"One Ring to Rule the Worlds" - A KOTLC, Unwanteds, and LOTR Fanfiction by @The_Little_Halfling
“One Ring to Rule the Worlds” written by @The_Little_Halfling
Welcome! I'm Halfling, or Half! You can call me whichever your prefer! I've started writing “One Ring to Rule the Worlds” lately, and I wanted to share it with all of you. I'm going to be posting chapters every so often for all of you to read. However, I'd like to give you a quick introduction to the characters and plot of the story!
“One Ring to Rule the Worlds”
Characters:
-“Keeper of the Lost Cities” by Shannon Messenger
-Sophie Foster
-Fitz Vacker
-Biana Vacker
-Keefe Sencen
-Dex Dizzinee
-Various members of the Neverseen
-“The Unwanteds” by Lisa McMann
-Alexander Stowe
-Lani Haluki
-Samheed Burkesh
-Simber
-Florence
-references to Mr. Today
-Eagala
-Pan
-Possibly Aaron Stowe (post Island of Graves)
-“The Lord of the Rings” by J. R. R. Tolkien
-Frodo Baggins
-Samwise Gamgee
-Pippin Took
-Merry Brandybuck
-Aragorn
-Gandalf
-Sauron (more like references, but whatever)
-Lord Elrond
-possibly the rest of the Fellowship, but most likely not.
Please keep in mind that this is a fan-fiction, so none of the characters belong to me.
Plot: Alex and Sophie's crews are mysteriously transported into Middle Earth. Seeking shelter and a way back home, the teenagers stumble upon Bag End. Frodo takes them in for the night, but isn't ready for what Gandalf proposes. (sorry that was a really vague description)
Just some general information:
-I will try to keep the fan-fiction canon. If I write something that is NOT true, please nicely tell me and I will address why I wrote it the way I did. If you find an error, please let me know so I can edit it <3
-Fanart and theories ARE encouraged. Feel free to post your own comments in the forum. It's a discussion platform – its what its for XD.
-Please don't spoil the real books. I am trying hard not to give away the plots of the real books, though some key details will be divulged. I'm going to address this below.
-Have fun!!!
-Please don't rush me! I'm a busy girl, so things might take a while! I'll try to be quick about updates though!!
-Chapters are pretty short; I'm trying to lengthen them as I go on, but since I switch views so many times, it only made sense to make them shorter. Your feedback would be amazing!
Lastly, this IS fan-fiction, so it is somewhat based off the books. These are the books you should have read up to, if you plan on reading these series.
Keeper of the Lost Cities: Legacy. (Her backstory is somewhat explained, and I don't want to give too much away)
The Unwanteds: Island of Graves (The book is supposed to take place in supplement to Island of Dragons, in a way. I suggest you read everything before Island of Graves. If you don't want to wait that long, I suggest reading at least until Island of Legends or Island of Fire). Quests are not included in this work, though you might find references to Fifer and Thisbe.
Lord of the Rings: Honestly, I don't really have a suggestion for this. I suggest reading/watching all three books/movies, but it's really not going to matter that much in my opinion.
That said, read at your own risk. Spoilers might appear, and I do not want anyone to be upset.

"One Ring to Rule the Worlds" - A KOTLC, Unwanteds, and LOTR Fanfiction by @The_Little_Halfling
Chapter 1: Alex
“Look! It’s the Island of Fire, Alex!” called Lani, her raven hair flowing in the breeze behind her. Her arm was extended toward an island that would have looked like heaven, if not for the massive volcano belching smoke that was set into its center.
The young mage looked up from his sketchpad, his eyes dazed. He and his close friends had taken Ms. Morning’s small boat to have some fun for the day, and he had intended on taking some time to improve his art. Lani seemed to have different ideas, as she had been chatting nonstop the entire ride.
Lani continued her babbling, “Oh! It’s so beautiful, Alex! I’m sure you could paint it – really – but wouldn’t it just be splendid if we took a look ourselves?” Her eyes glinted with adventure, and she looked towards her silent companion to the left to back her up.
Samheed hated to see Lani disappointed. “What do you say, Al? It’ll only be for a few moments! Besides, it’ll be nice to feel some solid ground under my feet.” Samheed felt his stomach heave from the tossing of the ship.
