Learning to Drive... cO≤O"

I see… well the learners licence I get at 16 needs a supervisor, but in the state I live in I don't have any curfews or speed limits. I can't drink any alcohol though, can't even use handsfree phones, and can't carry non-immediate family members between the times of 11pm-7am.

Then at 17 or 1 year of Learners, (whichever comes last) I can take a test for P1 which lets be drive without supervision. Then after another year of P1 I can take a test for P2. Then after another year of P2 I can finally take my full licence test.

I might buy a car earlier than I planned to though, because I want to practice more manual transmission (stick shift), but the family car is an auto.
From what I hear stick shift is a pain in the butt.
Well, until you learn to drive a stick shift (and what I mean by “learn” is to be comfortable driving a stick shift in any condition) I don't think it's fair to voice an opinion of something you have never tried.

I learned to drive in a car with a manual transmission (or stick shift, if you prefer) and I don't think I will ever be owning a car without three pedals unless I am physically incapable of driving one.

In my experience, automatics promote laziness while driving. If you are a new driver, you may not see how this is possible, but if you have been driving for a while, you will see that certain elements of driving are much easier than when you first started, and you don't devote as much attention to the task as you once did. Where I live, many of the cars are equipped with automatics, and at least half of the drivers I see on a regular basis are derping around on their phones or putting on lipstick or messing with the infotainment system (if they have a new car). When you're on the highway, there is more chance of distraction regardless of transmission, but a vast majority of city drivers I see in automatic equipped cars are more dangerous than the ones I see driving cars with manual transmissions.

Also, many carjackers don't know how to drive a manual, which makes your car less liable to get stolen (this is especially helpful in older cars that don't have the advanced anti-theft systems that new cars do), and you will have a much more substantial reason as to why your friends cannot drive your car.

I don't feel like I'm actually in control of the car driving an automatic, it's really scary.

The way I explain it is as follows:
In a manual transmission there's a range of speeds for each gear. Say you're in first - no matter how far down the accelerator goes there's only a small range of speeds that are actually achievable. This gives much more control.

In an automatic if one presses the accelerator down enough the vehicle shifts to a higher gear after getting up to speed. It's horribly disconcerting.

When I'm approaching a junction I generally slow down a little and switch down from fourth gear to second. This limits the need to actual brake as the engine rapidly slows the vehicle down to that gear's speed range.

Oh gods, I just thought about trying to park in an automatic. Argh! Nightmare fuel!
In a manual transmission one can use clutch control to only supply a limited amount of power to the vehicle's drivetrain (rather than always being fully in a specific gear). This means that one can manoeuvre very precisely without having to use the brake or accelerator.

The notion of being legally allowed to drive and not knowing how to use a manual transmission hurts my brain.
