If Ashfur were good (an AU)

Wishful-Thinking wrote:

There he lies.

He could try to escape- that is, if all his bones weren't shattered, and he wasn't already dizzy from the pain and the smoke suffocating him.
But he doesn't care anymore.
All he cares about is if his friends are safe.

It was a beautiful summers day, and Ashfur woke up with a yawn and a stretch, ready to start his day by looking at Squirrelflight' s beautiful sleeping form and putting him in high spirits for the rest of the day. He looked over at her nest, and..
It's empty?
'Huh. She didn't tell me she was on an early patrol.' Ashfur muttered, walking out of the den, his spirits slightly dampened. He looked around the camp, seeing it was mostly empty. near the fresh kill pile, he saw Cloudtail and Brightheart bathing in the golden rays of the rising sun together, nuzzling each other affectionately. He laughed softly to himself, his cheeks flushing a bright red as he imagined him and Squirrelflight replacing Cloudtail and Brightheart.
Then, he heard a bright, cheerful giggle from the opposite side of the camp. His ears jolted up and his whole face brightening and his eyes finding the source of the beautiful sound.
It was Squirrelflight! There she was, sat..
Sat there..
With.. with Brambleclaw…
Nuzzling each other affectionately… Brambleclaw giving her ear the occasional lick…
The golden rays of light turned into piercing, stone cold daggers, digging into his fur.
The whole world seemed to have gone grey
And right in the middle of it.. her fur, standing out so vibrantly red.. so beautiful.. her fluffy, round cheeks, flushed, and her emerald green eyes sparkling with joy…
A single tear rolled down Ashfur's face, and he silently turned back to the den, curling into a ball and silently crying himself back to sleep.

'Hey!! Hey, wake up, sleepy head!!'
Ashfur jolted up from his nest, his face filled with joy at the familiar voice.. and then his heart instantly crashed down to his paws when he saw Brambleclaw, happily stood behind Squirrelflight.
So it wasn't a dream, then.
Ashfur ran out of the den without saying a single word to Squirrelflight. He felt angry, betrayed.. hurt..
But.. why?
He stopped beside the lake, staring at his reflection in the water.
Why did he feel betrayed?
She had no reason to love him back.
He narrowed his eyes at the sun, holding back tears.
She had no reason to love him.
'It's selfish of me to hate her for loving him.' He whispered to himself.
The perfect image of his own face reflected in the icy blue water was warped by the drip of a tear.
Ashfur watched his reflection dance in the water, ripples of blue making his face fade in and out of focus.
His reflection. Being warped.
Just as he would be, if he continued thinking this way.
He jumped up from his spot beside the lake, running back to camp. When he arrived back there, Squirrelflight was worriedly talking to Brambleclaw. When she saw him enter the camp, she sprung up, her eyes filled with concern.
'Ashfur! Where did you go? Are you ok? I didn't upset you, did I?'
Ashfur was silent for a moment, before muttering a very quiet ‘no. I’m sorry, Squirrelflight, it's not your fault.' He miserably walked back to his den. Squirrelflight curled up next to him, trying to comfort him. For a moment, Ashfur blushed, and pretended they were mates… but he instantly snapped himself out of it.
If she was happy with Brambleclaw, he had absolutely no reason to interfere. ‘It’s her life, not mine. I don't make her decisions for her.' He thought to himself.