Alex studied his friends carefully, drawing his robe closer to his body to shield himself from the wind. He was about to say “no” – It was too dangerous. The Island of Pirates seemed deserted, but he knew that not all the islands were as peaceful as they had seemed. Warbler Island had proven that on multiple occasions with its dictator, Queen Eagala. Alex turned his head from the sketchbook to tell them just this, but the words died on his lips. Lani and Sam looked too happy – too excited – for him to ruin it.
“Fine – five minutes – but that’s it!” he conceded, making sure he had his component vest on and that it was filled with clay shackles, blinding highlighters, invisible paint brushes, and heart attack components.
Alex’s friends shouted with joy, running to the edge of the ship. Alex sighed, hoping Simber would not eat him alive for this.
Samheed jumped from the small craft, landing on the sandy shore of the island. Lani dropped down next to him, her smile almost as big as her ego. Alex came next, his eyes taking in his surroundings carefully. Everything seemed fine, so he ushered them on, urging them to explore. The two ran off without hesitation.
The head mage stopped in his tracks, vibrations coursing through his ankles. The quakes continued, becoming stronger and more violent as the seconds ticked by. He struggled to run towards his friends, the shakes intensifying. He stumbled over his feet, barely managing to right himself.
“Sam! Lani! We need to get off the isla–” he shouted, cut off by the strongest force yet. Alex felt his feet leave the ground. The mage was weightless for a second before his head collided with the thick trunk of a tree. He crashed to the ground, hearing the cries of his companions as they suffered similar fates. He desperately tried to call out to the others, but his strength was leaving him. Vision fading, it was all he could do to remain upright. Suddenly, the ground went out from under him, and he was pitched into a deep cavern.
Chapter 2: Sophie
Sophie Foster slowly adjusted to her surroundings. She had been aiming for Watchward Heath, but obviously, she had imagined something – she didn’t even know what this was. Her friends seemed to be just as surprised as her.
“This is where the Fork-man works?!” cried Keefe Sencen, his face incredulous. He regarded the land thoughtfully, his ice-blue eyes absorbing the small people next to him, “I never imagined him working with the gnomes!”
Sophie rolled her eyes, “No, this isn’t where we were supposed to teleport to. I was imagining his office – which looks really similar to that structure over there – but this isn’t it. Besides, these people aren’t gnomes.” She gestured towards the short people. They were of similar stature, but that’s where the similarities ended. Small tufts of hair and pointed ears were the most notable features, but the clothing style was much cozier than the gnomes’ trademark nature vibe.
Her four friends nodded, seeing the difference, now that they had taken the time. Fitz and Biana looked rather curious, but Dex just looked scared. Sophie was about to ask, but was interrupted by hacking coughs to the right. She turned to see the strangest sight in her life. Three teenagers were emerging from a river – and they had not been there just seconds before.
Almost immediately, her friends gathered up behind her. She held up her hand, gesturing for them to pause. She took a few tentative steps forward so that she could take in the small party in finer detail. There was a tall, brown-haired boy with the strangest red robe on his shoulders. Next to him was another boy, this time adorned with a pale vest filled with all sorts of oddities. Completing the trio was a raven-haired girl. When Sophie continued to stare, the boy in red noticed.
“Do you – do you live here?” he asked, his brown eyes searching desperately for answers. He did not look frightened; rather, he looked mildly bewildered.
Sophie shook her head, “Do you?”
The boy frowned, “No. One minute we were at Pirate Island, and the next we were expelling water from our lungs,”
Sophie smiled. It seemed they were in a similar boat, though she was unsure of what “Pirate Island” was. She held out her hand to pull the young man up. When she looked closer, she could tell he was about her age, maybe a year or two older. “My name is Sophie Foster – I’m from the Lost Cities.”
The enrobed boy flashed a grin, the corner of his eyes perking up. “Alexander Stowe of Artimé – pleased to meet you,” He shook her hand good naturedly.
“Oh please!” interjected the other young man, hands crossed over his chest and a smile playing on his lips, “You’re not just anyone, Alex,” He turned to the others, “The name’s Samheed Burkesh – and you’re looking at the Head Mage and his best friends.”
