How do other online communities notify you about things?
I agree that this would be a very useful system to use. Maybe on the settings page we can elect to get alerts (Envelope numbers) for each of the catagories:
Receive an alert for:
[X] Profile comments
[X] Project comments
[X] Studio comments
[_] Love its
[_] Favorites
[X] Someone quotes you in the message board
[_] Someone makes a reply to your message on the message board
[X] Your project is featured on the front page
etc.

Well, it's not a big problem for me because I almost never get love-its or favorites.
So I still want to recieve an message when I get love-its and favorites
EDIT: I agree with Boltbait's suggestion

I wish you could combine to a single line a “love it” and a “favorite” if they come within, say, a minute of each other.
Agreed.
Thanks for the ride, Scratch Team and community! Unfortunately, the time has come for me to move on from Scratch, so I'll no longer be using the forums. Thanks again, and farewell!

Also, expanding upon BoltBaits idea with the settings, we should also receive notifications when the people we are following create a project. I know that it's on the “What's Happening?”, but a notification would be nice.

isn't that six? jk, (2 = binary, 1 = don't, 3 = trinary, 2 + 1 + 3 = 6)

for a setting, because i wouldn't really like those, then i would get like… 0~3 extra notifications each day! also, it seems odd… in beta, i got like 4~10 notifications each day, now i only get 0~2 and 3 if i'm lucky, like on old scratch.

How do other online communities notify you about things?
I've noticed the Messages screen can get quite annoying in a lot of areas. Most notably, I am following the Scratch 2.0 Transition Team, so it is SPAMMING me with notifications. Well, it isn't quite “spamming” me, it is just making it filled with lots of grayed-out messages. This is definitely annoying. It also seems weird that it doesn't notify me of when projects are updated or released, that could be useful.
So here's some ideas:
In the “Account Settings,” it should have settings on what goes where in your messages. There would be two categories: Priority and Other. You could select what would go into the “Priority” category, so it would only deliver stuff you want to see. It also would notify you (number) on your messages icon when a new notification comes through the Priority category.
As well, I like the idea for a drop-down menu - it would make accessing your messages much easier (Thanks scratchisthebest!).
Let me know if these are good ideas.

Moving on from Scratch, to much bigger things. It's gonna be one fun adventure.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts and ideas about notifications. Since this has become a discussion about features, it's always good to bring up the Scratch design principles.
Remember - it's easy to imagine adding complex features and settings if you already know Scratch and the Scratch website well. But try to put yourself in the shoes of someone who has never used Scratch before. If it isn't likely to make sense to them, we're probably not going to do it.

Also:
So - if you hang out on other sites for kids, what do their notifications pages look like? How does it work? What is good / bad about they way they do it? Please post screenshots if you can - they'll be a huge help!

Why not remove the message for love-its and change them to likes! Sometimes I am stuck on whether I really do love the project or just enjoy it.

You should be able to choose what types of messages you receive. Also, on comment notifications, you should be able to click the notification and see it within the notifications page, along with a reply button. Then you don't have to keep switching between different pages to reply to all your new comments.

I think we should make the notification bar like Facebook's. I think we should have a option to control what notifications you get, a pop-up bar, and, like BoltBait said, combining like notifications.

i also know how you could do that, i have an idea! Yeah because i don't really do other websites with notifications, really other websites at all!
map tag, (to change pictures) and a div which sssslllliiiiddddeeessss out from the left.
you should also have a [long] and [short] tag, those would be good for sssssssssllllllllliiiiiiiiiiiiddddddddeeeeeeessssssss so it would become long.

Maybe mark a space between each visit to your messages, and between every mark it condenses comments, loves, and faves together, and you can expand them. That way it would be easier to keep track of things.
But it's only a small suggestion that might not work.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on notifications. We'll share some mocks of the new interface when we get to the testing phase.
