It wasn't blocked solely for that reason; the video demonstrated many other reasons. It was probably mainly because the community on here is allowed to create projects and studios that are legal in the US but not in China

Here's the thing:
They do have freedom of speech. However, that looks drastically different than what we're accustomed to. As you all mentioned, it's pretty restrictive compared to what many countries have.

However, this isn't something new. The US has imposed similar measures like this during times of crisis (especially during wartime i.e. WWI) so they could focus on getting things done.

The way I take it is, if they let someone acknowledge that Taiwan and Hong Kong are separate countries, even if it's only tacitly, they think it would threaten the legitimacy of the country as a whole. Who's to say that Xinjiang, Tibet, or some other region won't be next?

Ya, I can see why. It's like the ST saying that Alaska isn't a part of the US, and listing it as a separate country. (even tho it is) If the US government was like china's, they would probably block a site for not agreeing with what their laws are.

Here's the thing about the territories though:
Hong Kong, even though it's been under the Chinese rule for about 20ish years, operates differently than what the Mainland government does. Taiwan, which most tend to agree is not a part of China as it's been operating as its own country for over half a century, is legally considered a territory of China. Whether companies like Scratch consider those two areas “independent” or not is completely up to them.

We could say the same of Puerto Rico and Guam (though I'm not completely sure of the situation in this case) - they're territories of the US, but it's more of a semi-autonomous government somewhat similar to Hong Kong.

My understanding is that the Scratch Team wants to allow people to choose what they're most comfortable identifying with. For some people like me, I get very offended when Taiwan gets lumped in with China because I feel it never has been nor is a part of it after the CCP took over the Mainland in 1945. Other Taiwanese people might identify as a part of China since the people who took over Taiwan were technically Chinese, and we do tend to share a similar culture.

I agree, which is why some people have suggested changing cluntry to location.
