Weekly #1

Weekly Part 1: Character Voices
Design 2 characters, focus on their personalities and how it affects voices. Then write a dialogue between the two characters. 200 words

Aurora frantically typed on her computer's holographic keyboard. “How do I complete this?”
“Bruh, let me see that,” Jordan said as he slid over to Aurora's keyboard and started clicking the buttons. “Dude, this game, like, impossible!”
“Hm…” Aurora said, taking back her keyboard. “Well first you need to change the DPI for this game to work, then you need to spam these buttons at the same time, and then you need to look at specific details in the backgrounds, and that will help you defeat the boss, and-”
“Okay, extreme overload of information over here. Can we just, like, play the game without getting all complicated?”
“But that strategy actually works! I'm on level 50 for a reason.”
“But how come you haven't, like, beat this level yet? And you said that level 50 was easy.”
“Uh…because this level is obviously harder than level 50, duh,” Aurora replied. "If you think you're WAAAY better at me in this game, why don't you go ahead and try?“
”Thanks, and I'll beat it before the boss will, like, loose a single life when you play it,“ Jordan added as he slid in front of the keyboard.
”Yeah, riiiight,"Aurora said.

Word Count: 200

Weekly Part 2: Character Motivations
Take the two characters from before: It’s time to refine their motivations and plan out a character arc. Write a 500 word scene depicting a turning point for your character - maybe their motivations change, or an event kickstarts their character arc. Such turning points are often important in a story.

The minute the lunch bell rung, Aurora sprinted to the lunch line as fast as she could as if it would be her last lunch. Even though she was a fast runner, she managed to slide in near the front behind a few very tall 9th graders.
The food was the same old boring food. She wished you could use magic to change food, but Transfiguration Law #69 states that you can't do that. Stupid magic laws. She wished she could do any magic she wanted. She could, kind of. Aurora had a different way of doing magic than others, but she preferred not to let anyone know. The Government would probably lock her up or kill her or something really bad because of it.
“Hurry up!” yelled a someone. “We're all waiting to eat!” Aurora turned around to see this kid from her

Take the last thing one of your family members or friends said (if you can’t remember, go talk to them!) and write a story out of it. Get creative with this! Maybe you talked about what you’re eating for dinner? Perhaps you’ll write about your characters making this dish and completely ruining it! 500 words for 800 points.

Have you ever had a strange dream? Dreams can be one of our best sources of inspiration. Now it’s your turn to take these dreams of yours- flush them out, and write a short excerpt on it. (If you never remember your dreams, look up “bizarre writing prompts”.) 600 words for 700 points! 200 additional points if you share your writing!

So, I had this dream where aliens turns Earth into this sand dune planet. The characters are these boys in my classes who aren't even my friends, but they acted like my friends in the dream. So, they're friends in my writing.

“C'mon guys!” Belle said, trying to hurry up her friends slow walking to the school. “We're going to be late for school at this pace!”
"We're definitely NOT going to be late to school. It's literally 7 in the MORNING! And school starts at 8:20,“ Ryder added.
”Hm…my watch says 8:00. And I seem to remember that today was daylight savings,“ Davis said, glancing at his watch.
”But my watch is a DIGITAL watch!“ Ryder replied.
”But, that doesn't mean you don't need to turn it ahead," Michael said.

November 9th, 2021

Main Cabin Daily
Write a SWC Fanfic, 600 words.

Hermione was excited. Today was the day she was going to get a letter in the mail! Not just any letter, her SWC sorting letter!
“What's SWC?” Hermione had asked when Starry, her best friend, mailed her sign up form to the SWC Sorting Council.
“'What's SWC?!'” Starry replied. “YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT SWC IS!!”
“Hey, chill, Star. What's wrong with me not knowing what SWC is?” Hermione said, slightly backing away from her raging friend.
Starry took a deep breath, she didn't mean to get that excited over that small thing. “SWC stands for Scratch Writing Camp. It's this summer camp you go to and you get to write stuff and get points! I've done it before, and it's the funnest summer camp ever! You should sign up, too! It would be fun to do it together. Maybe we could request to be in the same cabin!”
Star printed out a sign up sheet for Hermione, and a few days later, Hermione sent her application to the SWC Sorting Council.

