Bringing Back The Scratch Friends List

I don't see why the scratch team took off the friends list. I think it would be great to have it back again. Followers just mean your a subscriber of a scratcher but being friends since both scratchers would have to accept the friend request would mean more. But then again scratch isn't supposed to be a social network so I guess that's why they deleted it. Overall scratch is supposed to be an open community so having a friends list isn't needed, but it could show more meaning than just followers. Post your thoughts of this topic if you want

Friends were followers, only they were called “friends”. I think I see why they changed the name.

Yeah, it's really no different from the old system, besides the name change. I don't support.

Bringing Back The Scratch Friends List

PLEASE READ ALL BEFORE POSTING ANYTHING CRITICAL!

First, I'll just say this, there is a different topic asking for seemingly the same thing, but it's not. I'm just asking for friends to be ADDED not to have them replace followers.

Part 1: Stating the facts
Scratch can be a better place. Many people go around spamming “F4F” or “Follow me!” or just links in general. These F4Fs really bug me, and WAYYYYY more people too. This I learned from thisproject. That “followers” used to be called “friends”. But then they changed it, JUST to match other social media sites. There even is a scratch wiki page about it. Here is a quote from it: “A friend was a Scratcher that had been added to another Scratcher's friend list. When a friend was added, they were not entitled to any personal information that had been used to register, other than their username. Once someone was added as a friend, new projects they share would show up under the ‘My Friends’ Latest Projects' section on the Front Page. Friending was renamed to following in Scratch 2.0, due to the system functioning similarly to following on other websites” If we changed it back though, we could have more fun, and less spam.

Part 2: Lets ADD it, not change it.
Why don't we at least add it, and keep followers as well. We could have a followers list, and a friends list. Here are some good reasons, said by @p-p-p-p-p-p-p-p-p-p-

p-p-p-p-p-p-p-p-p-p- wrote:

How about this:

As Paddle2See said, a ‘friend’ is a 2 part relationship, where both people have to agree. When you get a follow, there would be a ‘would you like to be friends?’ and a yes or no.
PROS:
Removes ‘fame’ from scratch
Makes it easier to find certain people

CONS:
Removes fame from scratch

If you accept, both people appear on each others ‘friend’ list.
PROS:
Makes it easier to see who is friends with who

CONS:
Adds another bar of things

You can only have up to 1000 friends.
PROS:
Keeps you from spamming friends

CONS:
BuT I waNT MoRe FrIenDs!!! (JK)

Followers still exist, but instead of a ‘following’ and ‘followers’ tab, there would just be numbers.
PROS:
Makes it harder to see who is following who, so there will be less discrimination
Makes the followers smaller, making scratch more about the coding.

CONS:
I don't know any cons right now.

If somebody is following and being followed by the same person, they move to the ‘friends’ list automatically.
PROS:
Makes it easier for transition between followers and friends, because otherwise you would have to friend a lot of people.

No Cons.

Friends have special perks too, like they appear for longer on the what's happening, and you can choose to only get studio requests from friends. You can also ‘invite all’ friends.
PROS:
Makes life easier

CONS:
I can't think of any.

“But wait!”You say,“The last one has been denied by the ST!”Actually, no it hasn't. The idea of making a button to add all FOLLOWERS was denied, but now that I bring up the idea of friends, the idea of making a button to add all FRIENDS has not been denied yet.

Do you see now why we should at least ADD friends?

Part 3: Other IMPORTANT notes
#1 I know that other there is a different conversation that was made years ago about this same topic, but I explain why in WAYYYYY more detail. Please don't tell me that this is a dulp and give links to the other topic. Thanks!

#2 Please don't bring up banning F4F here, that is not what I'm talking about. I'm just asking to AT LEAST add a friends list, where people can request to the friends with someone, and then someone else accepts. Yes I do agree that adding friends will LOWER the number of F4Fs, but that's not my main reason, in fact, that's not one of my reasons at all!

