As the show is dropping on Netflix in a week I felt like now would be a good time to make this topic. Discuss the classic giant robot anime that's actually about depression and mental instability!

Neon Genesis Evangelion

the show finally dropped on netflix and i'm beginning my re-watch of it now!

some notes from the first few episodes:
-while i was planning to watch it subbed anyway, i decided to have a look at the new dub and it's… not good. the line delivery feels unconvincing and forced. there's no real passion in the voice acting, seems like everyone was there just to get paid. i honestly prefer the 90s dub, cheesy and dated as it is, because it at least has charm to it and doesn't leave me bored to tears.
-fly me to the moon is no longer the ED, i assume because netflix was unwilling to pay the license. pretty disappointing but fairly understandable i guess? maybe they should have used the money they spent on the dub to keep it in there instead.
-most of the text just isn't translated? they just forgot? bruh
-during the second episode the subtitles just went out of sync halfway through. epic
i've also heard some of the lines have been changed because of the new translation, most of these aren't too significant but shinji's iconic line at the beginning of end of eva has been toned down, apparently to make it more accurate to the original japanese. i think it's less emotionally effective

hopefully those last two issues get fixed. pretty disappointing release unfortunately, but the show is still great and maybe even better than i remembered! i'll talk more about it as i go through the series. as several people who haven't seen it before are going to watch it now, i'll leave this topic spoiler free for the meantime. hope y'all enjoy it!

oh no netflix what are you doing
this is pretty clearly a botched release. the show should still be watched it's too inconvenient for you to see it another way, but i'd suggest finding another way to watch it if you can. i'm sure these changes aren't going to bother some people but for me they take away from a lot of the show's emotional power.

The theme song is lit. A Cruel Angel's Thesis is one of the best anime themes i've ever heard.

This new dub is tragic.

No Fly Me to the Moon is tragic.

No-homoing Shinji and Kaworu is tragic.

These mistimed subs are tragic.

Basically, Netflix is tragic. Everyone made fun of Funimation's CEO for saying his company would've handled it better, but he may have been right.

full agree. at least netflix saved us from the return of asuka vs. rei discourse by shifting the conversation to how much they messed it up.

the problem with this new translation is that it's TOO accurate. it follows the original japanese extremely closely but the translator failed to recognize that the word closest to the japanese isn't going to be the most emotionally resonant word in english. as a result the dialogue feels overly cold and clunky. the scenes will still hit hard but nowhere near as much as they should because of this translation. it's really disappointing that the most accessible release of the show is also a worse version of it.

for anyone who's finished eva and is looking for more things like it, i watched gunbuster today. it's the first project anno and gainax made and you see the beginning of things that are expanded on in eva. lots of giant robot action but set in space this time. it's more lighthearted and goofy though there's still hints of the psychological trauma that would later be explored in full. wasn't really a fan of the first 2 episodes but it gets better as it goes along, and it has one of the most beautiful endings i've ever seen. it's only 6 episodes and it's a good watch

on my re-watch my opinion really changed on episodes 25 + 26. after seeing some of anno's more experimental stuff i can more easily see what he was doing. it's a really great psychological ride and the bizarre style benefits it for the most part. i'd recommend watching end of eva straight after episode 24, then seeing these episodes as an epilogue