Hermione's hands were shaking when she took hold of a light brown envelope with the SWC logo on the seal. The carefully slid out a piece of paper read the typed font:

Dear Hermione,

Thank you for applying for this Scratch Writing Camp session. You have been sorted into Fanfiction cabin. Your leader is Mac, and your co-leaders are Mia and Rockie. To count your words, you will be in Mia's word count group.

Our bus will meet you at your house a tomorrow, and you will meet your cabin and get your cabin T-shirt.

Have a great time,
Your SWC Hosts

A few moments later, Starry texted Hermione telling her that she was in Fan-fi AND she was in Mia's word count group! Hermione couldn't have been more excited!

Writing Competition
Max word count: 2000
(NOTE: These are scenes from a story/book series I am creating, this is not the whole thing. I only added my favorite scenes and the important parts. Also, Earl Warren Middle School is a real middle school in Solana Beach, California, United States of America, just in case you don't know.)

The Call of the Messenger
By Hermione

Chapter 1
EMMA
Word Count: 531

Finally, Emma thought while hovering to the bus stop on her blue one-of-a-kind hoverboard. Middle School. After one whole stressing and completely boring and useless year of Elementary School.
Emma was familiar with Del Mar, she knew every street and where every building was and what the building was for. She had a whole map of the city memorized in her head. Emma took a left turn on a intersection, crossed the street so she was facing traffic, took another left turn, then a right turn, and walked until she was in front of a small bookstore with a bus stop placed right in front of it.
The bookstore was a small thing, with a pretty display of popular books and books that had won the coolest looking cover and whatnot. The shop had been there for a long time, and according to the owner of the store, it had been Liber family for over 50 years!
“Hey, Emma,” said Wyatt, one of her friends, as she hovered to a stop at the bus stop.
“Hey,” she replied as she turned her hoverboard into a skateboard by dropping it on the ground. “Excited for middle school?”
“Yeah,” said Michael. “Earl Warren looks cool.”
"And it probably is cool,“ Jake added. ”What are all your guy's schedules?“
They all dug into their backpacks and examined each other's schedules. Occasionally they would make fun of a teacher or a period with a class someone get.
”Are you all ready for the All Star game after school against Solana Beach?“ Noah asked, changing the subject to their baseball game.
”Of course!“ Chase answered. ”I literally came to school in full uniform, even my cleats!“ The Del Mar Little League All Stars uniform was simple, white with the red Del Mar LL logo, and a blue hat with the same logo.
”We have to beat Solana Beach. If we beat them, then we'll win the district or region or whatever it's called,“ Emma said.
”Okay everyone,“ Michael said with a smile, turning his LA Dodgers baseball hat backwards and leaning the side of the bus stop. ”Let's prep for a long very inspirational pep from our amazing team captain, Emma.“
”All I literally said is that we need to win, not some long pep talk,“ Emma defended, snatching Michael's hat from his head and putting it on backwards on top of her blue Boston Red Sox hat.
So inspirational,“ Livio added. ”I'm going to cry of happiness.“
”Oh, shut up,“ Emma said, taking Livio's hat and tossing it to Michael. He took the hat and put it sideways on his curly brown hair.
”Hey!“ Livio said, reaching for his hat. ”Give me my hat back, Michael.“
”Only if Emma gives back my hat,“ Michael replied.
”No! I'm never going to give back your hat!“ Emma answered.
”Too bad,“ Chase said, sneaking up from behind Emma and taking the hat, then handing it to Michael.
”Nooo! How dare you take the hat away from me, Chase!" Emma dramatically said.
There was a sequence of loud honks, and a screech of breaks, and the bus stopped at the stop.
“C'mon guys,” Michael said, hopping onto the bus.

Chapter 2
MICHAEL
Word Count 380

Michael thought that his first day at Earl Warren wasn't that bad. Not bad at all, except that they had to wait a few weeks before going surfing in Surf PE. The only actual bad thing was that Emma had disappeared right after they got off the bus. Like, almost EXACTLY after. Everyone was completely freaking out, because it was un-Emma-like to just disappear without a reason or telling someone. Okay, maybe she did have a reason, but she ALWAYS tells someone her reason. Emma showed up a few minutes before the transition bell, which was also un-Emma-like, and with some weird girl named Annabelle who was supposed to be her aunt's friend's cousin from London. But, Annabelle didn't even have a British accent.
The one thing Michael actually was looking forwards to was the baseball game. It was the final, life-or-death deciding game against Solana Beach All-Stars, and Del Mar HAD to win. The series was tied, which made this game even MORE stressful. Everyone was counting on the captain of the team, Emma, to not fail. Even Earl Warren had made a little league baseball field on their lower field just for the game.