A few moons later, Ashfur was happily eating some prey with Squirrelflight and Brambleclaw. A few weeks ago, he'd noticed that Whitewing had feelings for him. He doubted she could have possibly liked him as much as he liked Squirrelflight, (since she had quickly moved on to Birchfall, once she realized Ashfur didn't like her back) but it really got him thinking. Even if Whitewing HAD loved him as much as he loves Squirrelflight.. he never would have been her mate, as he did not have feelings for her at all. It would have been.. cruel, almost. To mate with someone.. perhaps even have kits.. with a cat he never actually loved, while he secretly swoons over some other cat. Ashfur shook his head as he thought about it. He really did love Squirrelflight- but
love means you CARE about the cat. Ashfur cared deeply for Squirrelflight, and would NEVER want to put her in that situation.
So he sat and forced a laugh at Brambleclaw' s dumb joke, just to see Squirrelflight' s face light up in joy.
At least she was happy.
Later, in the dead of night, Ashfur was just about to head to the dirtplace, when he heard a gentle sobbing from the nest near him. He looked down in shock and concern to see Squirrelflight' s tiny body, shaking as she cried. Ashfur gently shook her, and led her out of the camp, while she just miserably followed him. When they were by the lake, he looked up at her, bis blue eyes shimmering in the moonlight.
'Squirrelflight, what's wrong? Did somebody hurt you?' The thought of Brambleclaw upsetting her in any way filled him with a boiling fury, but he shoved it deep down inside of him.
'I.. N… nobody hurt me, Ashfur, it's just…' Squirrelflight was hit with a fresh wake of tears, and Ashfur comfortingly pulled her against him, stroking her soft fur.
'shhhh… it's ok, Squirrelflight..' he whispered. She looked up at him, her eyes seemingly more beautiful than ever, filled with a flurry of emotions that Ashfur couldn't even begin to decipher.
'Squirrelflight. You're my best friend, and I'm yours. If friends are for anything.. it's for comforting each other, right? Please, tell me what's wrong, and if you want, I won't tell a soul. But this is clearly something you need to get off your chest.'
Squirrelflight looked at him, desperately trying to figure out what to do. Ashfur just watched, patiently waiting, stroking her tiny white paw comfortingly. Finally, Squirrelflight forced, through gritted teeth, ‘Leafpool’s having kits.'
Ashfur stared at her silently for a moment, and then laughed cheerfully. ‘Oh Squilf, that’s the dumbest thing I've ever-' but he stopped dead when he saw the serious fear in her eyes. He let out a shaky gasp. He had figured out what comes next, but didn't want it to be true.
'She wants me to raise them. Pretend they're mine.' She whispered, her voice shaky and terrified, as if she were going to die tonight for letting lose this information.
Ashfur and Squirrelflight sat in silence for minutes, staring at their reflections in the water. Finally, Ashfur broke the silence.
'Have you told Brambleclaw?'
Squirrelflight's fur stood on end, and she looked at Ashfur, her eyes terrified and filling with tears.
'I can't, Ashfur. He wants to be deputy, I.. He'll tell Firestar, and then.. and then Leafpool.. won't be able to be a medicine cat anymore.. and.. and..' Ashfur shoved a paw onto Squirelflight's mouth to silence her.
'Squirrelflight.' He said, his voice serious and his eyes piercing into her. ‘Love. Is such an incredibly powerful thing. It’s more powerful than any desire, because it IS your greatest desire, to keep your loved ones safe, and to die just to see them smile.' Silent tears fell down Ashfur's face. ‘Trust me, Squirrelflight, I know what love is. I know what it’s like to put your own wants and even needs aside, just to make the one you love happy. And Brambleclaw loves you too, very much. He would never think about becoming deputy before thinking about your happiness. Brambleclaw is such a kind, noble warrior- I bet, as soon as you tell him about Leafpool, his first words will be ‘how can I help?’ But you can't keep secrets from him, especially not one this big. You need to trust each other.'
Squirrelflight Started crying again, and hugged Ashfur. ‘oh, you’re not mad at all, are you? Why though? Are you not upset that-'
Suddenly, it clicked.
All he had said about being able to push anything aside just to see the one you love happy..
even the warrior code he had been raised by..
'Ashfur.. do… do you.. love me?'
Ashfur half expected the question, and laughed softly. ‘Yes, Squirrelflight, I do. Very much. But I’d rather see you happy with Brambleclaw than see you miserable with me.'
With that, he stood up, heading back to camp.
'I'd get some rest if I were you.' He called as He walked away. ‘tomorrow’s gonna be a long day.'

When Ashfur awoke, he felt strangely.. at peace. He'd grown so used to waking up every morning with a dull feeling of pain in his chest when remembered how he was never going to be Squirrelflight's mate, but today… it didn't seem to be there anymore. He wondered… was it finally confessing his feelings, instead of bottling it up inside?
Or was it the excitement for the new kits Squirrelflight was going to raise?
He saw that both of the cat's nests were empty, so after quickly scanning the camp and failing to see the bright red pelt next to the brown one, he leapt into the woods, listening very closely to his surroundings. Finally, he heard Brambleclaw's voice. It was it's usual smooth, silky, calming tone, but it was clear that he was crying. Ashfur walked into the bush they were hiding in, and Brambleclaw wiped his eyes as quick as a flash, instantly starting the middle of a conversation with Squirrelflight about the best hunting strategies. Squirrelflight was about to tell Brambleclaw that Ashfur already knew, but Ashfur narrowed her eyes, his eyes saying everything. ‘we’ll use this as a test.'
'Hey, Brambleclaw, can I have a word?'
Brambleclaw's fur stood slightly on end, but he reluctantly followed Ashfur without complaint, flashing one last worried glance at Squirrelpaw.
'Firestar asked for any news on the shadowclan border, after Birchfall and Berrynose got told of for stealing prey.'
Brambleclaw was dead silent for a moment. He seemed to be fighting an extreme mental battle.
'Is there anything you would like me to report to him, Brambleclaw?'
Brambleclaw's suddenly opened, calmer than ever before. He had made his decision.
Ashfur and Squirrelflight both held their breaths and time seemed to stand still.
Finally, after what felt like an eternity, Brambleclaw replied.
'No, I have nothing to report to Firestar. The shadowclan borders were just as ghastly as usual.'
Ashfur was so incredibly pleased. Brambleclaw had even forced a laugh onto the end of his sentence!
'Good. Thunderclan warriors are loyal, which means no keeping secrets. But sometimes,' He gestured over to Squirrelflight, who was now sobbing from joy and relief, ‘need to be kept if you can ever wish to be called loyal.’ he winked at Brambleclaw, and Brambleclaw stood there in shock as it dawned on him that Ashfur already know about this, and was just testing him. He smiled.
'I'm glad you care about her. It's good for her to have a friend like you.' Brambleclaw said to Ashfur, and Ashfur smiled sadly to himself as he walked away.
'Friend'.
He'd finally accepted that word.

