Title ^^^^

It stands for the resolution of the image. If something is 2 x 2, that means it's 2 pixels by 2 pixels in size.
It's kind of strange to see a backdrop (which belongs to the stage) be 2 x 2, since the stage is always 480 x 360 though.

It's a bug. It used to be 0x0 on Scratch 2.

It's because the stage is in vector and transparent. It will show up as 2x2 pixels.

A thing to note is why is it 2x2 in size though and not 0x0 if the stage backdrop contains no objects in it?

It does that. It also shows 0x0 if you make a new blank sprite.

It does that. It also shows 0x0 if you make a new blank sprite.

That seems like an inconsistency though, since a backdrop with no objects (2x2) is larger than a sprite costume with no objects in it (0x0).

I'd say that it is a bug. If you add a single dot with the bitmap pencil at size 1, it will show as 1x1. However, if you look in the bottom right hand corner, it will show the entire backdrop as the colour that the dot is.
