Option to Disable Webcam Feature

I saw StevetheiPads post on having no webcam and it reminded me of how, nowadays, the news puts everywhere about the people spying on you through your webcam, and even though it sounds farfetched to me, some schools and parents might not want kids play 2.0 games because they're afraid of that stuff. I think somewhere on the website there should be an option to disable your webcam, because it might make some people less panicked about webcams.

I am pretty sure that that block is not even part of main stream scratch yet, but is a work in progress (i could not find it anywhere), and if it was, there is no way that a scratch game can transmit images from a webcam to be stored, or viewed. (until Cloud variables support pictures)

You have to opt in (ie turn on that feature) for web cams in the flash player for it to even work.

You are much more likely to be spied on when you are browsing other website, than when using scratch*, so global solution: unplug or turn of your webcam. Simples.

* all scratch projects are open source, so you will be able to see if you are being spied on.

Actually, it is. You're just looking in the wrong place. Look in sensing for “video motion.” It will be a reporter(number value) block.

This project uses it: http://beta.scratch.mit.edu/projects/10041146/

Then again, you might not count the 2.0 Beta as “main stream Scratch…”

Oh, yeah, and the stage also has video options. Look under “looks.”

Thanks for the ride, Scratch Team and community! Unfortunately, the time has come for me to move on from Scratch, so I'll no longer be using the forums. Thanks again, and farewell!

Cloud variables can actually collect image data and using a very long process, I was able to collect image data from the video sensor and store it in cloud variables. I haven't posted this project because doing this is not allowed on Scratch, even if it takes ten days just to take one image and send it. I might be able to post it in the future, but the posted project wouldn't work using cloud.

Your web browser can block the camera function on all websites so this isn't necessary.

That just seems too lengthy to do any harm. If anyone were to try and do something nefarious with it, I'm pretty sure “project that uses webcam and cloud variables that does something for a very long time” is a dead giveaway and no one would just sit there and let it do its thing.
