Hey guys!! We’ve been really inspired to write this fanfic so we present you with the first chapter of our keeper of the lost Cities book nine fanfiction, Destiny!!
sorry if there are some mistakes, it’s currently unedited

Sophie sighed. It was bad enough that Keefe was injured and unconscious in the hospital wing, manifesting an ability that even Elwin hadn’t yet deciphered. But being basically forced to work with her biological mom? Ten-bazillion times worse. Reluctantly, Sophie reached up to her least favorite Councillor’s temples and, for what felt like the hundredth time, dove into her mind.
Oralie’s mind was, as it had been this entire time, in turmoil. Councilor-lying-curls had been trying for what seemed like the past few centuries to find something in her memories that could tell them how to unlock the shimmering blue cache that held the secret to…well…everything. That was the only reason Sophie had agreed to help her in any way she could.
Not that she had proved to be useful.
It had been weeks since Sophie had dragged Keefe back, unconscious, from the dwarven capital, Loamnore, and the creepy experiment his mom had done on him, involving shadow flux, weird light, and magnesium.
Now she stood in her gigantic room that took up the entire third floor of her adopted parents’ sparkling crystal mansion, Havenfield. A lump formed in her throat as she remembered the last time she was here with Keefe. Sophie shook her head; it was no use thinking about it, all she could do now for Keefe was what she was already doing. Trying to do, anyway.
She sighed again, then dove deeper into her biological mother’s memories, hoping to find something. Anything. Some sort of clue.
Getting distracted? Oralie’s mind whispered.
Just…gathering my concentration. Sophie replied sharply.
Oralie blinked open her eyes and raised one eyebrow.
Keefe used to do that.
Sophie beat back the thought fiercely.
Her biological mother frowned, but closed her eyes and grew focused again. Sophie plunged into the many tangled strings of memories swirled around the inner part of Oralie’s consciousness. Maybe she’d have more luck this time.
Suddenly there came a frantic knock from the door.
“Come in.” Sophie called, turning around. But the door was already open.
Sandor burst in. Tarina, who had recently returned from the troll capital, on his heels.
“Elwin wants you.” Sandor grunted in his squeaky voice. Ro used to mimic his “bunny voice”. But Ro was never around anymore, just like her charge—nope. Sophie shut down the thought.
“What—” Sophie’s heart seemed to explode into a flurry of emotions. Excitement, fear, interest, confusion. Fear won out.
“Keefe is awake.” Tarina put in, far more helpfully, and Sophie’s heart seemed to freeze up in her chest.
“I’m coming with you.” Oralie said suddenly, stepping forward, determination hardening her gaze. Sophie decided it would be easier to allow her to tag along, rather than argue and potentially have Keefe fall back unconscious during the minutes they wasted.
Her biological mother snatched Sophie’s hand, but Sophie shook her off and headed for the window. She began fiddling with the latch, trying to get her nervously shaking fingers to pry the window open.
“Wait—I thought you could teleport without falling now?” Councilor Oralie asked.
“I need to be running, and I can’t here.” Sophie forced a grin, “I’m not sure you would be able to keep up, anyway.”
“Miss Foster, you must take at least one of your body guards!” Sandor insisted, “so I am coming with you.”
Sophie had finally gotten the window open, and stepped out, snatching Oralie’s outstretched hand.
“Elwin will be there, and I can’t carry you and Oralie.” Oralie may be an elf, but her levitating was probably weak at best, since the Council hadn’t thought the skills that all elves had—such as levitating, telekinesis, outward channeling, and body temperature and breathing regulation—particularly important until a few months before.
The Neverseen had taken advantage of this weakness, teaching their members to have a high mastery of the skills most elves often forgot. They had used outward channeling to destroy Lumenaria, one of the elves’ cities, during a Peace Summit with leaders of all the other intelligent species. This had severely damaged, not only the city, but everyone’s trust in the council, accomplishing the Neverseen’s desired effect.
Mr. Forkle, the leader of the Black Swan, a rebel organization responsible for creating Sophie and placing her in the human world, had died in the attack on Lumenaria. Mr. Forkle was actually a twin, but the elves looked down upon multiple births, so his parents had covered it up, and registered him and his brother under the same strand of DNA, and forced them to pretend that they were one person. However, the twins had used this to their advantage when they kept watch over Sophie when she was growing up in the human world.
“I go where you go.” Sandor said stubbornly.
Sophie sighed, “Fine. But it’s your fault if we crash to the ground before I get a chance to teleport.”
Sandor didn’t reply as he grasped Sophie’s arm in his huge, goblin-y hand. Sophie reluctantly grabbed Oralie’s hand and stepped out the window, holding herself on thin air as best as possible with somewhat shaky levitation. She had never been as good as Keefe… No. She had to get there before she could think about him. And decide if she was furious with him or terrified that he had taken so long to wake up.
Oralie stepped out after her, and Sophie had to give her a boost of energy to keep her biological mother aloft. Oralie gave Sophie a grateful smile, but Sophie looked away, instead focusing on their next problem.
A large, distinctly goblin-shaped problem.
Sophie closed her eyes and gathered her mental and core energy, then tugged Sandor out the window, forcing as much energy as she possibly could on the air beneath their feet. Sandor stood shakily beside her, and she decided that this was high enough. It wasn’t like they’d be able to get any higher. So she looked down and slowly let go of her concentration, letting them fall.
“I hate doing this.” Sandor muttered beside her, and Oralie shrieked and the ground suddenly seemed, very, very close. Then Sophie closed her eyes and let the energy out of her mind, and they crashed into the void with a loud, thunder-like boom.
They appeared in the hospital wing at Foxfire where several cots stood empty, but Sophie’s eyes immediately traveled to the only occupied one. Keefe was sitting, propped up by several pillows, on the last cot in the row. His blond hair was uncharacteristically flat, like he had been sleeping on it, which, of course, he had, but his ice blue eyes were bright, which was a relief. He glanced over at her and flashed his trademark smirk.
“Looks like I Fostered it.”
Then, he had the nerve to wink at her.
Sophie really wanted to punch him, but her lips wouldn’t stop grinning as she rushed over to his cot…