“Okay, people,” said Coach, rounding up the whole team. “It took you 10 minutes to change, I expect you to do better.” Some players smiled, others looked down at their cleats. “Okay, warm-up time. Everyone, run 4 laps around the track. Whoever gets first place gets bragging rights, no cookies or donuts.”
Everyone started racing around the track, but Michael already knew who was going to win.
“S'up, Emma,” Michael said as they jogged to the front of the team.
“Nothing much,” Emma replied. “Look, Solana Beach's running the track, too.” Twelve more players with black Solana Beach Little League uniforms were gaining ground on Emma and Michael's lead.
“Hey, Michael,” said a voice from behind them. “Didn't know you were on Del Mar.”
“How could you NOT notice,” Emma pitched in. “We've literally played MULTIPLE games against you.”
“I didn't know Michael then, though,” said the boy, who Michael recognized was Sean. “Wait, Emma, your team captain?” Sean must have noticed the red “C” on Emma's jersey.
“Bruh, she's always been captain. You're captain, too, Sean,” Michael said.
“Good luck, Del Mar,” Sean said as they finished their four laps. “But we're going to win anyways.”
“Or not,” Emma muttered, so quiet only Michael could hear.

Chapter 3
SEAN
Word Count: ___

Last inning, Sean thought as he ran to his position at shortstop. Well, hopefully. The game was tied, 0 - 0, which was good and bad. Solana Beach's defense was great, but Del Mar just wouldn't let any hit. Especially their captain, Emma. She was their star pitcher, and kept on striking everyone out with some sort of pitch that was a mix of a fastball, curveball, sinker, and slider. It was impossible to hit, probably even more impossible than a knuckeball.

The first two plays went quick, one strikeout,

Hermione's SWC Stuff - November 2021

Weekly #4

Part One: A Little Inspiration
Think back through your time this SWC, and all the great conversations and discussions you’ve had and seen. Think of a conversation/exchange that you found particularly entertaining (perhaps people from different cabins got hilariously patriotic?). It can have been in a cabin, a hangout studio or the main cabin. You don’t have to have been involved in the thread either!

Now, write a 500 word story that features / takes inspiration from that comment thread! Perhaps your story imagines an alternate context to the exchange or presents some playful semi roleplay as if it is happening in real life. Remember that you don’t have to follow to the exchange word for word (or even include it at all - perhaps you see a riveting conversation about frogs and decide to write about an epic dance battle between the leaders over whether frogs are better than the hosts!!!)

Part Two: Setting the Scene!
The leaders have spent loads of time planning out the theme of their cabins. Take a look around at all of the cabins, and pick a cabin whose theme you really like - it doesn’t have to be your own! Taking inspiration from the aesthetic of that cabin, write a scene of at least 300 words.

Perhaps you could write what it’s like to live in that world, or change up the setting based on your interpretation of the aesthetic! The possibilities are endless.

Part Three: Your cabin
This task will focus on your cabin, specifically! See the opening passage in your cabin’s description? Your task is simple - to take that passage and continue it!

Make sure to focus on the people you've met in your cabin- how are their personalities? Calm or chaotic? Laid back or more serious? You could also add people outside of your cabin in your continuation and how they would interact in this world presented in the cabin description.

Write at least 300 words for this part.

Part Four: The Last Hurrah
Now, write a one thousand word SWC fanfiction! There will be no guidance here- feel free to do anything, anything that is an SWC fanfiction. The only requirement is it must be at least 1000 words. You can take inspiration from previous parts of this weekly, but you must write 1000 new words for this task. (For instance, if you decided to include your epic 500 word dance battle in this final fanfiction, your total word count for this part would need to be 1500 - 1000 new words and 500 old ones.)

Requirements
To receive 5000 points (!!!) for your cabin, comment in the main cabin that you have completed your weekly with links to the following proof:
The scene you wrote taking inspiration through a comment thread (part 1), which must be at least 500 words
The scene you wrote using a cabin aesthetic (part 2), which must be at least 300 words
A scene continuing your cabin’s description (part 3), which must be at least 300 words
A sweet, final SWC fanfiction (part 4), which must be at least 1000 words
