstory fic
Alternate Universe (AU) fic
Established Relationship

In this fanfiction about The Owl House Luz, Amity, Willow, and Gus are transported to the mortal world, Luz is excited but knows it’ll only be for a short time. Worried about what her mom would think if she showed up for a bit and then disappeared again Luz decided to instead show her friends around town.

The sun blinded Luz as she stumbled, falling on her back, Amity soon came after her followed by Willow and Gus. Amity fell onto Luz her face landing less than a foot away from Luz’s face. They both blush before Amity stands up and reaches out a hand to help Luz up. Willow and Gus struggle before standing up and joining Luz and Amity on top of the hill they had fallen onto overviewing a small town.
“Where are we?” Willow asked finally her breath as she eyed the billboard in front of them promoting the new iPhone. Luz paused before answering.
“Home”

All three of Luz’s friends stared at her in shock, “Well my home, I’m not entirely sure how we got here but I think it must have been because of Emperor Belos.” Luz explained slowly. Gus started to squeal, “You mean we’re in the mortal world?!? The creator of french fries!? The new home of the giraffes?!” He began to jump around trying to eat up everything he could possibly see. He continued to talk about all the things he wants to try and eat and see. Amity pulled Luz to the side and asked, “Luz, why did Belos transport us here? I mean isn’t he trying to figure out a way to the mortal world, if he’s able to get us here then why didn’t he just come here himself? What does he want us to do? What does he want from you?” Amity grabbed Luz’s hand nervously waiting impatiently for answers. Luz pursed her lips, They wondered what Eda was probably thinking now that Luz was gone, did she think Belos kidnapped them? Or maybe she hadn’t noticed yet. “I wish I knew. I remember Belos saying how `I’ll be the key to his success` I really don’t know, but we won’t figure anything out on this hill.” Luz turned to Gus who was telling Willow about everything that he had read about hamburgers and how much he wanted to try one. “Well, what do you think? How about I give you a tour of my home.” Luz announced as they headed down the grassy hill.

Oh gosh, what will Mami think if she sees me? Again? She already lost me twice, what will she think if she finds me and loses me a third time? They reached the town square, it was busier than most times Luz came here but she was still able to show all her friends where they had lived for the past fourteen years. “-And there’s the library, there’s the hotdog stand, Gus we can get you one later if you want, and… there’s th- the cemetery, uhh and there we have the bench, yep, the very special bench.” Luz paused losing some of her excitement, while trying to show the town Luz’s eyes had fallen to see their father’s grave. Amity looked at her in a worried way, she put her hand on Luz’s shoulder, “Luz, are you okay? Do you want to talk?” Luz looked at her then Willow then Gus who was only half paying attention as he eyed the pigeons sitting on the street. Willow kicked him and he came back to the conversation. They all sat down looking at Luz as she looked down staring at the grass. Slowly she began to talk, “I was just thinking, I finally got home again and I’m actively trying to avoid mami and she’s all alone without me or my dad. Does that make me selfish?” They were all silent for a second until Willow piped up, “No, you’re not selfish if not you are probably the most selfless person I’ve ever met, human or witch.” Luz looked up falling into Willow’s arms as she reached them out to hug her. Amity nodded, “Luz,” she paused and sighed before continuing, “You’re not selfish to avoid your mom to protect her life, I know how much you want to see her and I know that you’re scared Belos might hurt her because of you, that’s the opposite of selfish.” Gus nodded, “Yeah! You’re just trying to protect your family! Luz, you’re awesome!” They all hugged Luz before Luz stood up and finished showing them the place she grew up.

Part 4

Thank You @Dawn_Camps / @Spire- / @23BraveHeart / @TWILIGHT_A for giving me permission to put them in my fanfiction.

The sun rose over the mystery cabin’s tall forest as the bell sounded through SWC waking everyone up. The mystery cabin woke up slowly, tired but still excited to see the new activities and enjoy camp with the rest of the campers. Mystery was one of the cabins that were mostly filled with night owls, most of them awake at midnight waiting impatiently for the new daily to come. But slowly with groans the Mystery cabin woke up and headed over to the main cabin. Campers from all sides walked over as a group all their leaders and co-leaders in the front of each cabin. In the middle of camp a large building stood a large sign hung from it, “Main Cabin Hall”
One cabin at a time all fifteen cabins swam in each camper taking a seat at a table. I didn’t really know anyone so I went and sat down at the first table I saw. After a minute or two someone joined me. She had dark brown hair, nearly black with red highlight, her hair fell right past her elbows. She looked at me smiling, “I’m Dawn,” Her eyes darted up from the table to me, back and forth. “Hey, I’m Sage. Nice to meet you!” I smiled, at least now I wasn’t completely alone. Dawn opened her mouth put was interrupted by the announcement of mango muffins for breakfast. After a few minutes of hassle as all the campers came up to get breakfast, Dawn and I sat back down at the table but were soon joined by two other people. “Hi! I’m Twi!” Said the girl with glasses and black hair, “This is Sparrow,” Twi said nodding her head at the other girl standing next to her. Sparrow waved and they both sat down across me and Dawn.

“-and that is why passion fruit juice is the best juice flavor!” Sparrow finished saying as she finished the last sips of her juice. Twi, Dawn and I laughed at how passionate Sparrow seemed about the topic. “So then why is the most full one at the breakfast table?” Twi joked lightheartly. Sparrow rolled her eyes at her, “Anyways… Any other topics you want my opinion on?” Sparrow smiled but before she could say anything else Twi interrupted her, “Just whatever you do, do not, do not mention anime around her.” Twi laughed and Sparrow joined her. Suddenly someone else appeared carrying a tray of food, “Hey, I’m Brave, do you mind if I sit here?” All three of us nodded and I moved over to give her room to sit. “So, is the food here mangoes often?” Brave asked and all four of them burst into laughter.

Sunday 8:07 PM Log

Detectives found the SWC storage shed completely ransacked, and the holder of all hundreds of mangoes had been broken into. The group of detectives mostly made of Mystery campers have not found any evidence yet. All campers are in pure shock at the theft of the main idea of SWC. Here’s a note from the lead detective:

It’s only the first day and we haven’t found anything yet, we have an idea of a few suspects but nothing is too clear yet, we have found a few witnesses who are currently being interviewed but again nothing is for sure yet. As soon as we find out more information we will let you know.

Weekly #2 Newspapper

Part 1: Main Informational Article (800 words)
Politics — Make up some political figureheads to write a fake article about.
This Friday politicians, Ms. Jannet newsburey and Mr. Jonas stevens are set to run against each other in a heated debate all about the laws of their state around the school week, both attempting to sway their town's opinions in hope of gaining votes, and support. Both of them are running for the state seat of Newburg in the coming Election, neither seem to have completely gained the support of newburangs as it has been a swing seat for over 20 years. This week's debate will be centered around the disputes around the layout of the school week. Ms. Newsburey has made it very clear through previous interviews that her wishes lie with the 4-day school week, Whilst Mr. Stevens obviously opposes her views and wants to stick with the old ways, speaking about it quite often.

Images of her speech for the upcoming event have recently been leaked, bringing both herself and her counterpart into the public spotlight. Going off what has been released she will focus on the key benefits of the four-day program throughout the debate which seems as though it will be an ineffective method against Jonas, who has been in the seat for the last 2 terms. What people are really interested in is who leaked the confidential information and how they did it, an investigation is currently being run to aid the situation which is worrisome for many of Ms. Newsbureys party members. She has publicly announced her disappointment in the person responsible and warned others to be more vigilant and less careless.

As seen in the leaked images she talks about how the four day school week model creates better educational outcomes for students and benefits the school in the long run, she speaks of the system in great detail explaining how it is more cost-efficient to work with as opposed to the 5 day school week. She uses the phrase “Cheaper is better” multiple times to aid her in her presentation. Going off her information this layout would lower the cost of school fees a little and help the millions of struggling families out there.

She also shows us other ways it benefits schools showing statistics that suggest that the 4-week style improves students' results and grades. She speaks of opportunities for schools to work with teachers and employees and references studies that prove the heightened student attendance rates affiliated with the four days. She follows this by showing just how many teachers are attracted to schools with this learning style because of its convenience.

After seeing the leaked speech Jonas proceeds to retaliate with claims stating that
parents, staff, and students dislike the four day school week. However, Jannet has simply destroyed this claim using a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation study (completed by a team of researchers( which proves this belief wrong. It shows us that given the choice an outstanding 69% of parents and 85% of students who took part in the study state that they prefer the design and model of the 4-day week as it benefits them. After all, students in the four-day school week were proven to have spent more time on school, sports, and chores compared to those in the 5 day week. For teachers, the break that the 4 day week provides could become a vital tool. It would give them a day to mark our work and plan our lessons. We’ve already seen how crucial the break is for students and unsurprisingly, a little personal time has all the same benefits for teachers. And with almost 60% of teachers experiencing high stress in their jobs, it is easy to see how the break would benefit their mental health. So really who wouldn’t prefer the 4 day school week?

This retaliation seems to indicate that Stevens was not directly behind the leakage, it seems unlikely that it was simple carelessness or an accident and the question remains around who is guilty. Currently, no formal accusations or information on the case has been released, leading us to believe that the person behind this vicious attack has not been found out or charged. The debate, however, will still go ahead as planned. However, both politicians have been urged to change their arguments. It is spectated that Jeneine has already done this to prevent the opposition from planning their speech around her leaked arguments, which would allow them to more easily counter her information. but it is not expected of Jonas to change his. Because of this poor behavior and bad sportsmanship his approval rates seem to have dropped slightly, which might just give Jenine the upper hand in the debate and possibly even the election
For now, it seems that the man stuck in his old ways will either have to adapt to these new and surprising circumstances or handle his own downfall.

Part 2: Main Opinion Article (800 words)
Music review — About a piece of music and possibly the meaning behind it, information about the artist
Song chosen: elenoor Rigby by the beatles

Eleanor Rigby was a song released as a paired single along with “yellow submarine” by The Beatles on the 5th August 1966, The Beatles were an English rock band regarded as one of the most influential of all time and were formed in Liverpool, England 1960 by John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, and George Harrison. Between 1962 and 1970 (the year they disbanded) they released over 200 songs and sold hundreds of millions of albums and earned a multitude of awards including, brits, Grammys, and an Oscar. There are a few theories relating to how the Beatles created their name but a widely accepted story is that they were inspired by the bug-themed name of “Buddy Holly’s Crickets” and chose the word Beetle but soon decided to veer away from the original spelling fit the word Beat into their name as a symbol of their musical affiliation and in turn creating their renowned name.

The Vocals in Eleanor Rigby are accompanied by a classical string ensemble, consisting of Violins, Violas, and Cellos. The main role of the strings is to accompany the vocals with melodic phrases as well as keep the beat for large portions of the song. On the other hand, the vocals perform the melody of the song. The song begins with strong vocals, the strings immediately join in with a melody that continues for the duration of the intro. As the first verse commences the vocals take the center stage and the strings play on beat. Throughout the song, the vocals continue their strong melody which at times softens and fades to give way to the strings who often play short ascending phases and fast-paced accompaniments.
I believe that the lyrics to Eleanor Rigby fit into the Narrative category. Eleanor Rigby is a fictional character, who throughout the song has points in her life told to us in chronological order to create a story. The song also tells the story of father Mackenzie and I believe this is what makes the song fit into the Narrative category. However, there are also components of the attitudinal category that shine through because it talks about the issue of loneliness but overall I think the song fits better under the narrative category.

