Hey! It's Choco, and just because I felt like it, I decided to set up a forum for our project

Colour Divide - Storymode Project

Discussion followed!! >: D

I can add more to this if needed as the forum goes on if we want? As to stay organized?

Here's a bullet list of (mostly) everything we've discussed about this project (along with a few plot holes I've pointed out we can fill):
  • Animated story set before modern Aurora
  • Possibly before the color ranks were a thing
  • Tells about the FC (Ferrum Council) and AC (Air con- Auroran Council) before Ferrum was founded and the wall was fortified
  • Wall was a magical barrier?
  • Possible political event capturing/killing all magic-users // the witch trials but with magicians-
  • ^ Caused the Ancients to seek out a safe-haven to hide (Aurora)
  • PC (Player Character)'s side depends on the decisions they make.
  • Coding may be a bit difficult
  • Possibly a neutral-gender character or a character where you can't really tell
  • clone cameo
  • after prophecy arose, FC went out to build Ferrum, AC stayed, and worried a revolution would start/fc would return, fortified wall and possibly made the color ranks over time – monsters to consider-> when did they come into the picture?
  • Auroran Council might not be corrupted? Maybe the Royal Family still has power back then
  • FC = Old Colorless
  • PC Goals? Ideas: prevent the Auroran council from building/reinforcing the wall as the aggression between Ferrum and Aurora might grow – support the rebellion (FC?) – support Aurora
  • Question to consider: When did Aurorans forget about Ferrum if there used to be conflict? Did the magicians that eventually came to power cover it up or something else?

I think the colour ranks would have existed, but the discrimination (if that's the right word?) between ranks wouldn't have settled in yet, it kinda feels like something that came with the new government after the old Council left.
I remember reading something somewhere that the monsters used to be/are guardians of Aurora or something like that? It never specified exactly what they were guarding Aurora from, though, could it be the old Council?

  • - I guess if Aurora was going to try and pillage Ferrum, they wouldn't want the public knowing, or at least remembering the fact that the FC used to
be their leaders. I think we've discussed the scientists making a memory-altering potion or something for a purpose like that, but I'll have to check some of the old chains.

    - Maybe there wasn't even a direct conflict between the two sides (as a result of the PC's delegations, which would make them a hero?). If a significant element of the game involves manipulating the actions of the councils to avoid disaster, I guess it would make sense for the overarching tale to be of how the PC managed to, against all odds, keep the peace or stop a spicy monster boi from ransacking thneedville-meets-hogwarts.

*edit* help i'm a discussion noob who can't get rid of that rogue bullet point

Okay, so:
  • I think the colour ranks would be a thing, but like Maya said, maybe there wouldn't have been discrimination yet.
  • We could see a little prologue/animated scene at the very beginning where we see the founders of Aurora building the safe haven, maybe with some narration
  • Will we need voice actors for this? Probably…
  • Maybe the FC didn't want to follow what the prophecy said, so they decided to distance themselves from it. The Ancients/AC were strong believers in fate and such, so they strongly disagreed with this and wanted the FC to stay to fulfill whatever role they may hold in the prophecy. This could be the large conflict that the PC plays a role in solving, maybe even keeping the two sides off of the brink of war.
  • Ooh, maybe a little something outside of the council drama - there are two lovers separated on the sides, and the PC could be a messenger that's close to both of them and delivering letters between the two people. However, they know what they're doing is illegal, since contact between the sides isn't allowed, and so if they decide to deliver love letters between them, they could be caught - though they could also decide not to do it, and we could make some repercussions for that choice as well.
  • We absolutely need a clone cameo. How would that work?
  • If we have the whole “love-letter” storyline, it could be after the PC helped stop the whole prophecy conflict and the wall was fortified, so maybe later on in the series. There would still be tension between the sides, though.
  • How would this whole thing end? It would have to be something that would fit with the canon storyline in the original RP, even if there are multiple endings you could reach.

Also, maybe it would be a good idea to have Destiny's post at the beginning as the main list of ideas and concepts, which we could update as we plan the storyline.