The girl on Alex’s left rolled her huge eyes, “I am so sorry for Sam’s brutal honesty – but you’ll get used to it pretty fast. I’m Lani, by the way. Who are your companions?”
Sophie jumped, pulling an eyelash from her eye. She pointed to a dark-haired boy with teal eyes, his sister, a tall boy with sandy hair, and another boy who seemed to be fidgeting with a cube. “Meet my friends – Fitz and Biana Vacker, Keefe Sencen, and Dex Dizzinee,”

I'm looking forward to this!
I feel like this might do better on a website like Ao3 or something though, so that's something you should consider.

I actually considered Ao3, and while I really want to put it there, I thought that there were some legal issues why I can't be on there. I might check again, but for now I'll see how it does here I'm looking forward to this!

True, but I personally know there's a few websites that allow fanfictions like Wattpad and fanfiction.net, but it is your story and it's up to you if you want to do that or not.I actually considered Ao3, and while I really want to put it there, I thought that there were some legal issues why I can't be on there. Ah, yes. Time for the next installment. I'll warn you, the chapters still aren't very long, and it's mostly plot setup. Enjoy
Chapter 3: Alex
Alex tried to regain his composure. He and his friends were stuck in a world that they had not known existed – and they had no idea how to return home. It was comforting to know there were others in the same situation. He made a mental note to check the Museum of Large for any notes Mr. Today might have left on the “Lost Cities.”
His friends mingled with the newcomers, but he took stock of their components. They were well supplied, but depending on how long they were here, their supply might plummet. His mind flashed back to their brief stay on the Island of Shipwrecks. Nope – he did NOT want to experience THAT again. Though the scientists had been pleasant, it really had not been an ideal situation.
So caught up in his memories, he should not have been surprised when he was startled out of his thoughts by the blond that had spoken to him earlier.
“What do we do?” she asked, tugging another eyelash out of her chocolate eyes.
Alex jumped, slightly intrigued by the strange habit. “Hmm? I honestly have no idea. My team and I have been through similar things in our world, but nothing quite like this,” he raked a hand through his wavy locks, weariness setting in as he observed the setting sun.
The girl seemed to almost read his mind, “We should probably find a place for the night. We’re not going to achieve anything without proper rest.”
Alex’s eyebrows raised, “I had been thinking the same exact thing . . . how did you know?”
Sophie’s face turned red. Her voice lowered considerably. “I’m a telepath”
The head mage jerked back from her, “You read my mind?!” He fingered his heart attack spell carefully.
The young lady’s eyes widened, “What?! No!” She took a deep breath before continuing, “I’m sorry, I should have explained. I’m a telepath, but I don’t read people’s minds whenever I feel like it. That’s against the law where I come from. However, human thoughts tend to broadcast more loudly, and I hadn’t remembered to shield my mind from yours yet,”
Alex gaped, confused. She could read minds? Could they all? “Wait – what do you mean by ‘human thoughts?’ Aren’t you human? And can you all read minds?” He vaguely wondered if he had eaten too much platyprot eggs the night before.
Sophie shook her head, “No. All five of us are actually elves, and we each have different abilities. Keefe can read emotions as an Empath, and Biana can turn invisible because she’s a Vanisher. Like me, Fitz is a telepath, but Dex is a technopath, which makes him extremely powerful when it comes to gadgets. I’m also an Inflictor, Polyglot, Enhancer, and Teleporter,” She continued to explain that she could inflict emotions on people, translate and speak any language, enhance other people’s abilities, and teleport around the globe. Apparently all elves could use talents like telekinesis and levitation too.
Alex was baffled. He thought he was a powerful mage, but clearly not. “Wow . . . I never thought that I’d meet more mages in my life,” he said weakly, rubbing the back of his neck.
The girl chuckled, to Alex’s surprise. “Magic? No, our powers come down to science and light,” She froze for a moment, her eyebrow raised in question. “Does that mean that you perform magic?”
