Don't ban fun!

Us forumers put in the grind to help the Scratch Community over here in our own time, whether it is answering questions from scratchers, having constructive discussions in suggestions to help the developers of the site, reporting bugs for the developers or helping scratchers with their projects. We deserve a break for 2 days after our tireless work, and not to mention the reasoning is not the best. It was sadly just a small minority who spammed last year and with newer forumers hearing about last year circumstances, I doubt it will happen again.

This sounds harsh but I am sure people can figure out that it is not a normal day in the forums when asking for help, and we need a break, do we now have to start assisting people on our only break of the year, just because a few people need help? We give enough help throughout the year. Honestly.

Edit: Oh, and the Scratch Team do not have to clear up and dustbin joke topics. They did not in previous years, and what harm did that do lying about? It was just the spam, not the jokes, from what I remember the Scratch Team overreacted and cleared out way more than they should have done.

I wouldn’t say I agree with that. It’s our choice to forum and we aren’t really working for Scratch or anything, just trying to help out. Personally, I forum to help people and to practice my formal writing skills.
Doesn't matter if we were doing this voluntarily or not, we make the job of ST much easier and saves a lots of their time and money, but what do we get in return? They wouldn't even let us use the forums to have some fun on April Fool's day! ST says it wastes their time cleaning up the topics, but they should also remember that we forumers save them way more time in moderation and customer support than we waste on April Fool's day.

Exactly! We helped the Scratch community for free and we at least do deserve to have some fun in return.

What if… there's a temporary sticky1 in each forum, of which are dedicated to April Fools? When April Fools is over, all you have to do is just close or dustbin it. Solves the ST having to clean up a lot and still lets us have our fun.

1: Either it is permanently stickied and just closed and reopened accordingly or just is unstickied afterwards. It could be dustbinned, too.

3 forum tips for experienced forumers (in no particular order):
  1. If you are reporting a new forumer's topic to be closed, or moved to another forum, don't mention it, because then, the topic creator will think they will receive either an alert or a block.

  2. New forumers won't immediately know the rules or terminology of the forums. I have seen this happen hundreds of times (exaggeratedly), especially when experienced forumers (I won't name any) tell new forumers that they are "necroposting", which is when someone posts on an old and resolved topic (especially in the Questions about Scratch forum), causing said topic to be moved to the front page of that forum.

  3. Using Scratchblocks as a writing style is not blockspam, unless it is not relevant to the discussion. For example, this

    ExampleScratcher1 wrote:

How do I make a smooth gliding animation?
    when green flag clicked
    repeat until <(my question) = [answered]>
ask [How do I make a smooth gliding animation?] and wait
    end
    say [Thank you!]
    is not blockspam, but these

    ExampleScratcher2 (first post) wrote:

    when green flag clicked
    move (58) steps
play sound [Stock Laughter Sound Effect HD - 1 Hour v]
    forever
play sound [Stock Screaming Sound Effect HD - 1 Hour v]
    switch backdrop to [internet v]
say [i broke the internet] for (2) secs
    turn cw (15) degrees
    go to [nearby restaurant v]
    next costume
    end

    ExampleScratcher2 (second post) wrote:

    when green flag clicked
    repeat until <(out of dorito's) = [true]>
    broadcast [eat dorito chip v]
    end
say [IM OUT OF DORITO'S!!!!!!!!! :(]
play sound [Scream2 v] until done
    forever
    turn cw (120) degrees
    play sound [Scream2 v]
play sound [we have no dorito's sorry v]
    end
are blockspam, and must be reported.

It is often not a good idea to protest the Scratch Team´s choices because most of them are for our own good, there as probably a big issue and much consideration before they decided that.

My personal opinion on banning the April Fools event is this;

It is important that the Scratch Team allows April Fools joke topics, but never encouraged them. An example of a better joke topic composes of the post being constructive, whilst centralizing on a comedic subject; treating it like it was a serious subject. I do agree that posting spam (in this context, posting incoherable content) on April fools should not be discouraged, but removed as it breaks the guidelines. Some 2021 April fools topics abide by the guidelines (like this one) and should not be considered spam.

The Scratch Team should have limited the April fools topic in the first place, by stating what I said above.

I disagree, April fool's topic should be encouraged because:

I do not think that spam should be encouraged; it will just set a bad role model on the ST.

I don't think an activity that is severely disruptive can be counted as fun.

I also don't think it's appropriate to justify being severely disruptive on April Fool's Day just because you were helping others on the forums (that's kind of a shallow reason to be helping others anyway).

I also think you can still find fun using studios and projects for April Fool's Day.

Sadly, my forum signature was eaten by an evil kumquat.
