16:9 Aspect Ratio Support

Hi,

Having a 16:9 aspect ratio would help because it would give more screen space for users that have widescreen monitors. It would also help mobile phone users as when they go full-screen, it would take up the whole screen instead of pillarboxing occuring. @sheep_maker has managed to implement it into his 'Scratch 3.0 HTMLifier' which allows projects to be modified to have a 16:9 aspect ratio. He also even made a 16:9 Scratch 3.0 editor which allows you to edit code in 16:9 so I don't see why it isn't possible.

I see that the issue may be that not everyone has a 16:9 aspect ratio on their monitor (although, from my experience, it's quite hard to find that now) but you could implement some sort of scaling (like on YouTube) in order for it to be able to fit on someone's monitor. Let's say someone has a 1024 x 768 display; you could downscale that to 1024 x 576 when in full-screen mode in order for their experience not to be hindered. I'm sure web browsers can detect a screen's resolution so it should be no problem to detect this and act upon it. Maybe it is asking a bit too much, but you could upscale Scratch projects in order to improve quality of projects for fellow Scratchers.

I know this seems like a bit much but I'm not demanding for it to be implemented now, but possibly sometime in the future. Scratch 3.0 still has quite a few bugs that need fixing (most notably the pixellated SVG bug) which is why I wouldn't want to rush into it. However, the sooner the better.

Anyways, this is just a suggestion…

What do you think?

My specs:

16:9 Aspect Ratio Support

duplicate

Support if it's an option that's turned off by default. Otherwise, every existing project would be broken.

The project page would have to be modified a bit to compensate for it though. Right now the project player and the instructions/notes and credits are roughly the same size; if this were added, the disparity in size might look a bit off, although I'm sure it wouldn't be too hard to change the display in that case.

Thanks, I'll tell an admin to close it.
