What happens when someone quotes an existing post, or a post by someone who doesn't use BBCode?

I'd argue markdown is actually less readable.

I don't see a point in this. Maybe it's confusing for people who haven't used it before but we have the buttons and we can also preview our posts to see what we've done, meaning new scratchers can test out their stuff without harming anyone.