  • Yeah I agree. Thing is: would the test have been implemented back then? I feel like before the technology, measuring people's colours would have been more ‘casual’. Maybe the Ancients had some kind of ritual to determine colour strength that died out in Aurora after the AC rebelled.
  • Has anyone ever played/heard of the game King's Quest? I've always found its flashback style of gameplay interesting - the whole game is actually narrated by the elderly protagonist to his grandchildren, but the story features his younger self and reveals how he became King (I'd actually really recommend it!). Maybe as the main events of our story were so far in the past, the exposition would be read aloud from a secret diary, or told by a wise old woman who would later be revealed as a survivor of one of the big events?
  • If the lines are read aloud then yes, but keep in mind that the pool of voice actors on scratch isn't that big and it'll be difficult to find suitable adult voices..
  • Yeppers if the prophecy was what caused the split between Aurora and Ferrum it will definitely play an important part in things.
  • Forbidden love? Yes!! It will spice up the story, besides, having people close to the PC on both sides will keep the stakes high. The player wouldn't want to have to choose between them in a life-or-death situation, would they? >: )
  • 100% We have to get that clone cameo!!! Maybe we could stash some meme graffiti around the place?
  • If we want to really focus on that potential relationship, then yes the two characters in question would have to survive the initial conflict. wAiT LeTs Go aLL LuPiN aNd ToNkS aNd GiVe ThEm A bAbY iN a LaTeR cHaPtEr tHeN hAvE tHeM dIE hErOiCaLLy!!
  • So the wall will end up fortified, and the AC will become the dictators - that's what we need to stick to canonically.
I was thinking that since they have never been mentioned before in the lore (they never existed), the legacy of the PC actually ended up fading out of memory despite their heroic actions, because they never really ‘belonged’ to the AC or FC.

If the twist is that the story is just one big flashback, whoever discovering it could use the PC's information to fight against/for the prophecy in the present (depending on whichever side the PC has inspired them to prefer) in the events of animated series.

    OH YES
What if there are secret rooms that you must solve puzzles to get into? And in each one, there are some of the clones, as well as a ton of other mysterious weirdness?

Oh gosh I've just checked the RPG studio…

But anyway, is it too soon to start thinking about PC names? Maybe we could all suggest a few after briefing the character and then vote from the final list. Or if anybody's up for a challenge we could use a randomiser for the name and then try building off that?

Maybe we could code it so the player chooses the name? Also, this whole 3.0 format is really confusing to me so would we have to use the 2.0 app? Then, whose account are we posting this on? Maybe the PC's name could be a word in a foreign language like latin or something?

also I've been doodling ideas of what the PC would look like, and I had an idea; what if the PC had a sort of “imperfection”? When I say imperfection I mean something to do with appearance that might cause a difficulty for the PC. It also promotes the idea that you shouldn't judge someone based on their appearance. I thought things like vitiligo would be good idea. Vitiligo is a rare skin disease that causes the loss of skin color in blotches according to Google. Or even just a disability like a paralyzed body part. It could create an obstacle that the PC has to try and solve to make the story more interesting and hopefully relatable to the smaller percentage of the audience that doesn't get addressed as much as it should. I also think their race/heritage should be what people where I live call a “mutt” I guess. Their skin tone is darker but not too dark so it's more of a brownish color? Maybe their eye color could be a weird hazel. These are just ideas that I'm throwing out there.
Here are some more “imperfection” ideas:
    • Heterochromia iridium
    • Poliosis (this can be caused by vitiligo or stress)
    • maybe mute/deafness/blind?? My cousin is deaf and the way she lives isn't too drastic from ours so I think it'd be neat. I know a lot of deaf people now that I think about it..

^just ideas? also what would be the PC's magic?

  • I know that the Tester isn't that old hhh,,, but the Test could've existed? Maybe it was more of an honorary ceremony that the whole city attended and each 12 y/o went up and the host had a small speech about their potential or future, gave them their color, and sent them to their jobs. It must've been a much smaller community back then since there weren't so many generations so a ceremony like that would've worked. If you've ever read the Unwanteds, the dull city of Quill has something like that called the Purge where they kept a record if you ever made an “infraction” to sort you into either Wanted, Necessary, or Unwanted. The High Priest had the list of them prepared before the Purge took place, so maybe a special AC member studied the coming-of-age 12y/o to decide their color.
  • That's a cool idea! I'm okay if we decide to go for it
  • Adult VAs are VERY hard to find on Scratch. It makes finding male actors look easy. It'd be hard. Maybe it could be like Animal Crossing or Undertale where there's just sounds for voices with the dialogue going across lol
  • ~ don't have any thoughts on this one rip
  • Maybe the PC could BE one of the forbidden lovers? So the PC's forbidden lover would be on one side while maybe something like their family is on the other? There's a video game called Fable III where, at the end, you get three choices; To return the lives of hundreds of killed innocents, return your dead sister and dog back to life, or receive millions of gold coins. The decision is very hard for me as the player. sorry im rambling now
  • Secret rooms/puzzles for a cameo seems like a lot, but graffiti in places would be a nice touch xD
  • spOILER ALERT >:O
  • yeah maybe we should focus on the main quest before considering side quests. We still have to discuss our coding abilities and how the new 3.0 format may limit us me

Also sorry for not replying sooner I've been at my cabin for the past 4 days whoops