Eleanor Rigby best fits into the Baroque pop or Baroque Rock genre. Baroque pop is a fusion genre that combines rock and elements of classical music. It emerged during the mid ’60s and became a relatively well-used genre by artists at the time. String ensembles are one of a few instruments common in this genre. Eleanor Rigby which was released in 1966 fits into this category quite well. Aside from being released during a period when this style of music was fairly common It fits the requirements for the genre. Its use of a classical string ensemble, catchy melody, strong rhythm, repeated chorus, and incorporation of classical and late baroque style is what makes it really fit into the genre. It has a running time Eleanor Rigby has a total running time of 2 minutes and 6 seconds and a time signature of 4/4 which means it has four beats in each bar, it is played at 136 bpm (beats per minute) meaning it fits into the allegro category (meaning fast, quickly and bright). The tempo is regular and throughout sections of the song, the beats are distinguished by string instruments.

The structure of this Song consists of an Intro, Verse 1, Chorus, Verse 2, Chorus, Bridge, Verse 3, and an Outro.
The Intro immediately introduces us to the theme of the song, loneliness.
Verse 1 then introduces Eleanor Rigby to us, giving us a snapshot of her life and hinting at her loneliness. Verse 2 introduces us to Father McKenzie and continues to push the idea of the sad lives that these ‘lonely’ people lead. In the 3rd and final verse which involves the death of Eleanor Rigby the line “no one was saved” is sung and I believe it symbolizes the fact that both were too caught up in their own lives to help the other and ‘save’ each other from their loneliness
Chorus’ both being identical, questions loneliness and provokes us to wonder about the lonely people in our world.
The Bridge reinstates the theme of loneliness and the Outro once again leads us to question loneliness before bringing the song and the story to a close.

I feel that this song is mainly centered around loneliness, gravitating to this theme throughout the lyrics. This message is presented throughout the song regularly and is shown first is the intro when the line “Ah, look at all the lonely people!” is sung twice. The lines “All the lonely people Where do they all come from? All the lonely people Where do they all belong?” are sung during the chorus and outro and I think that the rhetorical questions used are there to encourage the listener to think about the message. Aside from in the most obvious places the message is less obviously hinted at throughout the song as it is generally telling the story of two lonely people who are obviously in deep need of companionship.

Part 3: Column (500 words)
Weather — Natural disasters (Cycllones)

A tropical cyclone (also known as a hurricane or typhoon) is a powerful and destructive Rotating storm that forms over warm waters. Tropical Cyclones bring wind and rain. They will often cause flash flooding, severe wind damage, structural damage, power outages, as well as lightning, and deadly airborne debris. The winds in these storms can exceed speeds of 279km an hour and generally cost governments millions, if not billions of dollars.

Tropical cyclones are caused when the sun causes water on the ocean’s surface to heat up, creating an area of low pressure where warm moist air will rise from the ocean. Following that, the air in the surrounding area is sucked into the low-pressure zone and when these winds combine with forces made by the earth rotating a spinning storm is created.

To create a cyclone there are also a few other conditions required. The ocean's surface must sit at a temperature of at least 27°c. There must be low wind as high wind sheer usually prevents a storm from maintaining itself for long periods of time and because a storm can not be classified as a tropical cyclone until it has lasted for a prolonged duration, high wind shears are needed to sustain this. A Tropical Cyclone is also required to form at least 5° latitude away from the equator, this is because of the levels of CoriolisBroome force.

Cyclones are classified as an atmospheric hazard which is, to put it simply a natural disaster that begins or has to do with air and the atmosphere. Tropical cyclones are atmospheric hazards because they are caused by low atmospheric pressure, winds of high speed and moist air. The wind speed in a cyclone is measured by an anemometer (see image below) whilst the severity of a these eavaging storms is listed in categories raining from one (the weakest) to 5 (the strongest).

Even though Australia only makes up for 16% of the world’s cyclones and has an average of 13 cyclones a year, these natural dissters are infact Australia's most common. in an average Australian cyclone season our greatest risk or hazard for cyclones generally occurs in northwestern Australia in an area between broome and Exmouth and in northeast Queensland around port Douglas and Maryborough. But in general, cyclones occur along the north, northeast and northwest coast. Globally Tese devastating natural phenomenon ar seen most commonly throughput various tropical areas, and have especially high occurrence levels in the pacific ocean.

In Australia, the official cyclone season goes from the first of November to the 30th of April but cyclones prominently occur between December and April. However, If there is an El-Nino event tropical cyclones are much less likely to occur, in fact cyclones are half as likely to occur in Queensland in an El-Nino year, the opposite is true during a la Nina year where cyclones are over 3 times more likely to hit Queensland than in an el-Nino event.

Some Environmental Impacts of cyclones can include:
-uprooted trees
-the eruption and leaking of sewerage causing water to become contaminated and making it undrinkable for animals
-loss of habitat to animals
-Death or injury of animals

Social impacts of cyclones can include:
-Death
-minor injuries
-serious and/or permanent injury to multiple people
-homeless and the destruction of homes -loss of crops, plantations and gardens -Making areas challenging to access/destroying travel routs

“Well, let me tell you about the time I met your mother.” James leaned back in his armchair.
“That day was one of the best days of my life. It was just a typical day for me…” His eyes grew distant as he remembered.
“I had been young and foolish then. I was supposed to be studying royal etiquette.”
“Wait, royal?” One of his children interrupted.
“Yes, royal. You're of royal descent.” He smiled at them.
“Now, as I was saying. Instead of doing my studies, I snuck off to investigate some rumours going around. Rumours that my cousin, who we had thought dead, was alive and being held captive by an evil man.”
His children gasped in unison.
“Yes. I went to investigate and found her. But she wasn't alone. Her two best friends had also come to help her. And one was your mother.”
One of the children squealed.
“I fell for her instantly. She was beautiful, intelligent, athletic. Perfect.”
“I wasn't perfect!” His wife yelled from the kitchen.
“Well, almost perfect then. I thought my cousin's other best friend was your mother's boyfriend at first.”
“Was he?” One of the kids said with wide-eyed curiosity.
“No, he most definitely was not!” James's wife yelled again.
“No, thankfully. He was-”
“Like a brother to me.” His wife came out of the kitchen and stood behind his chair. “You know him as Uncle Peter.”
“Uncle Peter!?”
“Yep, that's right.” James grinned. “And his wife is my cousin. I think I got the better woman though.” He squeezed his wife's hand and gazed up at her.
“I'll tell Lila you said that.” His wife smirked.
“As I was saying, I instantly fell in love with her. Though unfortunately, I didn't have time to dwell on her beauty. We had to get my cousin out of there. She wasn't safe from the evil man yet. So I tucked my feelings away and we focused on getting back to my house.” James finished his story.
“Wow.”
“What happened next?”
“Well, we spent a lot of time with each other over the next few years and eventually grew to love each other.”

357 words

Everything changed that night. I had known it was going to happen, had yearned for it with all my soul, but there was always that needling doubt that maybe I would have to choose a different path. People don’t often think about what might have been if things hadn’t gone right. I certainly never did.

Not until now, at least. Perhaps my life would have been better. It would be more boring, certainly, but maybe I would have been happy anyway. Nevertheless, I wouldn’t trade the path that I ended up on for any other. They say that it’s the journey that matters, not the way it ends.

And of all the parts of my journey, this was the most important moment. This was the day that I could finally shove away my worry and fear and start to live the life of my dreams. I’ll admit, the road was tougher than I expected, and, at many moments, I doubted my ability to move forward.

But whenever I was at my lowest, I thought back to the hope and joy that I had felt at that moment. Even though I was young and naïve back then, the faith that I had placed in myself and others drove me ahead.

And now, thinking back, I can still remember every single detail: from when I was in the crowd of Aspirants, to when the magic swirled around me in a fiery glow, to the moment I was summoned to the center of the platform and was told by the Masters that I had been accepted.

I could see my whole future in that instant. My powers and skills would grow and blossom, and I would learn things that I never knew I could do before. I’d become a hero, respected by everyone around me. One day, not too far into the future, I’d be one of those Masters, gazing at a new batch of Apprentices and telling them that they would become everything they had dreamed of.

The experience only lasted about two and a half minutes. But I will carry it with me until the end of time.

Restaurant CRIME
A new restaurant has opened three days ago on May 17th and lots of food critics and people who live on the street crowded at the entrance waiting for the chef to change the sign into open. Online, the website said that they were going to make something exciting and delicious. This news had spread across the whole city. It was 6:00 a.m and the restaurant was supposed to open at 6:30. The restaurant looked fancy and you couldn’t even see the top. It was gold and shimmery, with one deck on each floor for outdoor dining, on the second floor, there was a big sign the hasn’t been revealed yet. If you had a good eye you could see how fancy the restaurant was. The tables were golden and the cuttery looked as if it was for kings and queens. At 6:25 police sirens started to sound and 25 police cars pulled and 50 police men came from the cars. They all wore dark sunglasses and their police outfits with badges. They were all holding taser guns, ready to electrocute anyone who commit violence. They blocked all the peoples path, until… After 5 minutes of waiting, a man wearing white opened the door and hung an open sign. All the lights shined and the doors opened, welcoming everyone. The waitresses who wore dresses like servants in an actual palace greeted every single person with a “hello”, “How is your day”, or “welcome”, just something like that. INN (International News Network) journalist Ryan Miller says. The restaurant name was revealed from five “kings” by clinging a sign onto the deck railings, Royal Court Restaurant, dine in like the king and queens that dine in their palaces. Crowds of people went in, flooding the restaurant.. Food critics have reported that there is 150 floors, at floor 150, you could see the whole city from up there. The food they have are food that “gods” eat. It actually really tastes that good, Sam Moore, the number one international food critic. As day went on, more and more people came to the city just for a meal. But as the second day passes, some customers got something suspicious about the staff there. Some of the staff kept on shaking wich led them to spilling water, coke or “magic water.” Others were whispering to each other something and their faces look anxious, some even looked anguish. INN (International News Network) has gotten lots of customers talking about that. The chef never appeared to anyone, even the other staff, Some staff said at the INN that they . Police said they would monitor all the floors and rooms every hour. The police said they found nothing unusual but the customers still were suspicious. Some people just left. Food critics said that they found some weird stuff in the food like small baby cats or hair brushes with hair. About in 3 hours INN has received 5 million comments about this place. People kept on leaving in big clumps. Each police would have 8 floors to monitor and they would have to call specialists to install cameras. Yesterday, about 500 people were injured and weary, they couldn’t remember anything that happened. Government Agency recommends that don’t dine there anymore. The hospitals were filled with people. There were even people on the stairs and hallways. Doctors say that most people were hit by something in the head and others say something in their stomach was causing the problem. When some people were awake from surgery they were surprised by their pockets, there money was gone, people sat upright and demanded the doctors where was their money. The doctors did not know anything about their money but the people said they had to be doing something to their money. The yelled at the doctors until the doctors had to give up 5,000 dollars from their money. This caused some doctors to quit and the hospital barely had anymore doctors. There was about 10,000 doctors but now, 3,000 doctors are still working. They worked tirelessly day to day. The president of Doctors says that they would not be that strict on applications to medical school, but they really need doctors and nurses badly. Police doesn’t know what is happening but Lyons Tee has some important footage to give to the Government Agency to view. If anyone has important info, tell the Government Agency. Their website is www.INN.gov/mainpage/.com (don’t click the link if it appears as a link). Again if you have anything about this crime contact INN and Government Agency www.agency.gov/restaurantcrime.com (don’t click the link if it appears as a link, it’s going to lead you to page not found most likely, unless a miracle happens.). Currently this crime will be like this for 2 more days, but as severity continues, the president himself will shut the restaurant down. All staff will be imprisoned for life and we want who started this immediately. We will be adding more police and cameras but remember, contact the government agency and INN if you have things that can help solve this crime. 866