Alex nodded, happy to share a bit about his world. “Each of us are trained in an art focus,” He described how Mr. Today had made Artimé as a refuge for Unwanteds sentenced to death by the land of Quill. He tried not to share too much, purposely omitting his own part in Artimé’s history. Sophie’s eyes widened at each word. “I am a painter and artist, but Samheed is a theater focus and Lani a writer. Musicians are common in our land too. Our magic is instilled into our art,”
Sophie tilted her head to the side, “So what can you all do?”
Alex smiled, “I’m glad you asked. I can demonstrate, if you would like. I’m a pretty powerful mage though, so what I do isn’t always the same as other mages,” Sophie gestured for him to continue. He pulled out his scatterclips, clay shackles, and invisibility paint brushes. He first cast a glass wall after muttering “glass.” He turned in one fluid motion and threw his scatterclips so they dragged a frightened squirrel against a tree. With ease, he tossed the clay shackles at the squirrel, watching as they encased its tiny wrists in clay. Sophie’s eyes grew the size of dinner plates as she watched him, amazed as he painted his arm invisible.
“Release!” Alex cried, and the work he had done disappeared.
Sophie applauded, and Alex was pleased to see a wide smile on her face. He mimed a bow, letting his robes swish behind him. They were going to make a wonderful team.
Chapter 4: Sophie
Sophie returned with Alex to the group. She could tell that he was a leader; the way he held himself radiated wisdom and confidence. It was not hard to notice that his warm chocolate eyes shined with bravery or that his mind always jumped to his people before himself. She admired it, and despite not knowing entirely what being “Head Mage” meant, she fully believed that he fit it to a tee. She was well aware that he had hidden some part of his past; the story was too happy for the sorrow that was in his eyes. She was tempted to snatch it from his mind, but having violated the laws of telepathy years before, she did not want to repeat the act. The two had agreed that neither party was to leave wherever they were without making sure both groups could get home safely. As much as Sophie wanted to teleport home straight away, she knew that she wanted to help the Artimeans more.
The group quickly decided that their first order of business would be to find out where in the world they were. They looked for some sort of sign that might indicate their location, but were unsuccessful. Regrouping, Lani suggested they find an inhabitant to ask. Most of Sophie's friends and the mages approved of the plan, so they set out. The group wandered down dirt streets for hours. Every turn they took seemed to loop them back to where they had been before. Sophie grew frustrated, and several eyelashes had been shed. Finally, the group stumbled on a circular door set into a hill. The lantern outside was lit, and Sophie took that as a welcome sign. She watched with anticipation as the Head Mage rapped three times on the green door. Several moments passed, but no one came to the door. Alex repeated the gesture, but to no avail.
“Give it up, Al,” groaned Samheed, as his friend raised his hand to knock again, “They’re not home.”
Sophie turned to look at Alex, noticing the exhausted and forlorn expression driving weary lines into his face. She opened her mouth to suggest that they move on when the door suddenly flew open to reveal a man half her height. His curly head shifted to gaze at her, his mouth open in shock.
Chapter 5: Frodo
Frodo struggled for words to greet the group of people on his front stoop. He had not ever seen so many – so many tall people – in one place. “Can – Can I help you?” he asked, breathless.
A boy with a red cape and bright brown eyes stepped forward, “If you would be so kind, my friends and I are in need of some assistance. We have no idea where we are, and we are quite weary from the day,”
Frodo bent his head respectfully, “Come in, make yourself comfortable. Supper will be ready in a couple of minutes,”
The blond-haired girl and the caped individual exchange a smile. He stepped aside to let them in, and they piled into the room. He watched as a couple of the boys set up camp in his armchairs while a couple of other kids made themselves comfortable on the floor. A muffled curse came from the room over as one of the guests hit their head on the hobbit-sized beams; Frodo had to stifle a laugh. They seemed well mannered, but he knew very well what his Uncle Bilbo had gone through with the dwarves.
He wandered into the dining room to set out plates for his unusual guests, and was surprised when he heard the clink of silverware being placed on the table. His blue eyes wandered to watch the blond haired girl set a fork down and the brown-eyed fellow holding a stack of plates.
“I-I can take care of it,” he assured them, setting the rest of his precious silver spoons down.
The boy laughed, “We know, but we want to help. We ARE imposing on you, after all!”