    • Sorry I've completely lost track of the quote system! ;-;

Yeah I find 3.0 difficult to work with too.. Actually, we'd have to figure out how we could code this in a group - we could do a kind of remix chain with new features, but that would make it super difficult to keep hidden. If we all have access to the official CD account then we could *maybe* create it there, but idk how we could use the 2.0 app in conjunction.
    • A latin name would be cool, especially since Aurora and Ferrum are both latin. I think it would be a lot easier, both code and plot-wise if the PC's name wasn't a variable.
    • An ‘imperfection’ would be an interesting character design, however if it is a disability I really think we should consult somebody who experiences it IRL throughout the creation to make sure we're not mis-representing people with said condition, or accidentally presenting the trait as "quirky' or ‘cool’.
    • That being said, I'm open to giving the PC some kind of unusual design point - especially if it can further the story. I can directly message you some sketches (plz don't hurt me scratch) on our art accounts.
    • Kinda unrelated, but I noticed you wrote there: “I think their race/heritage *should* be..”. Aside from as a means to represent said race/heritage, what was your reasoning as to why the character should/should not be of a particular race? (I'm in a law competition at school yEEt)
    • People where you live call people of that heritage a wHAT?
    • If we go down the ‘Animal Crossing’ voice route (and save a ton of time and assets) we could use the new 3.0 audio modification to make younger VA sounds more like adult ones?
    • I was thinking that the PC's magic could be, amongst other things, tied to wisdom/perseption/social interaction? Perhaps the fact that game scenes go into a kind of ‘slo-mo’ to allow the player to make decisions, and the constant guidance/influence of the player on the PC is actually a manifestation of the PC's magic, as no other characters possess it? In short: the player IS the PC's magic?

Ok so if the above point is how the PC can pull off all their delegation with the councils, then maybe their name could be inspired by a mythological ‘messenger’ figure, like Hermes, Iris, Angelia, or Mercury? With a bit of research, these Gods/Goddesses actually have quite a lot in common with what the PC represents:

Hermes: (Greek) God of trade, heraldry/messages, merchants, commerce, roads, thieves, trickery, travellers..

^just ideas? also what would be the PC's magic?"

    • Sorry I've completely lost track of the quote system! ;-;

Iris: (Greek) Goddess of the rainbow, heraldry/messages, colour, truth, oaths…
Angelia: (Greek (daughter of Hermes)) Lesser deity of messages, tidings, proclamations…
Mercury: (Roman (Counterpart to Hermes)): God of eloquence, messages, communication, travellers, luck, thieves, commerce…

Replying to both Mystic and Destiny in this, so it's rather mixed up.
  • Why does it need to be hidden? We're not exactly famous, only a few people would be able to find it. And if they want spoilers, then it's THEIR experience of the game that would be harmed, and not anything else. Unless someone famous leaks it, but why would they do that?
  • I don't think adding the ability for the player to choose their character's name would complicate things too much, but having a name chosen for them would prevent people from naming their character silly things like “Lord Fopdoodle Klazomaniac”. Naming the character after a god of messages seems a bit too obvious, though? Why would their parents name them that? Does Greek/Roman mythology even exist in the world Aurora is set in? The name also stands out a lot, unless god-names are common in this story. Perhaps a name that seems more “normal”, but if you look up the meaning, it's relevant to their role in the story? I found Alexis/Alexius, which originates “from the Greek name Αλεξις (Alexis), which meant ”helper“ or ”defender".
  • Some sort of disadvantage would make things more challenging, but does it have to be a physical disability, or can it be a social stigma disadvantage? Vitiligo would be kinda hard to animate. Some examples of social stigmas from my GURPS rule book are having a criminal record, being disowned, excommunicated, uneducated, a monster, or valuable property. Maybe being a slave or a criminal? What if the PC has an visible slave/criminal brand (or maybe a collar…) on their neck or something? Slavery would be more restrictive, as you'd have to work, and carry out the missions necessary to advance the story whenever you got a break! What if there was a time limit? If you were a criminal, you might not be allowed into certain places unless you had a high reputation (ooh, there could be a reputation stat that increases and decreases according to your actions…) or some sort of permission slip.
  • Aurora is a small and isolated place, wouldn't the different races eventually blend together? The climate would also affect how people look. Heck, their JOBS would affect their skin colour, as different jobs would affect their sun exposure! Where and when in the world IS Aurora?
  • I suggest that you use “mixed-race”, because you risk offending people if you use any other word.
  • There's actually more to older voices than just pitch, lowering it doesn't actually do much. It would be easier and would take less time and space to do something more like the “voice grunting” in Undertale instead of voice acting.
  • THAT IS THE BEST SUPER POWER EVER THAT WOULD BE SO USEFUL IN REALITY