It was a slightly cloudier day than usual, but that didn't bother the two as they laughed about whatever came to their mind. Brambleclaw was on patrol, and Squirrelflight's three beautiful adopted children, Hollyleaf, Lionblaze and Jayfeather, were in their own little group doing their own thing, so Ashfur was left alone with Squirrelflight, both of them giggling like children. ‘I’m gonna go get Leafpool, she NEEDS to hear this.' Ashfur spluttered while Squirrelflight doubled back in laughter at one of her own jokes. Suddenly, while he was walking away, a single raindrop landed on his nose. He looked up, surprised, only to have his whole face drenched in a fresh torrent of rain. He jumped at a close grumble of thunder, and then let out a yelp when he saw a tree get struck with lightning. He watched in horror as fiery snakes wrapped around the trunk of the tree, falling almost directly in front of him. He looked up, and saw that the tree was blocking his way to Squirrelflight and the children. As fast as his legs could carry him, he ran out of the camp, and around to the back of it, where Squirrelflight and the three were escaping the quickly burning camp. He saw that they seemed to be handling it just fine, and was about to leave to help some other cats, when he saw the three jump onto the top of the cliff, and then instantly a tree fell, surrounding them in a ring of fire. They couldn't go back- they'd fall to their deaths. They couldn't go forward- they'd burn. Ashfur didn't even give himself time to wait until Squirrelflight started pulling another fallen tree towards the fire- he just ran, terrified that if he was even a second too late, everyone he loved would die. When he finally got there, Squirrelflight was desperately trying to push the fallen tree into the fire, to create a bridge for her children to walk across.
'Ashfur!! Please.. help me push this log to make a bridge for them!!'
Ashfur didn't even pause to think, he just pushed the log. Ashfur ran into the center of the circle of fire with the three, and started pushing them out, desperate and terrified. The first two were out.
Safe.
Now it was just Jayfeather, who He'd stayed behind with so He could help him cross the log. He turned around, about to lead Jayfeather out, when his face morphed into one of horror.
Jayfeather had gotten stuck.
He had somehow wandered into a stray bramble, and was nearly hanging off the edge of the cliff, trying desperatly to tug himself free.
Ashfur heard a crack.
Without a moments hesitation, he leapt over to Jayfeather and bit through the brambles, his adrenaline making him have an extra boost of strength, added to the fact that he was already a pretty skilled warrior. He grabbed Jayfeather by the scruff of the neck and flung him further away from the edge.
He was about to leap uf and follow him, but it was too late.
The edge of the cliff cracked off, and down he fell.
The last thing he saw was Hollyleaf's terrified face as she crossed the bridge to help her brother.
That filled him with joy.
At least they're safe.

and now, there he lies.
Helpless as the fire closes in on him.
He could try to escape- but what's the use? He's already saved the ones who he cares about..
His died a true, noble, warrior death.
He saved a life, in the cost of his own.

SPOILER WARNING FOR THE NEW BOOKS ⚠️Wow I love this story but one thing. This would change the entire course of warriors from Hollyleaf never leaving my to Ashfur not posesing Bramble claw right now (sorry if I spoiled that) but it is awesome especially since Ashfur be one of my favs!

“He would always argue, you know. Even when he was an apprentice. If I wanted to hunt near Snakerocks, he would complain that Fourtrees was better. Well, it's about time he learned he can't always have his own way.” - Dustpelt, referring to Ashfur
If only Ashfur had learned this lesson sooner, then this AU could have been canon :'(