Something Just Like This by Coldplay and the Chainsmokers
This collaboration may seem super unlikely of Coldplay the rock band and the Chainsmokers from what they do but this collab song is such a good song. I would totally recommend this. Now let us get an analysis of that song
Here’s verse one
I've been reading books of old
The legends and the myths
Achilles and his gold
Hercules and his gifts
Spiderman's control
And Batman with his fists
And clearly I don't see myself up on that list
This verse is about lots of myths such as Achilles, Hercules, Spiderman, and Batman. They all are superheroes and the narrator also wants to be a superhero, but he didn’t see himself as one. This verse is like an intro to whats next, something probably with superheroes and legends.
Here’s the pre-chorus
But she said, “Where'd you wanna go?
”How much you wanna risk?
“I'm not looking for somebody
”With some superhuman gifts
“Some superhero
”Some fairytale bliss
“Just something I can turn to
”Somebody I can kiss”
It’s like the author has this relationship with someone and they said that they didn’t want someone who is a super hero or a fairytale bliss. All she wants is someone she can turn to and love. She doesn’t want all that cool stuff, just something simple, that is all she wants. In real life this is also probably the same. Now lets go on
Chorus/Bridge
I want something just like this
Doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo

Oh, I want something just like this
Doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo

Oh, I want something just like this
I want something just like this
This is a bridge with a beat and the songs title (I want something just like this). Coldplay and the Chainsmokers makes I want something just like this to be ringing clear and powerful. Then lets see the next verse
I've been reading books of old
The legends and the myths
The testaments they told
The moon and its eclipse
And Superman unrolls
A suit before he lifts
But I'm not the kind of person that it fits
The author revisits the mighty gods and legends from verse at the start. But now he nows that he doesn’t fit. He isn’t like those superheroes. The legends and the myths, again the supernatural stuff, the testaments, the moon and it’s eclipse, like something rare is going to happen and Superman, one of the most powerfulest superhero, of course. But he isn’t like that.
Summary
So this is about someone in relationship with someone and is wanting to do all these mighty deeds for her so they could be together. But on the books for legends and myths, he doesn’t find himself in there. But she told him that she was not looking for those kinds of people that are superheroes and are mighty, (pre-chorus) all she wants is just someone to be beside her, someone she can kiss or miss. That is what she wants. That’s super simple, right? In real life most of the time, it is actually the same thing. They don’t want those mighty and powerful things but, infact, they just want them to be with them and someone they love by heart. As stated in the second verse, he realizes he isn’t those kinds of people who do mighty things. He doesn’t fit in as those superheroes.
Another meaning
On the cover, it shows a boy wearing superhero attire. And in the music video it is about that. I’m pretty sure al children would want to be super since they are young, and the younger you are, the more imagination you have. Children would also want to show how mighty and ambitious they are. The narrator would always want to be a superhero, but he reminds himself that superheroes are not real. The pre-chorus told him that he could be a superhero to her even if he isn’t a superhero for anyone else. The message is that you can be a superhero even if you don’t do mighty deeds or appear in legends and myths.
Opinion
I think this song is sweet and simple. It really didn’t use that complex of words and sounded beautiful. This is absolutely a good song for anyone who’s looking for songs with deep messages.
Info about the Artists
Something just like this is a collab song between Coldplay and the Chainsmokers.

Tornado hits Mississippi
Breaking News! Breaking News!
Alerts have been sent to all of Mississippi! The weather team has seen a funnel cloud and the radar has recorded how big it is! Currently the radar predicts a 300 miles per hour wind speed once it reaches ground. Let’s cross our fingers that this won’t be deadly. Here’s some advice for everyone in Mississippi. For all people driving on the roads, immediately stop and seek shelter as low as you can. Try to stay from the window and hide under a chair or table. The tornado is currently starting to pick speed and is now number four of all tornadoes! Let’s watch. The funnel cloud is approaching land and we estimate about one minute it will start it’s destruction. Radar also detects heavy thunderstorms approaching. Oh! The tornado hit the ground and is starting it’s destruction. The trees are down and everything! This tornado will be recorded in history and has taken place as number one deadliest tornado as the tornado is over. We will monitor the tornado and the destruction until farther notice. Ah! We have received a footage from this family, it looks like the tornado did big destruction there and that family seemed to survive. The tornado is now leaving the area leaving heavy rainfall and thunderstorms. Now it’s heading for Starksville! The place where the Mississippi State University is. And the radar detects it’s going to be more worse here. The trees are falling and the buildings are crashing down on each other, the state university is down! For all people in this disaster currently, try to hide as low as you can, the tornado will leave in approximately 6 minutes. As we see it will be sunny as soon as the tornado leaves the area. It left! Now it’s heading in north towards Memphis! Memphis is such a big city, I can’t imagine the destruction, lets check what is happening right now.
The tornado is leaving Mississippi with 600 miles per hour, as I said people in Memphis and near Memphis, hide as low to the ground as possible, if you can go to somewhere like a basement, it would be better. Hide under hard things that can protect you from heaving things and stay away from the window! It is right now deadly and crews are monitoring Mississippi to check status and anyone who can tell us about their experience, please tell as soon as you can. The power lines will be up again in a few days so try to contact us. If you need a home, there is a tent place nearby who is now offering tents for free, get one and live in there until you are able to get back to regular life again. Now back to the tornado. Currently in Memphis destruction the big city, oh! In the video I see some things in there, now lets zoom in and I see cars, rubble, and in fact, I think I see people. Facts are that you can die being airborne so lets just hope luck for this big city to thrive again after this tornado. Radar detects the tornado has grown smaller at a 100 mph now. It is now in suburban places causing damage. It’s getting smaller and smaller. A big shopping mall get damaged and lots of things are crashing down but the tornado, its now so slaw and tiny. Gone! The tornado has gone and everything is a disaster. Let’s wait for the crews to report. 1 thousand people dead and 583 people injured. This is the deadliest tornado recorded. 603 words

July 2022 SWC Writing Megathread

Ya know, once me and my DI team– that's Destination Imagination, it's like a creativity competition sort of thing– we were at the Global Finals, at our hotel, and someone had brought some BeanBoozled Jelly Beans– you know what those are, right– the jelly beans that have the gross flavors, and you have to guess whether you're about to eat a gross one or a normal one– anyway, we decided to put them in a clear cup so it would be easier to tell where the colors were that we were picking. A couple members of our team decided to be spectators, and I joined them, of course– I'm not the adventurous type. We were a few minutes into the game– one of the girls, a couple years older than me, somehow kept getting the ‘dishwasher’ flavor, and she almost threw up– and all of a sudden this one kid, Taylor, says, “I bet I could chug the whole cup of BeanBoozled.” The cup was still about two thirds full. We all had the same response: “Taylor, I don't think that's a good idea.” Taylor, however, grinned mischievously and lifted the cup– and poured it into his mouth as one might with a cup of water. We watched, amazed, as he chewed and swallowed the mixed-up, disgusting flavors such as Dog Food, Dead Fish, and Stinky Socks. He made a weird gagging noise, and we thought he might throw up– instead, he just wiped his mouth on the back of his sleeve and said, “That wasn't so bad.” Our reaction was what you might expect– “What on earth, Taylor!? You literally chugged that thing!” He enjoyed the attention, of course– he's the kind of kid who would do almost anything for a laugh. Moral of the story? Just ‘cuz it’ll make your friends laugh doesn't mean it's smart.

Part 1: Informational Article (Fake Crime)
“The Arli Crisis of Mango Hill” - 816 WORDS
(Note: the Arli desc is my persona, NOT how I look irl /lh)
Early on the 14th of December, an entire supply of newly shipped mangoes was reported stolen from Mountain Goat Market. The theft, which left hundreds of customers without mangoes for days, has now been attributed to a familiar figure: “Arli”, the notorious thief sometimes known as Dogeiana Schuyler—her alibi. But this time, Arli will not escape the consequences. This must be the last time her name is typed on the news.
Before the chaos began, Arli was a normal customer of Mountain Goat Market, but an unknown circumstance changed her behavior in February. On Friday, February 25th, it was discovered that Arli had stolen an entire basket of cookies from her local market. She then somehow (after ten months, this development is still a topic of confusion) obtained an army of corgi dogs who retrieved the rest of the market’s cookies for her. Arli pleaded not guilty of theft and corgi misuse, but was found guilty and arrested. She was no longer seen as a public threat, until she was revealed to have escaped from jail, living under the alias of “Dogeiana Schuyler”. Whilst carrying on this charade, she managed to speak out against Arli’s actions. When the police discovered that she really was Arli, she was arrested once again.
Arli’s sentence lasted five months, and she was freed from jail in November. Kendra, the manager of Mountain Goat Market, disagreed with Arli’s release, saying, “The havoc wreaked upon our market stretched far beyond just a basket of cookies—we were put in the spotlight for weeks, for an awful reason. I do not condone Arli’s early release and I will be making sure that she does not create any more issues.” Kendra’s strategy seemed to work for a significant amount of time. There were no reports of any thefts caused by Arli in November.
In early December, a couple of strange events were noted at Mountain Goat Market. An entire shelf’s contents were turned upside down, and dollar bills were found folded up into the shapes of paper cranes. Kendra attributed the strange events to Arli—recent security camera footage shows her arriving in the market in the evening hours, and leaving with nothing in her basket. WCS reporters interviewed market employees about the strange situation—one specifically stated, “given the events of the past year, with that cookie thief Arli, I am afraid to see what’s going to occur in our market”. The employees promptly went to fix the altered displays, and few customers seemed to notice—although one customer, during last week’s broadcast about the matter, claimed, “This market sure does have some quirks to it!”
Then, on Wednesday, December 14th, word got out that another theft had occurred at Mountain Goat Market—this time, the loss of an entire shipment of mangoes. That morning, just minutes after they were brought into the market, they were taken—and the theft was traced back to Arli. She was seen tinkering with security cameras while wearing a face mask to disguise her identity. However, Arli failed to deactivate the camera (assuming that was her goal), removed the disguise, and was seen removing the box of mangoes from the market. When employees arrived to the market, they immediately noticed the problem and reported it to the Mango Hill police department. The Chief of Police reported that Arli has been taken into custody.
Arli’s motive is still uncertain. Interrogators claim that she has declined to respond to many questions—specifically her cause for stealing the mangoes. But one thing is for sure: Arli’s hostility for Mountain Goat Market has not been combatted by five months in jail. And knowing her former elusive methods of escape, it seems, at this point, that Arli will never be stopped.
If you see Arli—she has golden-brown hair with purple streaks and bright, violet eyes—please report the location, time, and circumstance to the Mango Hill Police Department immediately. If you notice any strange occurences (like upside-down displays or missing items) at Mountain Goat Market, please go to a market employee and show them the subject.
For years, Mango Hill has abided peacefully without any crime or chaos. The Arli crisis has brought a spotlight to our village—and now, we must show our nearby communities that this spotlight is a good thing. That even if their first impression of us is Arli’s schemes and crimes, we are resilient and we will eventually outsmart Arli. Your help in this matter is greatly appreciated—again, if you know anything about the Arli situation, please report it to a Mango Hill Police Department officer. WCS News will be providing regular and thorough updates about this matter. Shop with caution at Mountain Goat Market and nearby stores, stay attentive and alert, and, with cautious optimism, remember that this will, hopefully, be the last time we report on one of Arli’s infractions.

