In the phrase “but seemingly not because the topic was a dupe” which topic is the dupe, the original topic, or the duplicate topic that is closed?

There is a topic but I found a dupe that was a month older. It's closed but it doesn't seem like it was closed by the scratch team.

Hmm,what do you mean by closed,but not closed by scratch team?If you mean that the person closed it,as in sayed that this idea is closed?Well I think it wouldn't be a dupe

Report it to be re-opened. I hate it when people close topics for no discernable reason, not thinking that in 4 years I'm going to look for a dupe, find it, and see it's closed.

Yeah, but it seems the OP hasn't been active for a while. I reported it to be reopened, is that what I should have done? Because this is a frequently suggested suggestion.

Nah, I would actually not suggest doing this. If the “original thread” is closed, then it's not a duplicate and the other thread can stay open.

Sometimes you just don't know why a topic was closed. Perhaps the owner closed it so they don't have to worry about it anymore? Maybe they reported it to be closed, then we closed it, and we forgot to write “Closed by request of topic owner” there. In any case, it would probably be better if the newer thread was continued, or a different duplicate found that is open.