This was really well written! It actually seemed like something Shannon would write, especially because you kept inserting some events that happened before this, which is something she does often. One small discrepancy that I found was that the little paragraph on Mr. Forkle wasn’t really necessary, and didn’t really tie into what was happening. But all in all, this chapter was great! I would definitely keep reading
(also I’m sorry if I wasn’t supposed to look at this mmh, I saw this on @atinycarat ‘s account and saw “Keeper fanfic” so I couldn’t help myself- it was really great though)

Sophie threw her arms around him and held on for one long moment before stepping back.
“Of all the STUPID THINGS YOU’VE DONE!” She fumed for a minute, “That…was definitely a first.”
“Have I ever told you you’re cute when you’re angry?” He asked, blinking innocently.
She buried her face in her hands, embarrassing herself by making a distinctly animal-like growling sound.
She looked up, “Where’s Elwin?”
Keefe raised one eyebrow, “You’re going to ignore that adorable sound you just made?” When she glared at him, he shrugged and gestured towards the door that led into Elwin’s private office. “He’s trying to figure out…what she did.” Keefe looked away.
Sophie’s heart ached, and she really wanted to go hug him again, but instead went over to the door and knocked.
Elwin called out. “Keefe—get back in bed! I’ve already told you—you shouldn’t be up yet, I’m still working on it!”
“Elwin, it’s me!” She called.
The door opened and the doctor came out, his brown hair even messier than usual. His glasses were askew, his clothes, which were covered in tiny t-rexes, were rumpled, and he looked exhausted. Bullhorn, his pet banshee walked out behind him, the banshee, unlike his master seemed content, which was a good thing. If banshees sensed that someone was in danger they would shriek but if someone was near dying they would curl up beside them.
Bullhorn crept underneath one of the the unused cots and fell fast asleep.
Elwin’s face didn’t split into a smile, as it normally did upon seeing her. Instead, he looked even more worried, not meeting her eyes and instead walking slowly over to Keefe’s cot.
“I’m still not sure what kind of ability he has.” He sighed, turning around to face her and finally offering her a small smile. But it faded fast.
Sophie closed her eyes. She knew this was coming, but she wasn’t sure she was ready to deal with the extra stress of an unknown ability. Sighing, she turned back to Keefe.
Keefe grinned, but it was obviously forced. “Well, at least what we don’t know, we don’t have to worry about it. Though I’m pretty sure Foster’s going to worry about me anyway.” He smirked, and this time it looked more real.
Sophie winced. He was right about that one. She couldn’t help it, though!
Suddenly, Sandor, who had positioned himself outside the door, rushed in, frowning and obviously worried. More than usual, that is.
“What’s wrong?” Sophie asked, resisting the urge to pull out a few itchy eyelashes.
He held out a frighteningly familiar imparter. It looked just the same as any other imparter: a silver rectangle made of a strange metal, but it had a few bloodstains around the end. It was Keefe’s old one, until they figured out that his mom had rigged it so she could spy on his conversations, and that they could call her using it—though only by covering a sensor in Keefe’s blood. Once, though, she had called them, which was somehow more scary.
“Put it away! We don’t want to talk to her,” Keefe hissed, realizing what was about to happen just moments before Sophie did.
Suddenly, the imparter buzzed slightly and a creepily recognizable voice emanated from the object.
Sophie backed away slightly as Lady Gisela spoke.
“Ah. Keefe, you’re awake. That’s…promising.”
“What are you talking about?” Sophie asked sharply.
“Have you figured it out yet?” Lady Gisela asked, dodging Sophie’s question.