Part 2: Opinion Article (Real-World)
Procrastination is Everywhere - 839 WORDS
See, I did wait to write this article until the second-to-last day. That is one type of harmful procrastination: stressing yourself out by pushing all large, intimidating tasks to a later date, eventually finding them piled up on your to-do list—or worse, forgetting they exist until the very last minute. And that type of procrastionation continues to weigh down on you, maybe with a bad grade or a not-so-great piece that you know you could have done better on. It manifests as stress, a very unpleasant stress—but there’s worse types of procrastination that all of us are doing right now. It’s something that we can’t solve with a to-do list. If we want to save our world from its problems such as global warming and the effects of inequality, we need to do something now—in some ways, it’s already too late.
Let’s take the current global warming crisis, and think about that. What we imagine it manifesting as—that “last-minute” moment—is a chaotic wreck of disasters swirling around the earth like bleak curtains of fog. But so much has already occurred to put our environment at risk. Countless species have become threatened and endangered, and natural disasters like cyclones caused by rising temperatures set us back on our path to a better future—an exponential increase in danger towards whatever lies ahead. Because, for every day we wait to unite and do something, we lose another valuable day of saving our planet. We lose plants, wildlife, and our own control over our future—something we’ve tried to hold on to for so long, and in focusing on the wrong things, have lost. We say we care, then assume someone else will take care of it. But it takes everyone—or, at least, a large, united front of powerful voices—to remedy something that’s imposed on our entire planet. And if we wait, we might not get the chance. No matter how long humanity continues, our control slips away with every day that we pretend to have control.
Inequality is a problem that we imagine a “perfect solution” to—everyone being considered equal, having the same rights and being able to do as they please. We imagine our perfect future and hope that something can be done—but we don’t know what to do. Maybe it’s procrastination, or maybe it’s fear of trying to figure out what comes next. How many more children need to grow up thinking they’re inferior or superior to others, how many more lives need to be altered, how many more unnecessary divisions need to be made before people pay attention and decide it’s time? And yes, people speak out against these matters and try to do something. But everybody needs to show that they care if we want to even start on solving our problems as a society.
And unfortunately, figuring out our next steps is going to be a challenge.
Why do people fall victim to inaction, when they do say they care—and they do? This is a question I’ve thought about a lot—and writing this, I came to something of an answer. Inaction and indifference in the face of knowing about a problem and its devastating effects are not knowing what to do. People are afraid to have control put in their own hands, to tell others what to do and influence a large population when they could be wrong. Which is why one person or a group of individuals with the exact same mindset will struggle—and not succeed—to “fix” the world. We need to put aside our differences, because they distract us from why our arguments over these things came to be in the first place: our mistakes, our failure to make progress.
And what can you do?
That’s a question where a lot of people say to spread the word and join organizations. But sometimes, you don’t know how to—and there’s nothing wrong with feeling that way.
If you are passionate about a cause, a GOOD cause—be that saving endangered wildlife, preserving the ecosystem, speaking out about civil rights, or anything else that means something to you—it’s worth it. It is good to start small, especially when you’re young. And my recommendation for you is to do what you do best. Create something to represent the cause you care about—a painting or a drawing, maybe. Have a bake sale to raise money. Write an essay or a story or a poem. Because when you learn to truly be passionate about what you’re doing, that’s when you can learn to contribute. And that’s what I’m trying to do right now. Maybe I’m giving you the wrong advice—but I hope that this is my own contribution towards yours. And don’t trick yourself into thinking that you’re powerless if you’re a young person. You’re not. Time management skills are something useful to learn when you’re young—but that goes far beyond managing homework assignments.

Part 3: Column (Advice)
Arli's Advice - 543 WORDS
“All my friends are fake, and they left me all alone. I don't have any new friends for the next school year, I'm not confident enough to ask someone to be my friend. What should I do?” -Lily @ArtisticOne111 (146 words)
What?! People like that don't deserve you. If you don't want to outright ask someone to be your friend, then try to find some opportunities to hang out with more people without the intimidating factor. If you're paired up with someone new for a project, for example, talk to them a little bit. Or if you're sitting next to someone, give them a compliment about a cool shirt they’re wearing, or whatnot. If your school offers clubs, it might be nerve-wracking to join one at first, but these clubs can help you facilitate new friendships with people who share your interest. And in the meantime, building up your self-confidence will help. It sounds hard, and it’s not easy—but writing down a list of things that you’re proud of, things you can attribute to you, is one way to start. What’s your proudest achievement?

“I become concious talking to a small group of strangers or acqyantainces but I can address large groups easily. I feel what if they don't like bmwhat I say but in a large group atleast 1 will like what I said. What should I do?” -@Purvitekriwal (161 words)
This is a totally normal thing to struggle with. Oftentimes, I struggle to read things I’ve written, for example, to a small group, rather than a crowd, because I have to address them personally. Building trust with those you know well is a good way to start getting better at this. For example, try reading something you’ve written to them—this could be a helpful exercise. They’ll be proud and happy for you that you wanted to share. Or practice speaking confidently in front of a mirror, so that you can learn to trust yourself. If you have an opinion that you believe in, it’s worth sharing with others. Try some affirmations, or, similar to I said in an earlier response, write down a list of ways speaking out about your opinions has gone well. And finally, surround yourself with people who won’t cut you down. From even a basic interaction, you can tell whether their acquaintance will be worth it.

“My mangoes are rotting!!! What do I do?!?!?!” -Mystic @MysticScratcher101 (135 words)
Okay, take a deep breath. Yes, this is a crisis, but with the right focus and determination, it can be remedied. The first thing you should do is find a refrigerator and freezer. Place your mangoes in the freezer, and set the temperature to 0 degrees Fahrenheit at the warmest (if your mangoes look more salvageable), -30 degrees Fahrenheit at the coldest (if they’ve lost their color altogether). Leave them there until any scrapes on your mangoes have cleared. Then place your mangoes in the refrigerator until their orange shades are fully restored. Finally, drop your mangoes from a height of about one foot onto a sanitized counter. If they do not obtain any serious bruises, they should be restored. If they do, repeat the process until you succeed. This information is not FDA-approved.

“What do you do when a capybara asks for directions to a place you've never heard of?” -Squeak @SqueakyBird520 (101 words)
Keep calm. When they have the capacity to talk, capybaras typically veer away from inflicting pain upon humans, for they are intelligent creatures. However, you should calmly direct the capybara towards a map, maybe one on an electronic device. If you do not have an electronic device, then scrounge in the wild for a paper map (assuming you’re in the wild—if you happen to be in a skyscraper, a humble citizen should have what you need). If you ultimately cannot find a map, make a contract with the capybara to peacefully coexist wherever you are. Then go your separate ways.

Part 4: Other (Horoscopes)
♑️ - 636 WORDS
ARIES: The world has never matched the level of confidence you have in it, but in the coming days, your optimism will be worth it. Don’t let yourself lose patience as recent events have tempted you to do. Eventually, Aries, your hope will overcome your fear. (45)

TAURUS: It’s time for you to pursue your interests. You’ve spent a lot of time looking to the stars, Taurus, and dreaming—now it’s time for you to reach for them. Start small, and take your time, but don’t let anything hold you back. (43)

GEMINI: Being a Gemini isn’t easy, now is it? You feel conflicted sometimes, wondering what step to take next. Don’t let voices from the outside control you. The world can be loud and overpowering. Anyone who tries to tell you who you are is probably wrong. Listen to your head and your heart and let your instincts be the judge. (59)

CANCER: You have an advantage over others. You are intuitive and powerful, even if you don’t feel it in yourself. Keep being analytical towards your world, and focus especially on what drives your passions in the coming days, Cancer. It’ll help you zero in on what you love. (47)

LEO: You like to know what’s going on in your world, Leo—to have control. Focus on what matters today. When you get confused, look at the big picture, but don’t let meaningless details distract you. To feel your absolute best and to feel like you have the power that you want, you need to understand your world. (57)

VIRGO: You are more resilient as an earth sign than people believe, Virgo. Your reasonable personality will prove to be useful—people talk loudly and shout their opinions, but eventually, those you know will turn to you as a leader. Don’t let others silence your thoughts—even speak a bit louder if you have to. Don’t let them think you’re weak, because you’re not. (63)

LIBRA: Anticipation for the future has kept you going, Libra. You’re hopeful about what’s to come but you’re also nervous. Take a deep breath and step back. Try some positive visualization—imagine the best possible scenario surrounding you. And then do everything you can to make it happen in the coming days and weeks. (53)

SCORPIO: You’ve always kept caution in check when going about the world. The best way to do that is to know who you can trust. Keep those who you trust close. Be impartial towards those you don’t until they have proven it—let them show their truest side. (47)

SAGITTARIUS: Time is passing too slowly for you, isn’t it, Sagittarius? You love an action-packed life, and that isn’t proving true. Divide up the wait for your next big adventure into a few parts—days, weeks, months if you need to—and get excited to check each off. It’ll make waiting more fun, and the experience all the more worth it. (61)

CAPRICORN: A lot of people like to believe that Capricorns are the ruthless overachievers of the zodiac. Prove them wrong today. Be your most authentic self and set your own boundaries. Listen to other people, and be open to changing your mind. But don’t let their opinions change you. In this way, you can rise to your full Capricorn power. (59)

AQUARIUS: Aquarius sounds like the type of sign to go with the flow, given their name. But today, when you need to, tell someone what you want. Be calm and kind, but don’t back down if they try to shut you down. If you believe in something, it’s worth going for. (50)

PISCES: Life as a Pisces is unique, isn’t it? Always thinking and observing your world. Today, get right into the heart of an experience. Just let yourself live—have some well-deserved time to yourself or enjoy an adventure. You’ve spent a lot of time flowing with the world. Now it can wait. (52)

316 words of a really weird convo (I have left out details)
Horror!

