Improvement To The Search Engine

So you've spent the last month making an awesome project. and you think it is one of the best. so you share it and…

the next day

well.. it is a start.

3 month later

i am sure that i am not the only one that have expirenced from situations like this, and it really drains the motevation out of you. i mean, there is nothing wrong with the project, but the problem is that it's at page 12378 and no one ever ventures down there.

and when you look at the first page, you always see the same projects. not the best projects, but the projects that just happened to be there–which isn't really fair to those people who put more effort into their projects nor to the people who are just starting.

so there needs to be a change.

the current search engine (as far as i know) ranks projects based on a rating system. thus projects with higher rating will always be show before the projects with a lower rating.

but what if it also took the last time the project was show into consideration?

so here my idea:

there would now be two (external) timers for each project, timer 1 goes up by 1 every time a search is made and resets if the project is shown. it records how long have the project gone without been shown. timer 2 will go up the project's rating (lets say 0.1-0.2) every time a search is made. the projects are ranked in the following way:
  • if projects timer 2 is both higher that n(lets say 5), the project whose timer 1 is higher will get shown first. when shown, these project's timer 2 will rest back to m(lets say 3)
if projects timer 2 is lower than n then the project whose timer 2 is higher will get shown first. when shown, these project's timer 2 will either go down by p (let's say 1) or reset to 0. depended on whichever outcome is higher.
(projects whose timer 2 is higher than 5 will prioritize over those whose timer 2 is lower than 5)

the above will mean the longer a project have gone without been shown, the chance of it been shown rises, thus projects with lower rating will get shown a lot more often, thus giving all projects and their creators a more or less fair chance.

P.S.:this suggestion is NOT a “recent option, it is more of the opposite of a ”recent" option

Of course, it's a great idea, it features new people and everything. But… I feel this is kinda complicated. While I was reading the timer thing, my brain turned off. I think it's easier to programming it rather than explaining it tough. I also think there should be another tab for this if this was added.

I also think adding a “recent” tab like there is in the Explore section would be good, but that'd be a duplicate, where when you start a search, that section is automatically selected.

the problem with making it a separate section is that people will perfer the old engine (as less bad projects will turn up) thus it is be pointless

Right, I didn't think about that. Well, I support the idea. People would have more chance to get seen.

Adding “Recent” search option was rejected.

I support. This would help more users get noticed without a “recent” option.
