This type of feeling is normal, and it can happen before people enter the deeper stages of sleep
My theory is that the brain misunderstands what's going on as our muscles relax before sleep. It's normal for the muscles to relax, of course, but the brain gets confused. For a minute, it thinks you're falling. In response, the brain causes your muscles to tense as a way to “catch yourself” before falling down
. Up to 70 percent of people we collected data from experience them occasionally—but no one knows exactly what causes them.

Hypnic jerk, also called hypnagogic jerk, is a normal reaction that can be caused by anxiety, caffeine, a dream, or discomfort of sleeping. A hypnic jerk is the feeling triggered by a sudden muscle twitch, causing the feeling of falling while sleeping or dreaming. Hypnic jerks typically occur moments before the first stage of sleep. About 70% of people have experienced hypnic jerk. Hypnic jerks are most common in children, when dreams are considered the most simple.

'Tis weird when I grab on to my bed, out of reflex, because I feel I'm going to fall… Then I have to convince myself I'm not going to die.

I haven't had this for YEARS!
I think the last time I had it was when I went to Disneyland Paris a few years back.

That was the main reason why I never searched up why your vision goes weird when you rub your eyes or stand up.

The way the first post is structured drags the topic into text-based roleplay game territory. Closing thread.