Now, settle in. If my half decent brain was to even remember a solid two and a half minutes of my life correctly, I wouldn’t be here ranting to you about it. But as always, I have left both the daily and the weekly down to nothing (granted last time my weekly was started at eleven a.m., whereas now it’s 2:14 in the afternoon. Go figure. Luckily for me, I just had a chat with a friend, and that’s what I’ll be telling you about. I don’t have the memory of a goldfish, I’m writing this around two minutes after our call ended. Without further ado, here you go.
“So, do you want to have a sleepover or hang out?” My friend (we’ll call her Greta for confidentiality reasons) asked.
“I don’t know, what do you want?” I said. “You know how indecisive I am.”
I propped my phone on something sturdy and began folding my clothes as I talked to her.
We got off track for a few seconds, me showing her my sketchbook and coloring in some ugly drawings (as a joke of course, I make no ugly drawings if I can do something about it).
“So, when do you want to do the sleepover?” I asked, trying to redirect our attention back on track.
“Wait! You said sleepover!” she pointed out, laughing.
“Oh, well too late to argue with my subconscious mind, huh?” I said.
“Do you just want to hang out?” she asked.
“Well it’s starting to seem like you don’t want a sleepover,” I joked back.
“What! I never said that!” she grinned.
“Okay, since we obviously can’t make our own choices, let’s just do a sleepover,” I laughed.
Now, showing my sketchbook and getting off track probably took a minute and forty-five by itself, so here’s your amazing outro. Moral of the story, always trust your subconscious mind.

Meet Harry, Thriller Cabin’s muffin-loving new mascot

NOTE: This is a mock serious article. Anything that may be perceived as an insult or “attack” is meant jokingly and should be treated as such. Please do not take personal offense from this article; nothing in it was written to be taken seriously. Thank you.

If you are involved in SWC, you may have met Harry, the muffin loving capybara who has recently moved into the Thriller Rift. Between the heated mascot debates between Myth and Thriller and the adorable rodent’s new Scratch account, it would be a surprise if you were not yet aware of them. Most SWCrs, in fact, have at least heard of the capybara and their presence in camp.

If you are not involved in SWC, you are probably asking yourself, “What is a capybara doing in an online writing camp?” or even “What’s a capybara?” Well, according to Wikipedia, a capybara is a “giant cavy rodent native to South America.” They are furry animals that can grow to be up to twenty-four inches, making them largest rodents on the planet. Harry, however, is a particularly special capybara. For one thing, they type and have a Scratch account, where they chat with members of SWC. For another, they are Thriller’s beloved mascot, well-known for their purple pompoms and enthusiastic encouragement. Who could procrastinate on the weekly with such an enthusiastic capybara cheering them on?

I was fortunate enough to get an interview with Harry, held on the their account profile. The rodent introduced themself as “Harry, a friendly capybara and mascot of Thriller!” They added, “I love to cheer other people on, I can talk and have a squeaky voice, and my favorite food is muffins <3”

When asked how they became Thriller’s mascot, Harry admitted that their memory wasn’t too clear on the matter. Before coming to the Rift, they were “just a normal capybara living in South America… One day I stumbled into the Rift, and the bearers took me in.” Given how kind Thriller’s leaders are, this isn’t difficult to believe at all. Although it is quite likely that Birdi took one look at this talking capybara and saw an opportunity. Harry is quite a motivator for the Thriller campers.

Besides, Harry quite enjoys being a cabin mascot. “It’s wonderful!” they said about their current job. “I love to cheer everyone on, and it’s amazing to see everyone happy and proud of themselves when they’ve accomplished something <3 Thriller’s even catching up to Myth, and everyone’s super awesome!”

And of course they have a healthy amount of cabin spirit. When asked why Thriller was the best cabin, they responded, “Other than the fact that we’re simply superior ;D absolutely everyone in Thriller is absolutely amazing and unique and brings something special to the cabin, and we will triumph over Myth < #thrillerftw.”

After all these heartfelt, enthusiastic answers, it isn’t hard to understand Harry’s immediate popularity with the Thriller members. Their profile is filled with starstruck greetings and campers bearing armloads of muffins. “Hello Harry, our lovely mascot ,” one camper writes. Others have offered up praise and even sugar. Indeed, SWCers who are not even in Thriller have stopped by Harry’s profile to say hello. They come from Script, Fairy Tales, Real-Fi, and Poetry. However, one cabin does not seem to share in these sentiments. Many Myth campers are none too pleased with the capybara mascot. Myth and Thriller have been battling it out for the top leaderboard spot since camp started, with Myth currently in first place. Needless to say, the two cabins have a bit of a rivalry going on between them. Harry, with their pompoms and loud words of encouragement, poses a threat to Myth. The capybara is boosting the morale of Thriller campers, motivating them to power through the dailies and weeklies. Above all else, Myth is determined to keep their place as number one on the leaderboard. Because of all this, many Myth campers hold a strong dislike of Harry, going so far as to send hate messages and compare the capybara to their own mascot, George the three-headed unicorn (unfavorably, of course). Several Thriller campers have returned the insults, loudly informing Myth that capybaras are superior to unicorns, any that claim otherwise is a lie. The leaders of Myth and Thriller have agreed to respect and support one another’s mascots, saying that George and Harry are equally lovable. Their campers, however, do not all seem to share these sentiments. Whether or not this cabin rivalry will escalate any further remains to be seen.

In spite of all this negativity, Harry remains quite positive. They enjoy their new home in the Thriller Rift, saying of it, “It’s so much more fun .” They continue to cheer on campers, and this encouragement has been working; as of today, Thriller remains in second, only a few weeklies behind Myth. If the campers continue to work hard, they may just claim first place for themselves.

When asked if they had anything else that they would like to share with the public, Harry responded confidently, “People should give me more muffins :pleading face: and #thrillerftw!”

So next time you stop by the Thriller Rift, you may want to pay Harry a visit. Bring some muffins, too; supplying campers with motivation is hard work. Besides, I’m sure Harry will appreciate it. What capybara doesn’t appreciate free snacks?

Scratch, as everyone knows, is a kid’s coding website. Their About Us page says it all: “Scratch is the world’s largest coding community for children and a coding language with a simple visual interface that allows young people to create digital stories, games, and animations.” Indeed, many users created their accounts to practice basic programming skills and join a supportive coding community. Just take a look at Scratch’s front page; it features the aforementioned games and animations, all created using the same blocky coding language. Platformers, “digital stories,” multi animator projects, parallexes, they’re all there. And while that’s all well and good, some Scratchers, I suppose you could say…aren’t exactly using this site for its intended purpose.

I first learned about Scratch through school. In fourth and fifth grade, I had a class account, where I made simple coding projects alongside my fellow students. When the pandemic happened, I rediscovered the website - only this time, I paid closer attention to the community. It seemed that Scratch wasn’t only for coders. There were artists, musicians, readers and writers, some of whom didn’t know the first thing about coding. People made short stories and novels. They geeked out over their favorite books. They drew art, both digitally and traditionally. They sang, played music, composed their own songs. Scratch had a whole creative community bubbling just beneath its surface. As an artistic person myself, I liked that. I liked that a lot.

Then, while exploring this completely new side of a website I thought I had known, I stumbled across SWC, an online camp full of writers. Confession time: I watched the July 2021 session unfold, through all the chaos of cabin wars and inside jokes and cabin competition. There were fun daily prompts, people procrastinating on the weekly, in-cabin activities, and matching profile pictures. Everyone seemed to be thoroughly enjoying themselves. The more I looked into this community, the more I liked what I found. I scrolled through the descriptions of old SWC cabins that had fallen prey to cabin destruction (disappointing that we can’t do that anymore, but oh well). I viewed users’ leader applications, flipped through the memory books that commemorated past sessions, read the winning writing competition entries. For about a year I was a full on stalker. Mildly creepy, yes, but it was the next best thing to actually being in SWC. There is a reason, you know, that I am a first time camper who understands most of the inside jokes about mangoes and arsonists. There is a reason that the first people I followed on Scratch are Birdi (@Bellevue91) and Alba (@-Alocasia). (Symphony is absolutely amazing, all the people who think there is no good original music on Scratch just haven’t discovered Alba yet.) This camp, this whole community, looked like so much fun, and I wanted so badly to be a part of it. Now here I am, a year later, finally with my own Scratch account and a camper in SWC. So far, I have not been disappointed. This is one of the best Julys of my life, and that is mostly because of a very special writing camp. It took me a while, but I’m finally here and ready to join the party.

This is the reason that I joined Scratch, and the reason that I will continue to Scratch. It has nothing to do with the coding (even though that’s what I told my parents to convince them that I should have an account) and everything to do with the artistic community. All these artists and writers and musicians, people my own age, people like me, have formed this wonderful community. They create, share those creations, and form friendships and traditions. Why wouldn’t I want to be a part of that? There is so much artistic talent on Scratch. Look at some of the popular artists (@Berricake, for example (I discovered her account through SWC, so there’s your proof that this camp has real talent)) and their stunning pieces. Or check out some of the Scratch singers and musicians (Alba, of course, is a great place to start). Or open up the SWC megathread and read some of the writing pieces that have been posted there. So many up-and-coming singers and artists and authors reside on Scratch. One day, we’ll be ready to share our passions with the rest of the world. For now, in our own little niche in Scratch, we can create together.

Yes, Scratch was originally founded as a children’s coding website. Yes, the coding side of the community is also wonderful, and I’m not trying to devalue them. The artists’ side, however, is the reason I joined. We have our less-than-pleasant moments, but for me the good has far outweighed the bad. I made a Scratch account to write and create art. I won’t be stopping anytime soon.

Ask Inky

Hello, and welcome back to Ask Inky, Scratch News’s weekly advice column! Today, I, Inky be answering all of your pressing life questions, with a special focus on writing and SWC! (For those looking to appear in future advice columns, simply leave your question in this studio here.)

Question: How do I get over my fear of any cabin other than hi-fi winning swc? - zparkly

Answer: Overcoming your fears can be difficult, especially when they concern SWC cabin standings. The solution, however, is actually quite simple. First, close your eyes. Take deep, calming breaths. Ask yourself, do cabin standings really matter? Will my life be over if Hi-Fi doesn’t win? If the answer is no, maintain that mindset for the rest of the session. If the answer is yes (which it inevitably will be), take several more steadying breaths and force yourself to face the truth: Thriller will win. Hi-Fi does not even stand a chance. Once you have acknowledged this indisputable fact, your fears should be greatly eased. I hope this helped!

Question: How do I stop procrastinating on dailies/weeklies? - Piper_Camps

Answer: Procrastination is an incredibly common habit to suffer from, and also incredibly difficult to break. My only advice for you is this: think about how by writing more, you can improve your skills. Think about how by improving your skills, you can win the writing competition. Think about how by completing the dailies and weeklies, you can earn more points for your cabin. Think about how much higher your word count could be if you just stopped procrastinating. Now think about how all these things can help your cabin win. Hopefully you now feel more motivated! (Or just eat a mango. That helps too!)

Question: I've heard that mangoes are the only way to solve the I'm-going-to-procrastinate-on-the-weekly-and-stay-up-till-weel-past-midnight bug, but are they really the only way? - Fantastical_Words

Answer: Mangoes do indeed cure the I’m-going-to-procrastinate-on-the-weekly-and-stay-up-till-well-past-midnight bug! So does thinking about how your cabin will lose if you don’t start writing. However, the I’m-going-to-procrastinate-on-the-weekly-and-stay-up-till-weel-past-midnight bug is an entirely different illness, though it does have a similar-sounding name. The only cure for this bug is to quit SWC and stay far away from mangoes - a sad fate indeed. If you suffer from this disease, don’t try to cure yourself. It simply isn’t worth it.