That made Sophie really, really angry. Lady Gisela didn’t even ask if Keefe was okay! Gisela hadn’t seen her son in weeks, and when she had last seen him he had been unconscious because of an experiment she had done to him. Sophie wanted to rip the imparter out of Sandor’s hands and smash it on the floor.
“Figured what out?” Sophie asked, her voice dripping with venom.
“Oh. You haven’t, then. That’s rather…disappointing.”
Keefe was just sitting on his cot, eyes dull. Sophie needed to take care of Lady Gisela for him, so they could all start along the road to recovery. Especially Keefe.
“What haven’t we figured out?” Sophie asked. She really wanted to punch Lady Gisela through the screen, but Keefe’s mom had proved to be helpful before. So she tried to be patient, clenching her fists and keeping quiet while she waited for Lady Gisela’s reply.
“I need you to train Keefe to use his ability. But you haven’t figured out what that ability is yet, have you?” Lady Gisela’s tone was condescending,
Sophie didn’t reply. She didn’t want Keefe’s mom to know how limited their knowledge was. But, like the annoyingly smart person she was, Lady Gisela was at least one step ahead of them. Again.
“You haven’t figured anything out yet.” She observed simply, but her voice managed to be tired, bored, and mocking all at the same time.
Sophie rolled her eyes, “Well, Keefe only just woke up.” She was irritated with herself for letting Lady Gisela get to her.
“And I’m fine, by the way. Thanks for your concern, mom.” Keefe snapped finally after an awkward silence.
His mom didn’t seem to have anything to say to that, so Sophie made her move.
“But why don’t you enlighten us? After all, I can’t teach Keefe to use his ability if I don’t know what it is. Isn’t that what you were just saying?” Sophie asked, wondering how she could teach Keefe to use his ability, and why Lady Gisela would want them to know what it was if they could use it against her.
“I call it a Fluxionator, after the Shadowflux that allowed me to create it.” Keefe’s mom began.
“I don’t care what it’s called! What can I do now?” Keefe demanded, glaring at the Imparter’s blank screen.
“A Fluxionator has the ability to see someone’s destiny.”
“So…kind of like a Descryer?” Sophie asked, resisting the urge to tug out another eyelash.
“It is an infinitely more powerful ability. In fact, if I got it just right, Keefe should now also be able to alter someone’s destiny.” Lady Gisela said, a disgusting hint of pride in her voice, “Though I did use the Descryer’s ability as my starting point, until I realized that a Shade’s ability was far more similar to what I was looking for. Using Shadowvapor, Shades see the darkness and light in each one of us, the shadows representing our potential for evil, and light potential for good. But Keefe’s ability is far more exact than any other ability, Descryer or Shade. I want you and the Black Swan to teach Keefe as best you can how to control it. You are supposed to be the ability experts, after all.”

Oh my, this is getting so good! I can totally see this as Keefe’s ability! And I definitely approve of the Keefe-worthy quote in the beginning
Also, everything flowed together quite nicely in this chapter. Some little flashbacks, angry little flare-ups, perfect personalities. Exactly what I look for in Shannon’s writing! All in all, this is a quite nice story so far! I’ve only made, like, two Keeper fanfics (both Sokeefe, hehe) but your writing flows so much better than mine! I had completely ignored Tam and Linh’s existence in them even though it takes place around Flashback, and I basically made the main story (Shannon’s) disappear. Maybe I’ll share one someday- I could definitely use some of your tips. Anyway, the story was incredible. Thanks for the great read while I’m waiting for book 9!

OMG, that was better than I ever imagined, THAT'S why it's called Destiny!!! The title even paralleled to the story like Shannon would do!!! This is spot on, you did Keefe PERFECT!!!!

Yep!! And ty!! I’m glad we got Keefe right, I feel as though everyone but Shannon typically has trouble getting him the way I see him, as far as other fan-fictions I’ve read.
