What is a ‘weekly writing exercise’?
The weekly writing exercise is a sort of writing prompt for the members of the main studio.

Here is a list of things you can post in this forum:
- Your response to the prompt
- A prompt idea you have
- Any (friendly) comments or questions about the weekly writing exercise.

Schedules
The other managers and I can discuss what the week's topic will be. If no other managers are active during the decision-making, I will decide myself.
I will try my best to change the exercise every weekend. If I can not get to it in time, please be patient.

*Note to other managers*
You can also post requests or weekly prompts, I am not the only one who is in charge of that.

Rules
-Be kind, always.

- Follow community guidelines

- Use appropriate language.

- You may participate in this if you are not a member of the main studio.
- You may not spread hate or rumors.

- If your response contains sensitive topics please make a disclaimer, censor things, or insert a trigger warning.

Creative Writing Studio Weekly Writing Exercises

M a r c h 『24』- A p r i l 『15』

Hey! As you probably noticed, this weekly writing exercise (now abbreviated as W.W.E.) is a bit longer than a week. The first few will be so that members can slowly ease into it. So, including today, you have 10 days to complete the W.W.E. Anyways, here's the W.W.E.!

This week's W.W.E.

This week's W.W.E. is all about character development. You need to create a character with a very deep and developed backstory. For certain characters, it is better if their backstory is unknown or is unraveled as time goes one. You need at least 150 words about your new (or old) character's backstory. If you have any questions go to the bottom of my post and find the ‘quote’ button. Then just type your question! I'll try to answer it as soon as possible. Also, if you go to ‘follow discussion’ at the top of the page, it will notify you when I respond!

I look forward to reading your responses!

For certain characters, it is better if their backstory is unknown or is unraveled as time goes one. You need at least 350 words about your new character's backstory. Hello! Just a quick question. Should the backstory be introduced like in the story itself, or should I just write the backstory out?(ex. she was born in May. Her parents died in a fire.)
Just wondering!

It does not need to be introduced through a story, it will just be the backstory.

Got it! Thanks for the quick answer. Now I just have to decide which of the numerous characters to choose!

Nyx was born to Wilma and James Hart. When she was young, she was weak. Her parents worked for a spy agency of elite spies. One day, her parents were kidnapped by enemy agents and were never found again. Nyx was not taken along with them because she was weak. Since then, she tried her hardest to be tough and strong. After her parents went off the grid, and old woman who owned a candy shop saw her sitting alone at the park. She took the young girl to her candy shop where she lived happily for quite some time. One day, the candy shop closed down due to financial issues. The woman could no longer care for Nyx. She found a spy agency, full of evil spies. She took Nyx to the spy agency and promised the agents there that if they kept her safe here at the school, she would offer her old candy shop as a shelter if it was ever needed.

The character I chose for this exercise is from a novel I started and never finished. (I will finish it someday! Hopefully.)

Samantha Washington is a homeschooled girl, who is fifteen years old. She was born on February 22, 2005 during a tragic time in her mother, Peggy’s life. A month earlier, a car accident had taken Thomas, Samantha’s father’s life. Contrary to everyone’s belief that Samantha would have a sheltered life because of the accident, her Mom taught her skills that many deemed unsafe, such as using a saw and ax, lighting a campfire, and rock climbing.
When Samantha was 10, she received a copy of My Side of the Mountain her dad had owned. She was hooked and wanted to be just like Sam, the main character. Therefore she proceeded to beg her Mother to allow her to enroll in a survival course. Peggy did a lot of searching, but finally Samantha was registered in a Survival and Camping class taught by two sisters. After five years of training in the course, Samantha’s mom surprised her with the promise of a two week camping trip in the Catskills. Samantha was overjoyed and promptly asked if they could go to REI to get supplies….

Hiya! I hope it’s not too late, but I’m planning on starting this as soon as I can.