    • That's a good point. Although CD isn't that active anymore there will still be people who will recognise it from the fame of the series Bubble animated, but there's no way of telling how people would react to a new ‘branch’. I guess we could just create a remix chain and move to the group account if any ‘problems’ arise?
    • Having a pre-chosen name would allow us a little more flexibility in the script, though, as we wouldn't have to worry about grammatical correctness in assets, and sPiCy PuNs would always make sense. They wouldn't have to be named directly after a preconceived deity, especially one with a unusual and recognisable name such as Mercury or Hermes, but it might be cool to thread in some extra meaning. Some more ‘normal’ names include: Alistair, Alexander (All names derived from that, such as the Alexis you suggested work too), Angelo, Malakai, Boden, Irene, Phoebe, Miriam and Maia, but by no means do we have to use them. I'm currently doing some concept sketches of a potential PC - maybe once we agree on a design it will be easier to name them.
    • Oh gosh I didn't even think of the animation factor with a physical disability! I think the implications of the PC being a slave would be really interesting, but they'd need to start off with enough social respect to be able to influence the councils, and I doubt they'd take a criminal/slave seriously. Maybe as things progress, and the PC makes more enemies and is pushed to make more difficult decisions they get captured or convicted as a slave and need to work to the time limits/ stigmas you suggested until they can escape? I like the idea of a reputation stat, it would make the experience more challenging if certain characters refuse the PC services when they have a lower reputation, and maybe negotiation could be more effective with a high rep.
    • If the events of the game are set far in the past (like the time of the prophecy + Ancients) when magical people were first gathering, then maybe races would have still been pretty distinguishable..
    • *gets flashback to huge debate on how space and time affect Aurora's geography*
    • IKR?!

Okay that quote is getting way too long.
    So:

    - We shouldn't use a group account, because Scratch doesn't like those. A remix chain would be fine. The truth is, if we're trying to get more attention to the studio, that would work best if we shared this project on bubble's account but since she's not really involved in this, I don't know…
    - I'm honestly okay with Scratch 3? I mean I get super confused because they switched the colours of the events and control blocks but that's pretty much it.
    - A slavery/criminal record thing might be too intense. I mean, it's a difficult topic, it would be hard to incorporate into the storyline, and well, it wouldn't be great if the project got marked NFE. As for a disability though, I think it could be interesting if the PC had a prosthetic arm/hand. It would make things more difficult for them without too much complications in the animation. Maybe they could've been injured in the witch trials (if we're going with that plot) whilst trying to get to Aurora, the safe haven?
    - For some reason, I've always loved the name Iris. I think that being able to type in your own name might make things a bit too complicated, because then we'd need more variables and maybe even a text engine… eh. I also love the name Iris for this character because of how the name goes with rainbows hehe (and truths bc aurora's full of lies tbh)
    - I don't really think the race would matter for this character? People in Aurora are pretty diverse in their backgrounds, they just all connect because they're all magicians.
    - Well, it would be nice to implement other powers than just slowing things down, so they could be used in the game. But maybe the PC could be Colourless and just an ally of the magicians, which helped allow them to stay neutral between the sides?
    - I like that Lupin and Tonks idea actually
    - Maybe we could just cut out voice acting altogether? It would be tricky to do and would take much more time. Also, if there are just captions where the text shows up, we wouldn't even have to do proper lipsync! And really, lipsync is a pain to animate. It takes ages.

    - I think too many people would assume that Bubble made it if they posted it on their account - many people still think Bubble was the sole writer of the animated series. Besides, I don't think it would be fair to make them deal with notifications/questions directed to us when they're trying to work on their own unrelated projects.
    - Maybe we could ask Bubble for a shoutout, though?
    - Are you referring to idea of the PC being some kind of slave/criminal originally, or the option of that being a punishment for making certain decisions The latter option means that we can control how much intensity/disadvantage the player has by using a possible rep-meter. I think (given that the previous lore deals with some difficult stuff and criminals aren't uncommon in Aurora) we could incorporate something like that into the plot if we're tactful, but of course it's a group decision.
    - How technologically/magically developed is Aurora at this point? Idk if they'd be able to create a prosthetic arm without it either being so powerful that it performs regularly or so rudimental that it almost becomes an inconvenience. (I once had a teacher who wore a prosthetic lower arm for cosmetic reasons (the joints/fingers weren't articulated) so they just relied on their strong arm for complicated tasks and only really needed the other for holding certain things and/or gesturing). Maybe if the PC does need some kind of prosthetic at any point they'd have the choice of either making the dangerous journey to Ferrum to get a fully functional one from the most talented OC magicians or staying in Aurora and getting a basic one?
    (tbc?)
