I am a HUGE anime and manga fan. I love shonen especially. One fandom that I recently got in to is Tokyo Ghoul. I've seen the first season, and I know a fair amount about the other seasons. I put myself into the fandom, and I'll just say I don't regret it. However, after doing a bit of research into it, I discovered that a lot of people really dislike Tokyo Ghoul.
They say that it's because that it follows a common anime plot of a weak character getting immensely powerful, only to drop their level of power dramatically or give away their title of responsibility at the end. Or even if they don't give up their power, they're still becoming more powerful to the point that they're OP at the end of the series. However, I don't think that's the case. Ichigo Kurosaki from Bleach is a perfect example. He starts out as a regular human, only to get his Shinigami powers and gradually get more and more powerful throughout the series only to give up his powers after the defeat of Aizen. Naruto, while he doesn't give up his powers at the end because he's the hokage, starts out as a child who's pretty weak, only to become one of the most powerful shinobi in existence. Izuku Midoriya starts out as a quirkless kid, only to get One For All and eventually become the number 1 pro hero. Point being, a lot of successful shonen anime follow the basic plot line of someone starting out as weak only to become the most powerful in their world as the series progresses. Tokyo Ghoul is no different. Don't get me wrong, I respect everyone's opinions and I understand if someone doesn't like it. I mean, all good parts aside, it is a pretty gruesome show. However, I do believe there are some better reasons for people not liking it, which can be reasons for liking it to other people.
To understand the primary reason I think that people dislike Tokyo Ghoul, you have to look at the hero vs. villain controversies in other successful anime. In My Hero Academia, while there are some villains that can be questionable in their villainous acts, such as Stain, they do specify pretty clearly who's the villain and who's the hero. It's pretty much what the whole premise of the show is based on. Yes, we all love Toga and Dabi, but it's still obvious that they're the bad guys. In Fullmetal Alchemist, while the Elric brothers have done questionable things in their pasts, we still know that the homonculus are the villains in the story. Death Note is a bit more questionable with it's villains and heroes. You could argue that Light is a hero, but someone else could say something different. In the end, crime rates had gone down, which meant that Kira had succeeded to an extent. However, most people can still agree that Light is, to at least some extent, the villain, and L is the one who wants to take down that evil. Point being that most animes have obvious villains and obvious heroes, you don't really need to think about it.
Tokyo Ghoul, on the other hand, is not like that. The immediate thought is to route for the ghouls, because Kaneki is one, Touka is one, all of our favorite characters other than Hide are ghouls. However, they do still kill people. When we learn more about the CCG, we learn that ghouls have devastated many people's lives. As Kaneki wisely stated, they are all to blame. The CCG is ruining countless ghoul's lives, ghouls are ruining countless humans' lives. You could make a solid argument either way. A lot of Tokyo Ghoul is political, not just action.
I don't think that a lot of people like having to think that much about who's the bad guy and who's the good guy. Most people want to have the main character as someone who is solidly a hero, no debate. Kaneki, on the other hand, is not. Most of Tokyo Ghoul is about him constantly changing, his acceptance of his ghoul side varying. At the beginning, he's innocent, someone who would never wish harm on anyone. As season 1 progresses, he starts to accept himself and other ghouls a little bit more. Then season 2 hits us like a brick wall. Kaneki becomes someone who most would see as evil, and while he isn't exactly aware of what he's doing, of what he was, he's still a villain in a way.
As the series continues, Kaneki is fit into countless different personalities, different ways of going about life. At the end, yes, he is a hero, but it's not always obvious. He goes both ways.
That's really the main reason I think that not as many people like Tokyo Ghoul as I think should. Tokyo Ghoul is more of an emotional journey, and while yes, it is an action anime, yes, it does have plenty of gruesome torture scenes, it's still primarily about Kaneki's progression of acceptance and his life as a ghoul.
I really love Tokyo Ghoul, I think the debate of whether ghouls are good or bad makes it much more intriguing than if it were more like Attack on Titan, with a lot of violence and not quite as much meaning (I still love Attack on Titan though.). Every fight has meaning. There is no violence without a purpose. The characters are amazing, the art style is beautiful, and it has one of my favorite openings of all time.
Tokyo Ghoul deserves more appreciation, and I hope the fandom continues to grow.

You could try writing it out first, and then if you're confident enough, you can look up some video tutorials on drawing.

There’s this one issue that has bugged me for a while about the title of this topic. The title implies that in this topic I could talk about anime/manga/any other related media and discussion. You may want to remove the last slash.

Inspired by a Post on Tumblr
because I like wasting my time writing really long posts about anime.
So, I recently went to Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp (it's really great, I definitely recommend going). It was really fun, I learned a lot, and I made a lot of friends who are otakus. I had a great experience there- except for one thing.
My fellow otakus and I were singing “somebody once told me it's your power Todoroki” and minding our own buisness. But then this girl decides to come in on us and call us weeaboos (in a rude way)! And then, whenever she would see me she'd call me a weeb (especially when I wore my My Hero Academia shirt). Eventually it got better, and she got nicer, but she was being pretty nasty towards me about it, and especially since I was just minding my own business, I didn't think it was her place to insult me.
I never really get teased/bullied at school about my love for anime. As a matter of fact, it was my friends from school who got me into anime in the first place. We have a lot of otakus in our school, and we all kind of stick together, so even if someone does have a problem with it, they don't really go over to a group of maybe 10 people at a time and offend them all. But I know that others get bullied for it, and I can now begin to understand how people feel when others call them weebs in a rude way. It really stings.
Like what you want to like! Watch what you want to watch!
Read a book for three hours, no one gives you a second glance. Read a manga for three hours, and everyone thinks your supposedly "one of them" If you ask me, love for anime is no different then love for any regular book, or love for any sports team.
You can love it, you can engage yourself in it, as long as you still have a healthy and stable life outside of it!
I'm an otaku, I love anime, I have anime merchandise, most of what I read is manga. But even with that, I still play five sports. I still get good grades. I still have a healthy social life. Just because you are an otaku does not mean that you are a weeaboo.
You can love anime and still be healthy.
I feel like people keep forgetting that.
Be honest, how is spending 5 hours a day watching interviews with sports stars or watching ESPN any better than watching 5 hours of Bleach or some other anime? Yes, you have to moderate it, but you can still love whatever you want to love.
Another thing people constantly mistake for in anime is what it actually is. People who have never seen anime often times think that anime is just censored things and pointless violence.
I'll admit, while I'm not proud of it, I used to be one of those people. Before I started watching anime, while I liked the art style, I didn't like anime. But I still had respect for the people who liked it. I didn't call them weebs or be mean to them just because they watched anime. In turn, they got me into anime, and I figured out that I love anime!
And any anime fan knows that anime is so much more than that.
Fairy Tail teaches you how to be loyal and shows you how much family means.
My Hero Academia teaches you to never give up on your dreams.
Tokyo Ghoul teaches you that just because things seem one way doesn't mean they actually are like that.
Attack on Titan teaches you to never take things for granted.
Fullmetal Alchemist teaches you that everything comes with a price.
Most animes have as much of a moral than any Aesop's fables.
So please stop judging us for what we love.
Stop thinking that we're failures, or a disappointment just because we enjoy watching anime.
Watch what you want to watch.
Read what you want to read.
Be you
Don't let anyone ever tell you different.
