Scratch VR | whenever it is coming to Scratch, or not.
Hey there. It’s @AlexStudiosinc. I’m here to discuss about an extension that I like to add. It is called Scratch VR. Scratch VR is a extension that you can make you own projects, For the first time, in VR! The headset that you can make is known as the Scratch P.C.G., which stands for Project Compatible Goggles. The Secret in the P.C.G has a Frame holder, which blocks the whiteness covering around the project screen, only showing the project. For instructions on how to build the Scratch P.C.G., click this link: https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/303725079 Here are the blocks that will go to the extension:
Blocks:
[set camera to
[change camera by
[turn VR mode to
Operators:
<VR trigger close to >
Sensors:
(VR Trigger)
(Goggles)
If your a user, and you like it, give it a like! If you are a member of the Scratch team, and you think it’s interesting, decide if you agree, and add the extension! This is @AlexStudiosinc, signing off.

No support, as the concept of VR inherently requires a 3d space, which is a rejected suggestion.
1.3 3D Scratch
Scratch is a language that is designed to be as easy as possible for beginners to learn. Adding 3D features would make the language more difficult for beginners to understand, and a 3D engine is not exactly the purpose of Scratch. There is a similar program to Scratch that contains block programming with 3D features, called Starlogo TNG. You can also try Alice; it is not exactly like Scratch, but has some similar features.

Unfortunately, 3D scratch will not be supported in Scratch VR. It will have its own VR sprites and VR background.

Scratch VR is a little different than 3D scratch. It has a cube map where you place your sprite in every side, and then it will be in 2d on normal, but with the VR, youll feel like in the sprite. Other options come with Scratch VR. Unfortunately, 3D scratch cannot be added to Scratch VR.

Aside from this involving a rejected suggestion, the other problem is how in the world the kids are going to get a VR system. Those things cost a thousand dollars, it's not like a VR project is going to reach a massive audience because it's VR. It actually will only reach a very very very very very small minority of people who even have a VR headset.

the vr could work for 2d games and also most people dont have a EV3 eathierOnce again, you seem to misunderstand how VR works. The concept itself inherently requires three dimensions to work, otherwise you would just have an image too close to your eyes to see properly.

What if it just made you see the project like normal, but games wouldn't work because of lack of controls. Or maybe have arrow key controller/joystick so games would be compatible.

No, it would be in 3D, whether you like it or not. I know you're suggesting that the images look flat (2D), but they are not actually 2D. Just because it's flat doesn't mean it's 2D, you can actually make 2D games using 3D engines.

I concede.
However, the next problem is that a Scratch VR project would be utterly ineffective on Scratch. Most people here are little kids, and many of them don't have the money or permission to buy or use a VR system.
Sure, maybe a few of us do, but a majority don't have VR. I don't think the ST would want to make a new feature just for 1 in every 100000 people who have a VR headset and use Scratch.
No support. Feel free to try to right your own extension for Scratch in ScratchX, though. I won't stop you, however it probably won't become official.

Interesting.
My vote remains on no support. Not only would this be inefficient and an expense of resources of the Scratch Team (creating the extension), end users (making the goggles), even game creators (using the extension properly), it partially involves a rejected suggestion (3D Scratch).
I know you have a nifty tutorial, and I appreciate it, but again, this would reach very few people. The parents of the little kids may not want to spend money to buy the materials for the ingenious augmented reality headset of yours for just a Scratch project. This is basically making VR projects “pay to use”, since you have to pay for the materials for an AR headset or a full VR system just to play those projects, and using real currency to do stuff on Scratch is rejected. I know this spending is not directly on Scratch but it still makes a Scratch AR or VR project pay to use.
Sorry, bud.

Basically took the words right out of my mouth. Also, the only way Scratch VR would even have a chance of reaching most users would be if it had Google Cardboard support, and that requires a smartphone anyway, not to mention the fact that there would be considerable latency.

Yes, but not everyone has a smartphone. I bet a lot of users can't really afford one, which would divide the community. I think that goes against the CGs.yeah. it will include a phone. and google cardboard would work good, but it will cause temporate whitness.-snip-

Also, what do you mean by ‘temporate whiteness’? Do you mean Temporary Blindness? If so, I don't really understand what you're talking about. Plus, there would be some latency issues.

temporary blindness.and for the smartphones, they can do it cross eyed on the computer screen. What do you mean by temporary blindness? Please elaborate. And what do you mean by cross-eyed on the computer screen? I assume you mean for 3d stereoscopic viewing, but how would that stream to a smartphone without latency issues?