Question: How do I make my writing more descriptive? - Magnolia012

Answer: Two words: figurative language. You don’t need to be overly flowery, but a few creative similes and metaphors will add some extra spice to your descriptive writing. This is can be easier said than done; I myself struggle a lot with effectively using figurative language. Reading other authors’ work is helpful when it comes to this; the best way to learn how to write well, after all, is to study how others do it. I wish you luck in your future descriptive writing!

Question: AHH! My schedule is so busy that I barely have time to help my team in SWC? What should I do? - Emma201112y

Answer: Quit everything so you can write uninterrupted, obviously! (Don’t worry, I’m only joking.) In all seriousness, I would advise you to write with what time you have, and not stress about it too much. SWC is just for fun, after all, and you have no real obligations to participate. If it really gets to be too much, you may want to consider dropping out. Real life should always come first, and I’m sure there are backup campers who wouldn’t mind taking your place. Do whatever works best with your real life. Again, SWC is just for fun.

“Something caused me to look up the instant you walked in. I don't know what it was. Maybe I had a feeling… or something. Whatever it was, I'm grateful for it. You weren't late, exactly, but it you kind of were because everyone else was already there. I don't know why everyone always showed up early to Gillian's art class, but it made it really obvious when someone came for the first time. Like you that day. I didn't know what it was then, at all, which I know makes no sense, but whatever. It was just once I looked up and saw you I couldn't look away. You were wearing jeans that had the bottoms cut off… they weren't shorts, they were too long for that. They were just missing about four inches of normal pants length and they were fraying at the bottom because there was no hem. Your shirt was originally white I think, but it was covered in so much paint that it was hard to tell. Walk into anywhere else wearing that and you're going to get some pretty weird looks, but in Gillian's art class, you were automatically cool for it. You hadn't started dying your hair yet, and it was a lot shorter then too, just barely touching your shoulders. It was pushed back with a headband to keep those stray uncooperative locks you're always complaining about from fluffing their way into your face. I remember Charlie elbowing me from her side of our desk and asking me if I knew you. I shook my head. Then somehow you ended up joining Charlie and me at out table, and you were so outgoing and confident immediately, it amazed me. You just came right up to us and said, with so much enthusiasm, “Hi! I'm Skylar! I'm nine years old. Miss Gillian said I might like to be friends with you two. I just moved here, you see.” Charlie immediately introduced herself, and I did so hesitantly after. Obviously you did like being friends with us, considering it's been seven years and you still are,” I finish with a smile. Charlie, Skylar, and I have told the stories of us meeting each other from our various perspectives so many times, and yet for some reason we continue. Both moments, me meeting Charlie the summer before First Grade when I was scared of summer camp and she helped me out, and Skylar moving to New York and walking into our art class two years later, have had huge impacts on each of us. I sit backstage sweating profusely, yeah I was definitely not ready for this. As a kid I had wanted nothing more than to be an actress. I had always admired actors and I'd even been putting on little shows by myself in my room. I had to admit I was pretty good, but there was one thing that was preventing me from ever making it big, my social anxiety. I got nervous just talking to people at school, how was I ever supposed to perform in front of hundreds maybe even thousands of people? I suddenly find myself regretting my decision to sign up for my school's auditions for the school play. They invite students to take part of a different play every year and up until now I would watch the plays and I could only dream of being in one. Now I was moments away from auditioning. Sure, I would only have to perform in front of a few people now, but what if I somehow managed to get in? Then I would have no choice, but to perform in front of the whole school and their families. What if I made a mistake? What if I messed up and ruined the whole thing!? Suddenly a voice interrupts my mini panic attack, talk about ruudeee.
“Stephanie Gardner.” I gulped. It was my turn to go up on stage. There was no turning back now. I took a moment to wipe the sweat off my forehead and erase any evidence of my distress. I mess with my hair a bit hopefully giving it some more volume. I then take a deep breath and swing open the curtains, probably a little bit dramatic, but hey that's what we're here for isn't it. I take a deep breath, my whole future could depend on this moment, yeah probably not that deep, but whatever this could be the start I need for my future acting career. I clear all other thoughts from my head and walk onto the stage.

July 2022 SWC Writing Megathread

Part 1: Main Informational Article (800 words) It can be satire, SWC News, Fake politics, fake crime, sports, or real world.

Breaking News: Another note from the anonymous criminal(s) has been found in a local Walmart. It fell in a fish tank and as a result is unreadable but investigators and local law enforcement are using it as a lead to find the perpetrator. Others, including the employees working at the Walmart, are currently looking for what the criminal and or criminals did.

If you haven’t heard already, this villainous delinquent or gang of them, go to stores, movie theaters, and restaurants doing mildly inconvenient crimes. This lawbreaker’s first appearance, or as the crook said their debut, was at a Sam’s club where they somehow moved every movable item, three inches and one point four centimeters to the right. Somehow this person or people were able to do this all before opening without being seen entering or exiting. The wrongdoer seems to not do these vile acts to small family owned businesses and seems to believe they are modern day robin hood, yet doesn’t seem to realize none of what they do affect the company, just the poor underpaid workers that have to deal with it.

Some other things this person or multiple people have done is take a single sock from every pair of socks in a Target. Changed the background of every tablet and phone in a Best Buy to various movie spoilers like, “Morbius never said it’s morbing time in the critically acclaimed movie Morbius.” Went to various warehouse clubs and has taken every free sample available on multiple occasions. Finally the person went to multiple Olive gardens and when asked to tell the waiter to stop when they were satisfied while grating cheese on their pasta, they never told them to stop. This caused a shortage of cheese for a whole month in restaurants everywhere.

Many questioned how the person wasn’t discovered when they sat in an Olive garden during opening hours and ordered there. In response, apparently the person was dressed in all black, with a mask, gloves and sunglasses on their face. When they ordered their food, they had some sort of voice changer that made the person sound robotic and they ended up putting all their food in takeout boxes anyways. According to the waiters they tipped very well, and quote on quote, “I don’t really care about the cheese thing, That was the biggest tip I’ve seen working here. Criminal or not, more people should be like them.”

Never once did they take off their mask to eat and not a single time was any skin exposed enough to narrow down the culprit down at all. Not even the criminal's age, height or gender was found. After comparing evidence each one of the cheese fanatics varied in height and body type. None of the incidents were at the same time. While this could point to the crimes being committed by a group of people, according to detectives, private investigators, police officers, and even prop makers and movie directors, with the right equipment or enough money all of those changes could be made with silicone molds, wigs, clothes and even toilet paper.

In addition to that all the notes left at the time seemed to be written just a few minutes before the culprit left. Each note had the exact same handwriting, teach and every signature matching perfectly down to the stroke. According to a local third grade English language arts teacher, “It’s the most beautiful cursive I’ve ever seen. When this person is found, instead of giving them jail time you should give them community service. I’d love if he could teach my students cursive, and I would say it’s a punishment matching the crime,”

Due to this, no one still knows if it is one person or a very organized group of criminals with beautiful handwriting. Law enforcement and local judges are also debating if community service of teaching third graders is a valid punishment. At the moment it is not known, though one person suggested that the criminal(s) should just partake in both. The reason being,”I was right behind them in Olive Gardens. Because they never stopped the waiter from grating cheese, I had none for my chicken tenders! It was my birthday and thet vile sinner ruined it!” This caused a supreme court level case debating if cheese belonged on chicken tenders. Surprisingly many sided with the birthday boy.

Wait– It seems new evidence has come to light. Some random person who wanted to reach for the fish food behind the fish tank, for no spoken reason found a note. The police confiscated it and read the note, which goes as follows

Ha, scrubs! Bet you’ve been trying to find out what I did at your favorite Walmart. Well guess what? I did absolutely nothing! You can choose if you wanna believe me or not but either way you’ve wasted your entire day. GG my boys. Cya next time.
Robin Hood
P.S. Thanks for the compliment, teach. I wouldn’t’ve been able to write so well without you, you're still my favorite teacher.

P.P.S. Hey birthday boy, I’m thankful I took all the cheese, not only was it delicious but anyone who puts cheese on chicken tenders is the scum of the earth.

Part 2: Main Opinion Article (800 words) Can be about scratch, sports, the real world (non-political), music, a restaurant or book, tv show or movie review.

As a person who doesn’t watch shows that my friends are watching like live action realistic shows or all of the latest disney plus shows, TV has gotten stale. I’m more of a cartoon loving girl, I like anime for many reasons but I think the main reason is because I love how much effort is put into it. Anything can happen with animation and the immersion won’t be ruined by terrible looking CGI. I especially love how it’s mainly 2D. 3d animation is less costly but it doesn’t have all of the charm of 2D animation, at times it feels soulless and dull. But even with my love of anime, sometimes I like being american and I want to watch a cartoon but there isn’t much

There is basically nothing on Nickelodeon at all. On Cartoon Network there’s only Craig of the Creek which I enjoy, The Amazing World of Gumball ended, and everything else isn’t my cup of tea. In my opinion it's just butt jokes and potty humor, which does make sense, I don’t think I’m the target demographic anymore. Even then, there’s a lot of shows for kids way younger than me that I enjoy. On Disney, Amphibia, an absolutely amazing show, just ended and The Owl House is going to be over soon. Miraculous Ladybug is a trainwreck I watch to complain about, I still enjoy it but Marinette and Adrien and basically every other character in the show is flawed beyond belief. This would be fine if it was shown in a negative light or used to convey a lesson but it’s used as a comedic aspect. Marinette is not funny.

But Whimsy! What about Netflix shows? Or any streaming service for that matter? The thing is, I don’t have any. Well I have one, and that;s Netflix and I see a lot of Amazing shows on there. Sadly I’ve watched almost none purely because of the almost endless options. I think this is a psychological thing, I would say correct me if I’m wrong but no one is going to read this, where basically when humans are faced with too many options, they spend more time debating which one to choose instead of simply choosing one. On cable this problem doesn’t really exist because you can just watch what’s on TV and it doesn’t have half as many choices as a streaming service like Netflix does. In the case where you're like me, an indecisive person with phenomenal taste, I have the perfect show for you. But first I need to inform you of what a franime is.

A franime is, well, I don’t really know, I made the word so it’s basically anything I say, but let me try to find similarities between the five. Franime are kids’ shows with, I’d say, prepubescent girls, maybe a bit older, or a lot younger as the target demographic. They have magical elements, but are not from either Japan or the U.S. The name is supposed to be a mix of anime, due to magical girl themes, and France, but after I coined the name I realized only two of them are from France, Miraculous Ladybug (the worst of the franimes /hj) and Lolirock, the show I’m going to review. The other three are Winx club; an Italian show, Angel’s friends; which is also Italian, and Flowering heart; a Korean show. The name is still, and forever be ‘franime’ because italianime just doesn’t work.

Now that was a really long intro for a probably really short show review because today I’m going to be talking about Lolirock, the best franime in my opinion. Winx club is probably better not going to lie but it’s been a long time since I’ve watched it so I’m not really counting it. Now what is Lolirock? Lolirock is a french animated show following a girl named Iris who, ever since she was little, singing would cause weird unexplainable things to happen. After getting convinced from her childhood friend and longtime crush Nathaniel, she entered a singing competition, only for her voice to cause everything to blow up. Thankfully that was the plan and she finds out she's a lost magical princess and the judges were also princesses looking for her. Little did she know a dark force was looking for her and she had to stop them, all while singing in her rock band, falling in love, and hiding her identity.

