Do you want the date that anyone could first download a copy of the Scratch editor or the date that anyone first had access to the Scratch website that let you upload Scratch projects and let anyone run them online?

Scratch 1.0 came out on January 8, 2007, I believe.

The earliest version that is accessible (Scratch 0.1) was made on February 14, 2004.

Not sure where everyone is getting the January date from, especially since Scratch Day, which celebrate's Scratch's anniversary, is in May.

While there are earlier versions available, the official public release was in May 15, 2007.

That's probably the earliest version available to download that is 1.0 and above. Maybe the first officially released version was from May 15, 2007.

I don’t want to make anyone’s homework assignment harder cause homework is hard enough, but, from our current point of view Scratch is both a programming language and online community and you also have to decide what “public release” means. MIT News announced Scratch May 14, 2007. Maybe that’s the “put a stake in the ground” event that sets release date of what we now think of as “Scratch”. https://news.mit.edu/2007/resnick-scratch

But it is true that the Editor existed in various forms and available in various degrees before then (This snapshot from the archive shows kids using the Editor in 2004 but in January 2007 anybody could then download the editor from the web ) and that the Scratch website existed in various stages before May 2007.

What I think might be going on is that Scratch Day was celebrated on the day that Scratch received a large amount of news attention, as this snapshot from May 17th, 2007 has a notice at the top saying that the site might be slow due to traffic from several news outlets. The first snapshot of the Scratch Day website from early 2009 shows that Scratch Day is on in May. It appears that the first Scratch Day was on in 2009, and in May.
