They do. They make it so that, even if a word is not in the title, the project will show up if someone searches that word. However, you might not find too much of a difference because if it is a popular word the project will show up many pages down.

Yes, they do work.

These are keywords that make it easier for people to find your project. For example, when you search for the word “trending” on the search box, you'll see a lot of projects that don't have trending in their title. But these have #trending in the notes and credits. If you make a project about cats, you can include #cats in the notes and credits.

Also, The Trending page (Explore) has multiple categories like Animations, Art, etc. These are identified using the same hashtags. If you create an animation, you can add #animation in the notes and credits. If the project gets on trending, you'll also be able to see it in the animations tab.