#3 Guys, I'm stating the facts in the first part, and asking for it to be ADDED not changed in the second part. Also the first part is just stating the facts, not what I'm asking for or my opinion.

#4 I know that I already made a topic called “Please ST, Please… (Followers vs Friends)” that also seeming asked for the same thing. (BTW it was closed) But this also, not saying the same thing. Here I am PLAINLY asking for friends to be added, not for it to replace followers.

#5 I kinda already said this, but please don't report this just because it seems like a copy of a different topic. I'm asking for friends to only be ADDED not have followers to be competely changed back.

Part 4: Easy (I think) way to do it
We could have a button next to the follow button that says "request friend" or something like that. If you click it, then the other person would get a message saying something like: (username) requests to be friends with you and then you can accept or decline. As we do not get a message for when someone unfollows us (go here to see why) we could only get a message when someone accepts, but not if they decline. Then we could have a seperate list that says “friends” or something like that, and it would, well- list the people you are friends with. Maybe like @p-p-p-p-p-p-p-p-p-p- said, if someone followed someone, and the other person followed them back, then that person would be their friend. That is only an idea, and I'm not giving any opinion on that, it is all from @p-p-p-p-p-p-p-p-p-p-.

Part(-ish) 5: The people
Signed- @Mrcakeyman89, @Rae-TV, @Archie77, @LiveYourIife, @FrostWings, @CookeNotCookie, @kloooohh, @Scratch_cat_4, @TheSuperCool457, @-AMETHYSTQUEEN-, @The-Emerald-Wizard, @Tragickwreck7, @Matthew_K1, @Rainy-Animations, @TheGlassPenguin, @ytc-sohaib, @AnimatorsParadise, @GAMS2, and more who didn't want their name here!

If you would like to be a part of this, just add another post on this topic saying something like “I agree” and to show your support. Thanks!

Thank you all for reading, ST please consider this. ADDING friends can be helpful and fun.

Bringing Back The Scratch Friends List

Would there be a place on screen where the people i am following show?

Like for example i am following @griffpatch, but he is too famous to become a friend with me, would i be able to quickly go to his profile from my profile?

Bringing Back The Scratch Friends List

This is a repost of a post that I originally made here.

Maybe “friending” could be used when two Scratchers follow each other (which would show up on the user's profiles), so instead of asking for “f4f”, they could ask to friend someone.
Or there could be a friend request system like FB has. There could be a link to send a friend request below the follow button, and that would send a private message to the user, and they can either confirm the request or deny it. If the request is accepted, the “My Friends' Latest Projects” row on the Front Page would reappear.

Maybe a friending system similar to that of the Nintendo 3DS/Nintendo Switch consoles could be implemented. When a user sets up their account, they receive a unique friend code. To register a friend, the two users would exchange their friend codes and enter them onto the Scratch website. If the register was successful, the users would be added to each other's friend lists and the “My Friend's Latest Projects” bar on the front page would reappear. Also, friend codes would be blacklisted in the curse detector for comments, forum posts, bios, and project descriptions to prevent users from publicly revealing them on the website.

Well, like I said, we would still have followers, which means we would still have a followers bar. We would just add another friends bar to your profile, were the list of “people I'm following” is.

Ehh TBH I don't really like that idea, I think I will stick with the example of how to do it that I posted in the main thing.

Well, it would at least prevent young users from friending people they don't know. Parents would be happy.

Support, but I do not want to include this clause.

PROS:
Makes it harder to see who is following who, so there will be less discrimination
Makes the followers smaller, making scratch more about the coding.
CONS:
I don't know any cons right now.
I was too lazy to quote and snip

I'm not really sure why this is useful…

Also, how would this reduce f4f?

While a dupe is a dupe, I think that this has more detail, and explains how it would work.

Thanks for quoting me! You forgot one thing though, When somebody follows you you get something asking whether you want to friend the other person or not.