First the story, it’s great! It’s episodic but en. joyable and there are plot moving episodes scattered through season one and two. The characters are fantastic and their relationships are pretty realistic. Iris and Nathaniel have a really healthy and cute relationship and it’s realistic as well. The fact that Iris is secretive is actually addressed in the show. Her friendship with Talia and Auriana, the other two main characters and her bandmates, have really good dynamics. Their friendship is believable. There are three villains, Gramorr, the big bad, and Praxina and Mephisto, the lackeys. Gramorr isn’t too memorable, Praxina and Mephisto are the ones that steal the show. They’re siblings and you can tell, they act just like them. There are a lot of other characters but let’s move on to the music.

The music slaps, it's electronic, and might seem over autotuned but I love it. They have performances at the end of each episode, the music changes every few episodes. The visuals during each performance are amazing, even though they aren’t canonical, or at least I believe that (they use their powers on stage way to much for it to be passed off as cool effects and on their first concert, they had a full crowd) All around the music is memorable and I find myself singing the songs every now and then.

I reached the word count a good while ago so I’m going to wrap this up. All of the episodes of Lolirock can be found for free on YouTube so you don’t need to pay for anything. Also if the show sounds childish just check it out! My brother is five years older than me but still enjoyed the show as much as I did. I also watched it with my sister who’s four years younger than me. Watch it with the whole family! Now I know the second you heard the name Lolirock you rushed to watch it and you're already midway through season one but I have to say one thing. Season two leaves on a massive cliff hanger, it ties up the main plot but there are so many things that are unknown. The last episode was in 2017, and by the looks of it, there isn’t going to be a season three. Despite this I think the watch is worth it, I wholeheartedly recommend everyone to watch Lolirock.

Part 3: Column (500 words) it can be a lot of things I don’t wanna write, I’m gonna do an advice column.

Q: My friend hates goats and mangoes, should I unfriend them?

A: You shouldn’t unfriend them right away, instead you should inquire why they hate mangoes and goats. It may be from unresolved trauma, maybe they choked on a mango as a wee child. Maybe a goat bleated at them as they now have intense phobia of goats and the sounds they make. If so, you should not unfriend them but instead recommend therapy, or at the least try to help them overcome their fears.

If they simply hate mangoes and goats with a burning passion, that’s when you should consider losing them as a friend. Simply disliking the taste of mangoes, or not liking how goats look is not at all a valid excuse. Everyone should love them, to the point where it’s unexplainable why. Everyone is allowed to be themselves, except when it comes to mangoes and goats. Mangoes and goats being the best is a fact and not an opinion. This is not a dystopia where everyone has to be the same, this is life.

Q: I think my cat is plotting to kill me, what do I do?

A: While you can never be exactly sure what your cat is thinking, and for all we know it is just vibing, in the case you think your feline friend is actually your ferocious foe you should accept your fate. I had a friend whose cat was also planning their untimely demise and they did all they could. They built a fort, set traps, used nonlethal weapons to not kill but slow down their former lovely kitty cat. It was all for naught. I visited them later that night. The cat deflected every single blow, and didn’t fall for a single trap. The cat was sitting where my friend was once hiding. It was eating cat food and sitting in the litter box. As for my friend? Notice how I said I had.

One thing you can attempt is to not hide or try to put off your doom. Instead treat your cat with love and affection. Give it their favorite food and toys, and play with your cat. Make each of your cat’s days the best days of their life. Maybe your cat will decide you deserve to live and stop plotting or throw away all the traps it already set. There is a chance this can work, but sadly I have a way to say. Of course if your cat isn’t plotting anything you should be completely fine. Instead you should try to stop your paranoia and trust your cat. But there is always a chance that you are right about your cat, in that case, be ready. Maybe feed it a mango or let it ride a goat. Actually scratch everything I just said, just feed it all the mangoes you have. Get your cat the coolest goat you can find. Whether or not your cat is planning your death, both of those things will satisfy it. Trust me, I’ve never had a cat in my life, let alone one that might be attempting to kill me.

Q: HELP I THINK EVERYONE HAS GONE CRAZY! How can I stop them from talking about mangoes?

A: They aren’t the crazy ones, you are. How do you stop them from talking about mangoes? You don’t.

Part 4: Other (200 words) advertisement

prompt: write about a your characters two-and-a-half-minutes (302 words)
“Hmm… Two and half minutes? Well, I got time to spare.”
I looked around at the farmer's market stands, my eyes falling on the apple stand. The man who was usually running the stand wasn't there today, and in his place was a short, shaky, little boy. The boy looked to be about twelve, and his eyes kept darting around nervously.
I casually walked over to the apple stand, looking right at the boy.
“Hi, kid. You sellin' apples?”
He gulped, then nodded. “Y-yep. D-do you want any?”
I put a finger on my chin, looking up to the sky in a thinking sort of position.
“Mmm… I think I would.” I said sarcastically.
The boy quickly nodded. He attempted to pull out the barrel of apples, but he was so weak that it took him about a minute.
During this time, I watched him with one eyebrow raised.
“Kid… You sure you're supposed to be runnin' the stand?”
The boy quickly nodded again, even faster than the last time.
“H-here's the apples. O-one per silver.”
I gasped in the fakest way possible.
“Oh… You sure you didn't get the prices mixed up? When I come, it's two for a silver. You know, kids aren't really supposed to be runnin' the stands…”
“O-oh! Y-yeah, it's t-two for a silver.”
“Good. Here's your money, kid.”
I picked up the apples I wanted, and I threw the kid some silvers.
I pretended to walk off, but I snuck up behind the stand. Then, I watched the boy's expression crumble, as he touched the silvers, and they faded to dust.
“Ahh… Nothing like scamming children. So gullible it's funny.”
I'd be back for that kid later though. He could be useful, in a weak, wimpy, sort of way.

Part 1: Main Informational Article: (Fake Crime) (824 Words)

Early on the 12th of July, Ray’s Donuts was ransacked. It is obvious that the crime committer who is yet to be revealed has a bit of an obsession with donuts. On the 11th, Ray closed up late at eleven. It had been a long day for Ray having to take care of civilians’ donut needs. He cannot fulfill their needs right now because of the massive crime that has occurred anyway.
When Ray closed up, he did not lock the door to Ray’s Donuts properly. At about four a.m. on July 12th, a 5’9 figure dressed in all black entered the donut shop. The figure lingered, looking at Ray’s supplies for about half an hour, taking in the sweet savor of the donuts. Eventually, the figure loaded all of Ray’s freshly prepared donuts, and his supplies which he would have used the next day to make more donuts into the back of a shady white van. They drove off at about six a.m., half an hour before Ray opens.
When Ray found out that his shop was ransacked, he broke down in tears, and put a sign on the window that said ‘Closed for the day because of ransacking.’ Ray was devastated. Here is what he had to say:
“I had closed up the night before at eleven p.m., I had been staying late preparing donuts for my customers the next day. I put the donuts in a warmer so they would be fresh for tomorrow. All I had to do when I came in was ice them, and the icing was already prepared as well. I was all ready for the next day at work. That night, I had a shaky sleep. I kept waking up, worrying about my donut shop. I guess I should have followed my instinct, but half of the time, my instinct isn’t reality. How am I supposed to know the difference between false instinct and personality? When I came in the next morning, my donut shop was ransacked. I was devastated. We looked at the security cameras, which were not much help. However, my head cook Elijah seems to know something. I don’t know what, but he knows something.”
Ray was correct, the security cameras did not give us much to work with except for a few small details. Ray was also correct about how his head cook Elijah seemed to know something. We interviewed him the next day, and here is what he had to say:
“After Ray closed up, I stayed behind, preparing more dough for donuts in the upcoming days. It was late, I knew it was, but I had to catch up on making dough. It needed to be done. The time was about four a.m. when I heard a crash and a bang. Two big men were pulling me between them. I felt like a ragdoll. Eventually, one of the crooks put chloroform on my face, and I passed out. As I dozed in and out of consciousness, I heard that the name of the criminal stealing from Ray’s shop was Jimmy Smith, and his favorite donut was a blue frosted, sprinkled one. Eventually, when Ray came in, he found me on the floor. My memory was blurry and I hardly remembered a thing, but as the minutes inched past it came back to me. I knew that the criminal was called Jimmy Smith and that there were two other men with him, who weren’t caught on camera, helping him.”
Elijah’s account taught us that the name of the criminal that ransacked Ray’s donuts was Jimmy Smith. However, there were a bunch of Jimmy Smiths in town, so it took the police a little while to find him. They went to several houses. At a few of the houses, they were offered food, at the other houses, things were thrown at them. However, neither of these accounts was the Jimmy Smith that ransacked Ray’s donuts. Eventually, Jimmy Smith came to the authorities on his own, they did not even have to find him.
One day, a big man walked into Ray’s donuts, who was a bit shady looking. This man ordered a blue iced donut with sprinkles. It dawned on Elijah that this was the man that ransacked Ray’s Donuts, because the name that he gave them was Jimmy Smith, and he ordered blue frosted donuts with sprinkles. The police followed him in and took him to the station the following day. They found the supplies that he had stolen and gave them back to Ray after sanitizing them.
Jimmy Smith was put on trial on July 25th, and all evidence pointed to the fact that he had been the criminal who ransacked Ray’s donuts on July 12th. They even found who accompanied him and gave them a sentence as well.
Jimmy Smith’s sentence is a year, and his companions’ sentences are six months.

And that is the end of this story.