Frodo nodded, allowing them to help him, though he kept a close eye on his silver spoons. He would not be having a stranger stealing them after keeping them safe from Lobelia’s clutches for so long! He set his eyes to his work, nervous and shy.
The three of them finished quickly, and before long, a sizable feast was upon the table. His guests helped themselves to the food, and Frodo ate alongside them. “What is it that you need from me?” he asked, once everyone had finished.
The girl opened her mouth to speak, but suddenly a loud knock came from the door. Frodo pushed his chair back and rushed to the door. He hoped it was just Sam or one of his cousins, but was equally delighted to find the old wizard on his steps. The man’s face was weathered by the sun’s harsh rays, and the folds of his cloak were caked in dust.
“Gandalf!” he cried, a smile breaking the soft lines of his face, “Oh, do come in! I have guests as of now, but I’m sure we can make room!”
Gandalf followed the little man throughout the halls, and gasped when he saw the party in the dining room. The wizard muttered something under his breath, but continued forward. When he was seated beside the hobbit, he grumbled, “There is something that I have to tell you, Frodo. And I do believe it concerns the others at this table.” His grey eyes traveled the table, silently observing the party. Frodo noticed some of them shrink back into their chairs.
Frodo’s guests exchanged wary glances, visibly confused. Tense silence followed as Gandalf and Frodo eyes each other, weighing the consequences. “Can this not wait?” Frodo mumbled to the wise man.
“No, it must not,” Gandalf murmured. He cast his gaze upon the others at his table. He recognized them, though he was sure that they would not realize who he was in each of their worlds. No, they would not believe it even if he told them. Louder, he continued, “Frodo, do you still have it?”
The hobbit nodded, drawing a ring from his pocket. The wizard took the ring, and set it on fire. Frodo gasped, which was not left unnoticed by Gandalf. Frodo felt unreasonable anger at the destruction of his dear ring! Why should Gandalf take his property and see to its devastation?! No man had that right! He almost gave the wizard a piece of mind but stopped at the chilled look the wise man sent his way, suddenly feeling humiliated. When the fire burnt away, the ring was still intact – to Frodo’s relief – and a script glowed from it’s golden curves.
“Ash nazg thrakatulûk agh burzum-ishi krimpatul,” the girl from before breathed, brown eyes wide, “One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them, One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them.”
Gandalf chuckled, “Very good, lassie. I suspected that you would be able to read it,” The girl’s face screwed up into confusion and bewilderment. “My research has proven correct.”
“What research?” scoffed the dark-haired boy with the orange eyes. He looked angry and fed up. Frodo realized with a start that he did not believe what the wizard was saying. Not many people crossed with wizards; Frodo genuinely feared for the boy’s wellbeing.
“My research to prove that the Dark Lord Sauron is back – and he will stop at nothing to retrieve that ring – because that ring carries his soul and essence. To allow him to have it, would be to allow the world to fall apart and crumble. It must be stopped,”
Frodo felt his mouth fall open, and he struggled to come up with some smart answer. “What shall we do?” he asked, lamely. He fidgeted in his chair, not comfortable in the slightest.
“Bring it to Rivendell. The elves will know what to do, you can seek counsel with them. I suggest you take a small team with you,”
Frodo was already up and out of his chair. He did not savor the idea of a Dark Lord, nor its controlling ring. He found this strange, considering he had nearly thrown a fit over its destruction minutes before. The hobbit dismissed the notion with a slight shake of the head – there were more important matters to ponder. He shoved spare clothing into a satchel alongside a canteen of water and food. “But who will I take with me? Surely I cannot do this alone!” he cried.
Gandalf laughed, “Why not the brilliant companions you have here?”
Frodo shook his head, “I refuse to endanger my guests. There is no reason for them to come anyway – I don’t even know their names!”
Gandalf smiled, “Oh? Would it change your mind if I did?”

I love the way you've continued the stories like you've written them yourself. You've made the characters act the same way as they would have if this was written by the authors of books. You've made Keefe use his weird nicknames for Mr. Forkle and Sophie's even tugging her eyelashes as usual. I'm very impressed! Keep it up!!
