my student set up their account and when they left and tried to go back into scratch, it said her username was already taken and to create another one. why would this happen

Were they using the login feature?

Make sure they were using the login feature, not the sign up one. If the problem consists, I recommend contacting the Scratch Team through “Contact Us”