Part 2: Main Opinion Article: (Book Review) (818 words)

Mr. Utterson wonders about the sudden change in Jekyll’s attitude. He goes into see his other friend, Dr. Lanyon. Dr. Lanyon had had the shock of his life, and looked awful. He did not want to talk about Henry Jekyll under any circumstances. This just makes Mr. Utterson even more confused, and leaves the reader with even more questions. Eventually, Utterson gets a visit from Jekyll’s servant, Poole. Poole is concerned because there is some shady business going on and he asks Utterson to get to the bottom of it. They eventually get into Jekyll’s cabinet to look for him but there is literally not sign of him anywhere other than a note that had been written that day. Inside the two writings that they found reveal the mystery. Utterson goes back to his place to read them. We learn why Lanyon had the shock of his life, and we learn about the relationship between Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. The reader can be satisfied. Part 3: Column: (Gossip) (505 words)

Callie O’Conner’s big secret:
No doubt about it, Callie O’Conner has an interesting personal life. Earlier this week, Callie was seen with a child that the press had no idea about. Some people thought that it must have just been Callie’s niece or nephew or that Callie was just taking care of the child. Turns out that Callie adopted a child behind the back of the press. It was found out yesterday that the child is a girl, and her name is Sandy. Callie took Sandy in after her older sister Claire and her husband Randy died in a car accident. Sandy had no other family to go to. Callie was her only option. Even though Callie hid this from the press, she had a good reason to. She didn’t want Sandy to have publicity before she had to.
More secrets of Callie O’Conner:
Callie O’Conner has been hanging outside around Peakview Orphanage. Now, there wasn’t any real reason why she was there, and the press had no idea why. We interviewed Peakview Orphanage and they said that Callie donates to the orphanage and that she helps orphans with disabilities. She even helps them get adopted.
Callie O’Conner comes from a family of soviets. Callie was raised behind the curtain. It wasn’t until Callie was 16 that she came over to the United States. This is one of the darker sides of Callie O’Conner.
Callie O’Conner hates mangoes. She was seen tossing a mango into the garbage. Why would she do such a thing? Even if the mango was a little moldy, that shouldn’t be done to mangoes.
Callie O’Conner didn’t pick up a lost puppy from a puppy box. All lost puppies from puppy boxes should be picked up. It shouldn’t matter their breed, or the state of the person walking by. They should be picked up because they deserve better. It is assumed now that Callie is a dog hater because of this incident, and there is no evidence to say otherwise. Callie O’Conner is a dog hater.
Callie O’Conner was involved in a huge mango scandal. Callie and some of her friends were throwing mangoes at each other. Mangoes should not be treated like that. They should be treated with love and care until they go into your mouth. It is evident that Callie hates mangoes.
Callie O’Conner is constantly taking photos with her phone. Why would anybody do that? In order to get a proper photograph, one must take it with a camera designated to taking photographs. Callie has no respect for the art of photography. She wasn’t even holding the phone properly!
Callie has a long line of having friends who aren’t such great people. Callie’s friends go with her to mango capades, and scandals. They force her into it. Callie O’Conner should get new friends.
Callie O’Conner loves her cat’s way too much. Once she was seen talking to her cat Mellow like he was a human.
Clearly, there are good and bad aspects to Callie O’Conner’s personal life.

April 23, 2019 - The music was roaring in my ears, blasting from the hidden speakers found just above the tightropes starting platform, drowning out the symphony of the crowd’s stunned cheering below. Flames ignited, soaring up to illuminate my sparkles covering my outfit. To me, it looked ridiculous, like something out of a kid’s costume shop, yet drew collective gasps from the audience below as the sequins cast their reflective glow across the tent, creating hundreds miniature bright burning stars across the folds of fabric. Perhaps the price, paid in my embarrassment, was well worth the reward, the smiles and enchanted eyes of the children watching from hundreds of feet below. The flames held steady, sharing their warm spotlight as the spread below me, far beneath the tightropes I was to walk.

To the audience it looked as if I was a tiny little girl, trapped far from the asylum of safety below. The crackling fire held their attention, a puppet master tying its strings. They were not to see the net, left in place, despite my protests, to catch me, should I fall.

I took a deep breath, looking, for the first time, to the audience below. To them, I was confident. To them, I was scared. To them, I was what they wanted to see in me. But that could never change who I was to me. A pair of bright green eyes stared up at me, belonging to a child, no older than I had been when I first discovered the show stopping acts of the circus. As I surveyed her face, I wondered what she saw as she looked up at me, the girl surrounded by fire.

I held her gaze as I slowly stepped on the rope, gripping its atoms in my feet, finding the delicate balance of life and death. The girl gasped, wonder written in every line of her face. Maybe she too would someday be an acrobat.

THIS HAS STAR WARS SPOILERS IN PART 2

Part 1 Prison Escape - 837 words

Larry Joe was 26 years old when he stole some bread from the store and got away. After that police have been on the lookout for Larry but it was until he stole bananas that he got arrested. He spent lots of time in jail and made some criminal friends. After being in prison for over 2 years he got really angry and wanted to get out. He planned to build a tunnel then told some of his other friends. The next day they snuck and got a few shovels. All day they dug and dug and whenever a police man came by or was looking they would pretend to be exercising or something that is allowed. While they were digging they had someone always on the lookout for police. Then by the end of the day it was cell time so everybody had to be in their cell. Once most police were gone they broke out of their cell but no one knows how. They quickly ran to the tunnel and escaped. An alarm went off at the prison and tons of police and firefighters went out to find the 17 loose criminals. The next morning everyone in the city got alerts on their devices. Everyone was scurrying around trying to pack anything they could in their cars to leave the city. Everyone from the city got to go to a hotel for free because they were forced to leave so the criminals wouldn't hurt them. One week later the police report only five of the criminals have been caught and arrested. Later the next week one of the police looked at the security cameras and noticed the tunnel they dug. He noticed some footprints and decided to follow them. The footprints led to this little house that kind of looked like a hideout. He went inside and he heard the sound of footsteps running toward him. He ran out and called some other police to come from his walkie talkie. A few other police came and they all ran inside. All with handcuffs ready to use they ran towards the footsteps. The police sent two of their dogs out to look for them. Right away one of the dogs started to bark and they all ran after it. Finally able to catch another criminal they call some other police to pick them up and they keep looking. 30 minutes later while they are still looking in the hideout the other dog starts to bark. All of the police ran towards the dog. There was a board on the floor so one of the policemen picked it up and underneath it were stairs. The policemen Turned their flashlights on and went down the stairs then someone quickly ran and they all ran trying to catch them and then he was caught. The next day on the news was some people stealing from a store. The police went there and caught two of them. Later that day the police had a meeting and they decided to put a metal wall underground along the prison fence so no one would be able to dig out. They have also decided to put alarms on the security camera so it will go off if anything like that ever happens again. By the end of the second week they had caught 15 criminals but still had Larry Joe and Kevin Bob on the loose. Four of the police decide to go fly the helicopter and the others will stay on land. Then when they just start to fly they see someone on the highway speeding around cars, they quickly inform the others on and they get in their car and get right to it. The police caught up to the car and turned the sirens on, at once cars were moving to the sides. They got right behind the car but the car would not pull over. One if the police spilled a little bit of oil on the back wheel and the car started spinning to the side. It was Kevin Bob, He runs out and The police go after him, trying to slow him down they throw out a rope connected to the car he trips and gets arrested. Only Larry was left still to catch but the policeman had no sign of him. They went back to the hideout and found a secret map with a line that ended up in a nearby city so they went there. They didn’t see any sign of him so they started to ask some people. Finally someone answered saying they saw him go to the lake so they went, got on the police boat and drove out to look then they saw someone pushing people off a boat they went to get a closer look and found out it was Larry Joe. He had gotten arrested and got put in high security. Larry Joe is now 42 and he will most likely be in jail for the rest of his life.

Part 2 Star Wars Movies - 802 words

My favorite movies are the Star Wars movies because they have so much action and awesome characters. One reason I like Star Wars is because There is more than one or two movies of it so I can watch different ones over and over without watching just one or two of them and getting bored of the same two. Another reason is that they have a lot of cool characters that are really good and special about different things such as Yoda is very good at battling because he can do flips over their heads and is harder to get because he is smaller. Yoda is also good at using the force and he even taught Luke Skywalker when he was still learning. Darth Vader is also a very cool character. He can use the force on people in bad ways and is also really good at using a lightsaber. Something really cool about Star Wars is that they have droids and even some that can talk. The most popular droids are BB-8, C3PO, and R2-D2. Most droids usually help fix or work on things. Star Wars also has three trilogies so if I only wanted to watch the movies from before Luke was born I would watch those three movies. Star Wars has many planets so Darth Vader and his team could be looking on one planet while they are all on a separate planet. The movies are highly detailed with different things. I think two of the best shots in Star Wars were when they were in the garbage shoot and when Anakin was turning to darth Vader by the lava. My favorite trilogy of the movies was probably the original trilogy. I like the original trilogy because the original people are in it and they don’t have too high or too low of technology even though they have more than we do. So they still figure some things out differently. My favorite movie alone is movie number three, The Revenge of The Sith because I like watching Anakin turn into Darth Vader and all of the fighting with lightsabers. Another thing I like about the movie is that Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia are born and you get to see what they look like. The first trilogy was the original one when Luke was just a kid at the beginning and became good pretty fast. The second trilogy was when Anakin was a kid and is on the good side and goes to the dark side turning his back on his wife and Obi Wan Kenobi. In the third trilogy Rey tries to find Luke Skywalker and convinces him to come on their team to win and some of the trilogy one characters die. I like the dark side better than the good because I think they do a lot more fighting and I think that is cool to watch. I also like how they use the force in different ways. My favorite characters are Kylo Ren and Chewbacca. I like Kylo Ren because I like the dark side, his lightsaber is cool, and He turns to the good side at the end. I like Chewbacca because He is a Wookie, He is good at fighting, and He can stay alive for about 400 years. If I had a choice on what team I could be on I would be on the good side because I feel like if I was on the dark side I would probably die because that seems like what happens to everyone in the dark side and I would rather stay alive and help defeat them. If I could be anybody in Star Wars I would be Luke Skywalker because he goes through a good experience of learning what I need to know and then fight for the universe, save the day, and become the greatest Jedi of all time. My two favorite gadgets in Star Wars are the lightsabers because you can fight , block, and destroy things with it. My favorite planet in Star Wars is the Death Star because it has so many cool things about it. One of my favorite things about it is the shield that protects it because it can stop attacks from hitting it unless it is deactivated. If I could do any action scene that was in star wars I would fight with a lightsaber and be on someone's back and do the rope swing. I would do the lightsaber battle because I would love to use a lightsaber and fight, block and destroy and I would like to do the rope swing because it looks fun and it is an awesome action scene. My favorite movies are Star Wars because there is lots of action, tons of amazing characters, and tons of cool things happen.

Part 3 The New Helper Robot - 502 words

Engineers have just finished building astonishing new technology! They just finished building the Helper! The helper is a sphere robot that flies around your house and helps you and all you have to say is “Hey Helper” or tell it to change to something else. If more than one person wants it and yells for the Helper A compartment will open and send out a little bit of a smaller one. After that it will happen two more times. Slowly if you have a smaller one it will grow into normal size and the process can happen over and over again if you need it to. The robot also has a compartment on either side that can come out and become arms to do things with. It also has two compartments on the bottom for legs and this will help it be more stable when lifting or doing something heavy. Whenever it is not getting used it will go to the charging station which comes with it when you get it. The biggest size of this robot is about the size of 3 tennis balls combined. You will never run into it if it is flying around your house because it is either flying higher than you or it will dodge you if it is going to someone. If you are calling for one and there are more than one around your house, the biggest one available will come to you. You can do almost anything with it because each robot has a one day battery life. When no one is using any of them the robots that were smaller will shrink back into its normal size so it will fit. You can play with it and make it do work. It can even get bigger and smaller no matter what it needs to do. Engineers also made it waterproof so it can water the plants or wash the dishes. The Helper can roll, fly, walk, crawl and talk. It knows everything so Helper can even be a teacher! One of the coolest features about the helper is that it can drive. Engineers have been testing it and found out Helper is really good at listening and following directions so it is amazing at making food. If the Helper gets too hot or burns itself it has an automatic cooling system in its body so it will cool off and be fine. If the Helper gets too cold it has an automatic heating system in its body as well. The past couple weeks the engineers have been testing the Helper on different things and
passed all of them. The engineers gave them to a few people to test them out and they said it is awesome that they do not have to mow their lawn because he has a blade and working with all the Helpers inside the Helper can be done in an hour. Soon they will be in tons of houses and be helping people all around the world.
