Scratch has hidden fonts.

While I was working on a project, discussing new block ideas in it, I downloaded a .svg file from scratchblocks, and I was curious, was the text used in scratchblocks actual text or is it just using clever joint placement? Turns out, it was actual text. The font name was called, ‘ “Helvetica Neue”, Helvetica, sans-serif ’ Which leads me to believe this is the font name they gave the text used in scratchblocks. I might try more stuff, like comments and anything else scratch has, but I have other stuff I want to do.

If you want to know how to see this for your self, do the following steps:

1. Open up scratchblocks

2. Type in anything, just make sure it's text.

3. Download the .svg, not .png

4. Upload it on scratch.

5. Click on the text.

6. Click the text tool.

And then boom! There it is.

My theory is, the M.I.T team put in custom fonts for people to use in there graphics, but they had to include other fonts so could make things like blocks, comments, etc. And for scratchblocks to work, they had to use those fonts.

Maybe theres more secret fonts that never got used in Scratch 3.0, I don't know. Maybe you guys could figure it out.

Looking at the SVG file it has a line of CSS saying “font: 500 12pt Helevetica Neue, Helvetica, sans-serif;”
Those fonts are fairly common so they are probably already built into any computer, so its not a “hidden font” heck i would bet that you can just edit the font in the SVG file then upload it to scratch to use other fonts, just watch out as all systems might not have the font.

Thanks for the feedback! Although looking at this now, I remember something.

I remember trying to get the images from little alchemy 2 and putting them into scratch, (luckilly they were .svg) but they all appeared black, when they should just appear their normal color. The shape was fine, tho. It was like drawing a great image but then darkening it as dark as you can.

just google/bing/dickduckgo/whatever how to make svg files.
once you know how, add text using comic sans ms, then save it and export it to scratch

That means that any font that you have installed on your computer is a “hidden font” on Scratch.

technically they aren't hidden, the costume editor just doesn't provide those fonts on the dropdown for fonts

hi i am myself, i make projects that take like a week or month to make whenever i feel like it (which isn't often) and then they only get 10 views because i'm a nobody. and i cannot change that. i am just one singular person in the sea of many that are on scratch. my stuff don't matter. i don't matter. i am going to die in 70 years anyway, and 99.99% of people on the world will not even know, or really care if they know. also i am good at programming i made an opengl so ha take that nuuubs. I don't know if Helvetica is supported on scratch… Every single project using Helvetica as a font in Vector is replaced by Sans Serif

“sans serif” is not a font though - it's a category of fonts to describe fonts that don't have serifs in them:
without serif -> sans serif (sans is french for without)

“sans serif” is not a font though - it's a category of fonts to describe fonts that don't have serifs in them:
without serif -> sans serif (sans is french for without)

Any font on your system should be supported as CatsUnited and Myself have stated
